October 10, 2007 -- Over the final two days in South Carolina, Isiah Thomas acted like a dead man walking. He wasn't just subdued in his meetings with beat writers, he was downright comatose.

The weight of the world had come down on his shoulders over the past week. After Monday's impressive, preseason-opening victory over the Sixers at the University of South Carolina, Thomas acted joyless. He also seemed completely worn out.

Nobody probably enjoyed yesterday's day off more than the Knicks' coach/president.

One week ago, Thomas rushed from federal court in Manhattan to a helicopter, to a plane, to Charleston, S.C., never catching his breath. The Knicks returned to New York from their extended training camp early yesterday morning.

"We had a good camp," Thomas said softly before boarding the team flight. "All the guys are looking forward to going back home."

Tomorrow night in their preseason home opener against Israeli powerhouse Maccabi Tel Aviv, Thomas could be the subject of boos and taunts as he stands by the Knicks bench for the first time since his and James Dolan's massive setback in federal court on sexual-harassment charges.

As Thomas spoke late Monday night, a Page Six gossip item, citing a Garden source, had just appeared, claiming Cablevision boss Charles Dolan would make major changes within management, possibly removing his son James from power. It was one more headache Thomas had to deal with.

For the immediate future, Thomas' job is safe, according to multiple sources.

Charles and James Dolan released a statement, saying, "The management and leadership of the company is and will continue to be firmly in place."

The Dolans must stand behind Thomas now, if for no other reason than they are still united in court for the next couple of months, appealing the shocking $11.6 million guilty verdict.

Once the appeal is over, if the Knicks start out slow and if the public-relations damage appears irreversible, Thomas could well be out.

The Charleston camp was bizarre from the beginning, with Thomas missing the first practice. James Dolan did not make the annual trip to hang out with Thomas and the coaches, choosing to remain low key, not wanting to draw attention to himself. But Thomas and Dolan remained in contact over the phone.

On day five of camp, Thomas was still dealing with the fallout, with he and his wife phoning the Rev. Al Sharpton, who was calling for a Knick boycott. The next morning Eddy Curry could not practice. The organization feared its franchise player may have a season-ending shoulder tear, though he did not.

Even the newspaper-clip packets distributed to players omitted articles related to the trial to keep them focused on basketball. On one morning, the clip packet contained one page.

Today, Thomas holds his first practice at the team's Westchester headquarters, trying to return to normalcy. That is, unless Allan Houston finally shows up.

Knicks orthopedist Allen Answorth confirmed original diagnoses Curry has a torn labrum, doesn't need surgery, will be reevaluated in one week and should be back in two weeks.

The Post has learned a major reason rookie Demetris Nichols' draft stock fell from a first-round bubble pick to a late second-rounder (53) was a false medical test he took at Orlando's pre-draft camp in which he tested positive for hepatitis C.

After the Knicks traded for his rights, the test came back clean. However, Nichols' chances of making the club over Fred Jones are slim.

The Knicks consider Jones a much better defender and he has a guaranteed pact.

There's also belief Thomas wants to keep Jones, whom he drafted in Indiana, for support in the locker room.

if we release nichols, he'll be signed faster than you can say fire isiah.

fred has one year left on his deal- and probably wouldn't end up on an nba roster again.

such a move would be undefendable. we need the 15th guy to be someone with a shot of becoming something, not a has been veteren.

here is one thing I don't understand: If he failed the test but knew he didn't have Hep C or knew that there was a possibility that it may be false, why not take it again to verify?

His agent REALLY let him down.

Good question. You could ask the same of Eddy Curry from a few years back. I certainly don't understand the reasoning behind it, other than that logic would dictate that if he didn't have it, he'd take the test again to prove it.

are you referring to the heart test with Curry? I am pretty sure he took the test about 100 times to verify.

There's always mass hysteria regarding injuries w/ regards to the draft. A lot of that b/c stuff is passed on as rumor. Also once a team hears they guy is hurt or has a sickness or something they'll just automatically pass on him rather than allocate their limitied time and resources to do due diligence on him- especially when there are so many other players to scout.

Guys fall in all 3 major sports based on non-career threatening injuries. Locally, Mathias Kiwanuka and Justin Tuck from the Giants are great examples. And Joba Chamberlain from the Yanks is another great example.

No, I was talking about the DNA test that Curry refused to take that would've cleared all doubts for Paxson.

I gotta think that if you want a big $ contract, you take the test in secret to see what the results would be OR it could be one of those tests that can be interpreted a million different want so nothing authoritatively positive can come out of it for the Curry camp.

That DNA test is a sore issue. That can mark your family in the future with insurance or in applying for jobs that you are more at risk to be sick due to your families health history.

franco12 - the panic over keeping Nichols is nearly as vocal as the hysteria to stop stunting David Lee's career by nailing him to the pine.

Bottom line, Isiah must have seen something he liked about Nichols to draft him. It's on Nichols to prove he belongs.

in a few weeks, though? what we're hearing now is that he may not even get a shot with this team after training camp. young guys should get at least some regular season looks to see if they belong, huh?

it's especially disappointing if we drop him in favor of guys who have gotten chance after chance - fred jones, jerome james. in itself it's not a huge deal, it's just one more instance of poor management.

"Kelvin Cato pick up the orange courtesy phone..."

Martin - forget the angst over Jerome James. In this man's NBA you need at least 3 centers on the roster, if not 4.

James may be have the world record for knee tendinitis but he's still needed as insurance. If he can't perform up to Isiah's standard he'll be gone faster than you can say Travis Knight.

see, you need that third center in case one gets injured. problem is, that injured one is always jerome james.

VDesai - so what would you propose as a startegy to compliment to backup rookie center Randolph Morris?

The Knicks would be 1000 times better off running a small lineup than even considering Jerome James a viable replacement to an injured starting or backup center. If Jerome James is playing big minutes for you -- you are in trouble. Even when he was at his best in Seattle, he was splitting time with Danny Fortson and another center.

Jerome has zero value to this team. He doesn't have the stamina to play significant minutes. He fouls so much that he'd barely stay on the court even if he had good conditioning.

In today's NBA there are many teams who don't even have a true center -- they run big forwards in the center spot. If we keep James it's because Isiah can't admit his mistakes -- so much so that he'd be willing to make a mistake that has potential to be even huger.

Why can't we just sent D-Nic to the D-League?
