I know a lot of people, you know, you hear about the Bulls team and why they’re losing because of their players entering free agency … You know, I want to say something to some of the young players out there in this game today. Especially somebody like Luol Deng who turned down that big contract. You don’t turn down $12 million. Period. That’s me, personally. I learned when I did my deal: Don’t look at other people’s money when you do your deal. Unfortunately, that’s what this league is about. They see a player that they think they’re better than, and they try to jump over them.
So now, Luol, you’re over here in a contract year and you’re not doing so well as a team. You get paid as a team. Now you’re going to be a free agent, and if you keep this up, that $12 million might not be on the table. So he turned down $12 million, Okafor said he wants Dwight Howard’s money … I mean, you ain’t Dwight Howard. It’s like them two had a discussion together about turning down the $12 million. Then Iguodala turned down $12 million … What is going on in the NBA? Iggy, you’re from Arizona, baby. You don’t turn down that much money. I don’t know who your agent is, but Agent Zero says you don’t turn down that $12 million.
I just don’t understand it. Then Varejao, he has for $60 million and ends up with three years for $17 million. You could have got that contract last summer! You done missed 20 games of the season getting paid the same money you could have got last summer. For the deal you just signed, you could have got that this summer from the Cleveland Cavaliers without losing no basketball time. By the time you’re playing again and are ready back in your form, I’m going to be playing again! It’s a damn shame.

The only shame is that these people get paid millions of dollars to play sports while people who really bust their ass get peanuts. Quit crying over lost millions Arenas.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

you know, some people bitch about how nba players get way too much money, (which they do) and when one steps up and says "just take your dough and be happy" we gotta slam 'em. i read that article twice just in case i missed something, and still did'nt see where arenas is "crying over lost millions".

he said Luol Deng & Okafor turned down $12 mil... are we talking $12 mil annually, or $12 mil divided over 3 or 4 years? if it's the latter, only a fool would think they won't get more than that on the open market.

I liked what he said, I think he's on point. But I hope he understands he better not ask for more than 12M per when HIS contract is up, or it will have been all finger pointing with no backbone.

thanks... looks like i'm completely outta the loop... i gotta agree w/Gilbert then, but players probably shouldn't be commenting on other players & the contracts they sign... i thought Tiki shoulda kept his mouth shut when Strahan was holding out for more money a couple years ago too & Favre shoulda kept his mouth shut when Driver was looking for more dollars (i think it was Driver)... that's just not something that players should be concerned about... worry about your own damn contracts

He's absolutely right, and if it's true that Varejo turned down that much money, than Gilbert is even more right. I also agree he needs to keep his mouth shut, about this. However, maybe he really is trying to send a message or something. He seems to have a good grip on life and doesn't seem nearly as spoiled as most of these other athletes. Maybe he's saying the wrong thing, publicly, but the NBA still needs Arenas.

Players are playing - agents are making and rejecting deals. Most of players are in early 20s. What they know abut life and business? The agents are mofos and thay playing their game of getting money for nothing. More money that players by the way. How many players was screwed by agents who are just hungry for max money? Yes - player can fire the agent but why another one will be better? Mofos are mofos.

Why is Arenas, a man who is opting out in an attempt to make more money, talking about others rejecting what they perceive to be low ball extensions? Is he for real?
Why do people find this guy entertaining? I find him to be a complete fool. Why do people like his game? He's a glorified Jamal Crawford who gets to the line. His team stunk until he got hurt.
Seriously, how on earth did this guy turn into an "NBA Superstar" and a celebrity? Why does he have fans? It's baffling....

I don't think reading comprehension is very good these days.

And the only way this bites gilbert in the butt is if he gets his deal and he turns it down because he thinks he should be getting Kobe or Wade money. He's not Kobe or Wade, Deng and Iggy(who are at the same level of talent and got similar deals) are not Melo and Lebron, and Okafur isn't Howard. b
