No one seemed more eager to get the season started than Curry. In late July, Curry and his wife were robbed at gunpoint in their suburban Chicago mansion.

“The scariest thing I’ve ever been through in my life,” Curry said, speaking about the incident for the first time. “Guns in your face, guns in your chest, guns in your back. People screaming at you, cussing at you, ordering you around, cursing at your wife, guns on her. It’s crazy.”

The incident prompted Curry and his family to return to New York almost immediately, which Curry said was beneficial to his game. He ended up spending more time at the Knicks’ training center, and losing the most weight since he turned pro in 2001.

Curry declined to list his weight but said that his performance in strength and quickness tests, when compared with this time last year, “were just night and day.”

At the time that players spoke, there was no news from the courthouse. The team delayed its flight to Charleston in the hope that Thomas might make it. Players shrugged off the potential impact of Thomas’s missing a practice or two. But the stain of the trial is not likely to soon fade.

“This,” Curry said of the new season, “is our escape.”

Analysis from The Answer Man:

Forget the weight and forget the analysis of body fat. Curry has changed his hairstyle and, fortunately, has added another year to his life.

He also admitted that playing next to Zach would be a welcome challenge. The most intriguing story of training camp, and the pre season, will be the three-way bond that forms between Curry, Jamal and Zach.

Good find Earl. Good to see that Curry is in good shape (I'll take him at his word as opposed to a picture from some unfocused lens from the sidelines).

I predict Curry will have a very good year. As he said, the court is his escape and he has a lot of pinned-up angst/and anxiety stemming from what happened to him and his family during the off season. I'm really pulling for this guy.

sad that he needed to have a gun pointed in his face to change.

bigbeast - I'm more curious about the amount of anger that Eddy is still feeling since the home invasion. I know that the moments after my car has been broken into I want to hit somebody. Now, if I multiply that emotion and extend it to my family - now throw in some gunplay inside my home - I just might remember that 'bad taste' feeling for a while.

somebody who gets in my way might hafta pay.

Did he have a gun pointed to his face before last season as well because last year's Curry completely trumped the season he had his first season in the orange and blue.

Sad?

franco - you ever had a gun pointed at you?

Not a prop, plastic replica, bb gun or starters pistol. A loaded gun.

As one who has, let me share something intimate. It WILL change you forever. Ain't nothing sad about it.

he has shown growth from his rookie year out of high school to last season as a knick. this is one wicked experience. these type of things can effect people in many ways so hopefully he bounces back a better person.

I wonder if the perpetrators were put up to it by Zeke to scare him into working out over the summer. He's a scary mofo, that Zeke.

Eddy seems like a good guy and good family man. I don't dislike him personally. He probably *likes* basketball but doesn't love it enough to do the brutal work to get in absolute top shape.

Panos - the real question is why that smarmy Zeke sent the same cats after Antione Walker and his family.

Bonn - how can anyone make a call on liking, or not liking, someone personally who they have never met or spent significant time with?

Then again, there are some tasty morsels from the Philipines advertised online this week...

IM sure we can find some comic relief in jest for his motivations but at least he is turning into somthing positive and using the engergy. I hope his wife can do the same.

I think our eddy grew up a bit this summer and im sure had some reality knocked into him.

Eddy had a great season (for him!) last season and all we can wish for is his incremental increases in his game. MOre d and reb's and he is a top 5 center even if his pts drop a bit.

Im sure the team got him someone to talk to and work this thru.

Nalod - excellent point on the residual effects on Eddy and his wife. The Knicks support staff he would be wise to initiate ongoing counseling as a part of the next few months and check in periodically during the season.

I'm not one to infer too much meaning in the superficial, but.... if the photograph of Curry sampled on the NYKnicks site from Media Day is any indication, a few NBA centers may feel some pushing in the opposite direction when trying to move #34 off the low block.

I don't expect Eddy Curry to turn the other cheek

He could have died. Berman said one guy had a gun in Currys back when they both fell down the steps. That gun easily could have went off.

I actually agree with this here. Curry is looking angry and determined. Granted they may be staged "give me attitude" photos but still, he has a good mean face.

It sucks that this is what it may have took to motivate him and it sucks even more that we are drawing parallels on how this can affect him positively in a basketball game, it is what it is. I hope he can take something positive out of this. If it is to start acting like Ben Wallace and to also start backing it up, than so be it.

joec32033 - I'm not so certain Eddy's ordeal will affect him positively, especially early in the season as refs and players are getting re-acquainted.

The way Knicks games are called will be another sub-plot worth watching.

Eddy, like Shaq, is a very large man who can be difficult to call due to call due to the perceived force he exerts on other players and vice versa. We have seen how Shaq became more demonstrative, to the point of his profanity-laced tired on air.

Eddy's personality is a work in progress

“This,” Curry said of the new season, “is our escape.”

Pretty much sums it all up.
I'll never trust this' team again.

You're right. The truth is I don't know Eddy personally and don't know that I would like him. In general, I'm way too generous toward Eddy.
