A pall already cast on season

Some quick observations from Media Day that did not include Isiah Thomas, who was in federal court STILL awaiting a verdict, already casting a pall on the 2007-2008 season. The Knicks were set to take their flight to Charleston early tonight - the chances of Isiah being on hand to run the first practice tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. very bleak.


Eddy Curry went into detail about the harrowing night he got robbed at gunpoint and tied up in his Chicago home. One of the craziest revelations came when one of the burglars had a gun to his back, and they walked down the staircase. The burglar tripped and they both fell down the stairs. The gun did not go off. Curry also said he is "so curious'' to see how he and Zach mesh on the blocks.

Jamal Crawford hit the weight room during the summer for maybe the first time in his career. The bulked-up Crawford is up to 204 pounds - from last season's 187. Crawford said he wanted to be stronger toget through screens and become more durable. He said he's planning on being the starting shooting guard.

Malik Rose expects to be here all season. During exit interviews last April, Rose said Isiah cherishes his off-the-court leadership. Malik said, "I hope to add something on the court too.''

Zach Randolph did not look in great shape at all. And he and Eddy Curry have yet to be on the court together because Randolph didn't arrive in New York until last Wednesday for his physical.

Stephon Marbury was his usual offbeat self, talking about finding Jesus on June 29th. Allan Houston will fit right in.

For the most part, the players blamed the tabloid media for blowing the Isiah trial out of proportion. Which is why, knowing the landscape, James Dolan should never have let this go to trial. Now the owner who claims to do everything possible to have the Knicks win on the basketball court head into their first week of practice without their head coach and president.

This can only happen to the Knicks.

At the risk of piling on, the most intriguing player at Media Day was the one and only Stephon Marbury.

He was actually more open that I anticipated, so give him a little credit.

The questions weren’t very specific because there’s no point in making somebody feel ridiculously uncomfortable. I just played back the audio, hoping to gain a better understanding of the various points the veteran playmaker was attempting to make in eight minutes of conversation.

Maybe none of us will ever completely understand where this is going.

I got this much from the visit, Marbury is working hard to separate the player from the person. And in case you can’t read in between the lines, he spelled it all out when somebody asked Marbury to describe the highlight of his summer.

“What was the highlight of my summer?” he said. “When I gave myself to Jesus Christ.”

Marbury even noted the sudden transformation occurred June 29.

And what inspired the change of heart?

“What happened to me was I got to see myself outside of myself,” he said. “I was able to look in the mirror and really see myself.”

Don’t ask what he saw.

“I mean, that’s personal,” Marbury said. “I’m not going to ask you what your wife wears when she’s getting dressed or what your son (does) inside (his) bedroom getting ready for school. That’s my personal business. I don’t feel like anybody should be able to ask a question like that. I think that’s disrespectful to ask me a question like that. I don’t think you should get out of line by asking me a question like that. That’s personal.”

What’s the point of all of this?

Marbury is not going to change. Regardless of what people think about the situation, this is apparently who he is now. Marbury contends none of it matters in between the lines.

“Basketball in my life, it has nothing to do with what’s going on with me as a person,” he said. “The way how I play basketball is how I will play basketball. Me as a person, that’s who I am as a person.”

Marbury did again say he was thinking about relocating to Italy when his contract expires in two seasons. And he doesn’t seem to mind that such a move puts a limited window on a chance to win a ring.

“I’m not caught up in winning no ring,” Marbury said. “I want to win a championship just as a basketball player, for something that I do. Basketball is not my life. Like, if I win a championship, great. If I don’t, life is going to continue to go on. Basketball is only a short portion of your life. After basketball you’ve got to live the next 50, 60 years.”

I believe all yo gys have missed the boat on this marbury stuff. I pointed it out before but I'm not sure if you understood what I was saying.

Marbury is saved. He said it above in the interview. He gave his life to jesus. No disrespect to peoples beliefs but people that usually go though this change develop insane tendancies. Like really crazy behavior. They say stuff that could make anyone turn there head and be like , ooooooookkkkkkkkay and then try their best to get away.

Marbs wasn't smart to begin with so now in his unstable state he will speak out with more insane babble. He is just extreamly happy and free. Its a beautiful thing. God bless him.

Craw was really chompin those snickerdoodles. Lets just hope craw still has his quickness. Gaining 20llbs in 4 months? Its very possible but I'm praying it doesn't effect his game or give him knee trouble.

I agree, Marbury is becomeing my favorite knick. It might be good if he did color during broadcasts when his playing days are over. Kinda of a "Zany Twist" to his story.
