I offered up a post on why we need another guard. I dont care whether we win or lose here[well i hope we win] but to get to another level of play--we need another guard who can play some two way basketball with the ability to hit a three. I mentioned Delonte West because I think he\'s a good fit and could be had [unless someone has a realistic next option]. I dont think a 3 guard squad of Nate Rob and JC is good enough and it\'s unfair because we could be better--we could be real good. If ANYONE actually gets hurt in that area--I would expect a serious losing streak--one that happened when JC got hurt last year. They have to address this--they have an ending contract and a pick and Seattle is 0-5 going nowhere. I think this is a reasonable evaluation and a logical move that can be done. I think with Delonte we could close down some of the perimeter driving that is just killing us. Our guards let guys into the lane at will--it seems like any 18 year old G with speed could take Marbury to the hoop successfully right now. He has lost some lateral speed.

Also--as I said Zach is aweome NEAR the hoop but his shooting % suffers when he falls in love with that 16 footer.

I would say "yes" to Delonte. But I don't see Zeke going for him. He'd say Mardy can fill that role when healthy.

I would have to agree with him on that one. Collins has the potential of being a very good defensive guard, if given the minutes.
I'll never trust this' team again.

1 defensive guard in Mardy is not going change whether we're a good or bad defensive team (Which we suck.) We need to get ALL of our players to play defense. Even Ron Artest isn't gonna make this a good defensive team. A good defensive team consists of 5 players playing good team and man to man defense. Not 2 or 3, attempting to create a spark. Until we completely change this squad, we're going to be a bad defensive team, b/c Curry AND Randolph don't play D, Nate plays hard but struggles, Jamal sucks at it, Lee plays hard but isn't great, Quentin is damaged goods. We're gonna continue being mediocre to average until we change the entire roster.

The team doesn't play defense.

And we turn the ball over too much.

We need to stop doing both.
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

Yeah and let me mentally change back to 19 years old. Reality is the guard play is NOT going to be good enough for the team as a whole to meet its potential. 10-31 tonight with 15 TO\'s by the guards--they didnt get the bigs easy shots and could not guard. They are going to shoot better but the TO\'s and defense isnt really going to change.

I think you have to wait until Mardy and Jeffries ( yes I said it) are healthy before you make a move for another guard. Orlando sets incredible picks. Balkman looked like he was in a wrestling match every time he tried to fight over a screen. They are good and Van Gundy is a good coach. I am sure he studied alot of tape and his game plan was a part of their success.

Coaching is not important. Any GM or retired player can do this.
Give me bunch of young and athletic gunners and all this LB, Pop, VanGandy, Sloans, Ralies boring guys can go and play golf with Barkly...

Kind of sounds like the arguments we all been having in in the off season.

Arkrud, Regarding coaching and game planning. If you remember when the Jeff Van Gundy took over for Don Nelson the Knicks were playing one of the best teams in the league in JVG's first game. They were not supposed to win. They won big and I remember seeing an interview with Riley afterward where he congratulated Jeff on the job and said that he had called him and told him not to stay up all night watching film. Don't underestimate what preparation and coaching bring to a game. I think Stan Van Gundy had his team ready to play the Knicks and exploit their weaknesses.

delonte is a good player, who can shoot, drive and plays smart, he also defends, I would jump on that in a second...

Funny but wasnt Fred kept on the roster for exactly that purpose?!? Or did I confuse his "value" to the team with other things he does?!?

You're still viewing this team like it just needs a little re-tooling. (One more guard, for example.) This is the worst constructed team you could possibly buy for $90 million/year. If the goal is to win a championship, you have to start all over.

Bonn - if you "start all over" you better prepare for a decade of hibernation.

c'mon, get real. "Starting all over" is not an option in New York. Never will be.

It was barely an option in Atlanta and they have sucked for longer than that.

Curry and Randolph are not terrible man-to-man defenders (at least Randolph is not terrible). They obviously are not going to block shots though. So to balance them out, you need people at the 1,2, and 3 positions who can keep their man in front of them. I like the idea of a Delonte West. He would be a solid PG that could stop all this penetration. Our problam is that IT has combined so-so post defenders without shot-blocking abilities with so-so perimeter defenders who lack lateral quickness. The combination is what you get last night. We need to either add shot-blockers or get better perimeter defenders. I don't think we need to scrap the whole team, but we do need to make 2-3 changes.
Trust the Process

No matter what Isiah tells you, smart rebuilding does not take a decade. Foolish re-tooling, however, is an indefinite battle.
