The vultures are way past circling The Garden. They are receiving directions from the control tower for their final approaches.

With the apparent reportage over Isiah's sour disposition and the invitation of Vivian Stringer into the dogpile, it would seem the clock is ticking louder than ever. Dolan is hearing footsteps in the dark. Is Daddy Sir Charles coming down the hall?

The "unmitigated disaster" Jeffries, another Isiah mistake, goes down for 2-3 weeks, if not longer. The Knicks will certainly start the season under .500 as Curry and Zach bump heads in Cleveland and knock the other unconscious. Now. with that said, the Head Coach position, as well as assistants will need to be filled in mid-stream. There are tickets to be sold and image to repair. Dolan needs an ambassador, a healer, a tactician and a winner. So the question remains:

who got next?

I think its Herb Williams on an interim basis. He's demonstrated a degree of loyalty unheard of in the NBA.

He also didn't do poorly.

And he's got a great image and great relationships with most of the NBA, unlike Isiah 'burn the bridges' Thomas.

Herb is the obvios choice, but who takes over as president of operations? Grundwald? Definitely not comfortable with that. Hopefully Dolan is sending out feelers for the next Pres.

Memo to Dolan: Please dont call Magic for a recommendation.

I think Dolan will think "out of the box".

Isiah Thomas' replacement will be.... Isiah Thomas.

basketballjones - you made a funny but you also touched on the core question.

The issue is not who "we" would like, but the next man Dolan thinks is best able to send a series of convincing messages to the Knicks "shareholders" and players.

Shareholders, in this sense, are those buying the tickets, merchandise and cable subscriptions - and ultimately filling the Madison Square Garden seats in April and, in turn, the Cablevision checkbook leading into 2009.

I'd just like to remind Martin and Andrew of their enormous generosity, in allowing me the honor and privilege of starting the Official Isiah is Fired thread, when the time comes. And it finally looks like it's coming sooner rather than later. misterearl and I finally agree on something.

As for who to replace him, I think Grunwald will be the interim caretaker until at a minimum the trade deadline (there's not much flexibility out there for moving our players anyway) and likely through the end of the season. Then a suitable replacement can be found. Same goes for Herb as the interim coach.

Hopefully then there will be a purge of most of Isiah's players and a logical rebuild will take place.

Now only if we could find a way to get rid of Charles Dolan's spoiled brat of a son.
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

Are there any big name coaches out there that can repair the franchise ?

I think we need another player/coach type of guy. Someone like a doc rivers or a terry porter. Some one young enough to still relate to this bunch. I like Herb, but I don't think he has what it takes to be a head coach on this team. His personality seems to timid.

If Isiah does get canned, the first order of business for the new GM should be to find a taker for Curry & Crawford in a package deal for shorter contracts.

He would put himself in a solid position salary cap wise.

I agree that it would be fun to watch Rick Carlisle get fired after half a season.

I don't know what became of him, but if Derek Harper were assisting under someone like Riley I'd love to give him a look.

Bring back larry, he can be the new billy martin to Dolan as the real billy was to Steinbrenner.

Grunwald is not a bad choice and he actually did not do as bad in Toronto as was originally thought. He set the table for Colangelos "miricle" much like Layden set the table for Isiahs financial rampage and the league tampon to obsorbe the bloated malcontents of the NBA.

First when picking I:

Don't starphuch!!!!! One need not have a retread. Get a young guy who has the intellegence to devise a plan and STICK TO IT! We will question him at first. If he is a little geeky guy, he will get lots of flack for doing what is needed. Then he gets to choose his coach. Not Dolan, but the GM.

I hope its someone we don't know or ever heard of. Maybe some Euro superstar who tells our divas to phuch off in languages they don't know. Get some Russian hardass to beat this team into submission. A russian "larry" type player. Dolan should set aside 50 mil to buy out who needs to go and do the rebuild right!!!!!

I do't want to hears "fratello" this, or "Logo" that, or how Magic Johnson can bring this team around. No starphuching is gonna be tangable enough to turn it around.

Build the team with winners from good solid programs. Men of character who want to play.

Wouldn't mind bringing in Greg Anthony for an interview for the GM position.

That is an awful idea.
I want to leave something that's going to stand for a long timeI want to leave a legacy,I want to leave tradition.I want to leave an imprint,a blueprint in terms of how people play, and how they coach and how they respond when they put on the Knick uni.
