The Yankees were told by agent Scott Boras that they could not meet with Alex Rodriguez unless they presented an extension offer that guaranteed the star $350 million "as a floor."

Boras' remarks, first reported Friday by ESPN.com, were made Oct. 25 during a conversation between the agent and general manager Brian Cashman, a baseball official said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because those details were not made public.

Rodriguez had $81 million remaining over the final three years of his record $252 million, 10-year contract, and the deal contained an additional $10 million escalator. The Yankees were prepared to offer him an extension worth $25 million to $30 million a season for four or five years.

Boras then notified the Yankees on Sunday that the star third baseman was opting out of the contract to become a free agent.
I thought this was hilarious (except it's true!)

I really don't understand it. What the heck is A-Rod trying to do with all of this money?

It was reported earlier before the season ended the Cubs interest in A-ROD are extremely high and that a presumed offer from them would be a $300mil contract plus partial ownership of the team(deferred money?). Which equates to probably around $350mil. I think he shot high with the Yanks because he was fed up with being here and wanted to be Prickish with negotiations.

that rumor was shot down immediately by the Cubs ownership... 1 of those typical "unnamed team sources" pretty much made up to sell a news story.

i said it on the "Yankees Talk" thread in the OT forum... ARod & his agent badly miscalculated the Yankees' unwillingness to negotiate if he opted out... the Yankees were prepared to offer a 5 yr extension for $150 mil... combined w/his already existing $91 mil left on his deal, that equates to $30 mil per over the next 8 years, but he got greedy & thinks some team out there is going to give him $35 mil over the next 10... good luck w/that one... Boras said he wouldn't negotiate w/any team unless the offer for his client Carlos Beltran started at 10 years $200 mil a couple years ago & sure enough he didn't even get close to that from the Mets... the same thing's going to happen to ARod, & he badly tarnished his client's already damaged image by having him opt out... stupid move on the part of both ARod & Boras... he could have built a legacy in NY playing for the Yankees... now he's going to turn into the next Barry Bonds... an alltime great player that's always been about himself & no one else.

Boras is trying to make the Yankees come crawling. No other team is going to offer this kind of money. Boras & a-rod are fools. Hank & Cashmen need to make them craw back. The Yankee brass should bid just above any other offer in the league. Boras & a-rod blew it! If he goes somewhere else, what exactly would we be losing? Nothing really.
I'll never trust this' team again.

He should be called Mr. April.

Not in his defense- but he wasn't the only yankee to have bad games in the last three years.

Agents Hoping Owners Collude Against A-Rod
4th November, 2007 - 12:57 pm

New York Times - The words and deeds of Scott Boras over the past week had other agents saying they wouldn’t mind if the owners engaged in collusion against Alex Rodriguez, which is a pretty severe reaction from people whose clients were victims of the owners’ collusion in the mid-1980s.

By opting out of the last three years and $91 million of his 10-year, $252 million contract, Rodriguez, as Boras has pointed out, was exercising the right granted him in the contract that Boras negotiated with the Texas Rangers in December 2000, and the one the Yankees acquired four years ago. He really didn't have that bad a series this year. For most players, the numbers he had would be pretty good.

I find that part of the story interesting. If true, maybe the Yankees weren't dead set against keeping him. $100 to $150 mil over 4 to 5 years is more than reasonable.

If this dude wants more than the obscene $25 mil a year he was getting, I would tell him to go f** himself. Who does he think is actually going to pay him $35 mil per year. There are maybe only 4 or 5 teams in the entire league that could do it and he just insulted two of them by a) opting out and b) doing it during the world series. I hope he ends up signing for less than what he was making.

Great post, and when the yankees broke their own policy of not negotiating during the season, A-rod sort of spit in their face. Boras to me is bad for sports, honestly and A-rod is a fool. No team is going to ante up now that the yanks are not driving up the price.. If I am the yanks, A-rod would have to come crawling back, and take 30 mil less to make up for that subsidy from the Rangers he cost us.. and then I would sign him and immediately trade his sorry ass...

the Yankees won't be signing Arod after the stunt he pulled no matter how much less he'd be willing to accept IMO... they gave him every opportunity to open up a trade dialogue & like you said, he & his agent pretty much spit in the face of Yankee brass & their fans alike by not even allowing the Yankees to present him w/an offer while all along misguiding them by saying he was not planning on playing anywhere else but for the NY Yankees throughout the entire season prior... i don't see Hank wanting to have anything to do w/ARod anymore... ARod & Boras made their bed, now they're going to have to lie in it... the Yankees will continue on winning championships just like they've done throughout their 100 year history w/o ARod on their roster.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the whle Hank Aaron thing. The dude is the only person in the entire league that does not have enough respect for HAnk Aaron to show up and pickup the award. He had a prior engagement? During the freaking world series you have a prior engagement when you are supposed be getting your own team into the world series. What a load of crap.

This is an opportunity for the Major league teams to get his price reduced. Thats the way I see it. Everyone should turn him down and make offers to him of what he made before he went out on the market 25 million no higher. I know this would be colusion but say 22 million and thats it. He was over paid before now its the owners opportunity to knock him down some.

The prior engagement was him & his agent plotting any way possible to upstage the World Series w/their opt out announcement in game 4.

QUOTE OF THE CENTURY

hilarious how Boras suddenly decides to put a sock in it the moment the rumors about the possible collusion of the owners against his client start to surface, ain't it?

like i said, this stunt will end up costing him & his client big money when it's all said & done... what a moronic move on their part.
