Brown awash in job offers, agent says

INQUIRER STAFF REPORT

Larry Brown, the former 76ers head coach and current executive vice president of basketball operations, didn't land an NBA head coaching position this off-season, but there was no shortage of coaching opportunities, according to his agent, Joe Glass.
Glass wouldn't confirm or deny the story in SI.com stating that Brown almost accepted a position to become an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics. It reported that Brown turned the job down after talking to Sixers chairman Ed Snider, who persuaded him to remain with the team.

Snider was unavailable for comment yesterday, and Glass wouldn't discuss specifics involving the Celtics. The agent said Brown also was not available for comment.

"I can't comment on this story you are talking about from Sports Illustrated," Glass said last night. "We have had so many offers over the course of the summer, I can't keep track."

Glass said it wouldn't be appropriate to comment on any prospective job offers.

"Right now, Larry is working hard, scouting, evaluating talent, and helping the 76ers," Glass said.

Brown was quoted in the story as saying he would like to get back into coaching, but added that he doesn't want to do it at the expense of current Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks, who is in the final year of his contract.

A Celtics official last night confirmed the team's interest in having Brown join Doc Rivers' staff.

"The story is true," the official said. "Doc was hoping he [Brown] might consider joining his staff. There was interest on both sides, but nothing came to serious talk or negotiations, as has been told to me by our management."

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

Be hard for larry to be an assistant to Doc Rivers.

Larry at the helm of that team could be what they need.

I'd like to see Larry return and prove himself one more time.

Where ever he coaches, I hope he's able to bring along Steve Francis with him.

I hope we can trade for the unprotected 1st round pick of whatever team Larry goes to!

there's gotta be something in the rulebook - if you can't hold your peepee, you can't coach in the nba.

I'd love for more than anything else for Brown to coach again and prove that it wasn't him that messed the season up. I apologize to the few for being negative again, but it was suckbury's fault (I stand by that) and Dol head and Isiah for letting it happen. The 28 million he got must be sweet to have and not to have to earn. I know, sorry, broken record. Just had to get that one in.

Larry Brown thought that David Lee was a 3 and that Q's best position was 2.

Don't get me wrong. Larry's a hard ass, no doubt. But when you are the coach and you have a mouthy, self proclaimed star that is a run to the press player who ****s up team chemistry, you have to side with the coach for sure here. That's what the problem was and everyone knows it. This is why I would like Larry to get another chance to prove who the real problem was.
I'll never trust this' team again.

And this is the main reason I don't like Isiah Thomas anymore as our GM or coach. People think about this. As it turns out, just about everything Isiah has done since he's been here, it has all been negative. Isiah is Dolan's mistake, but this team is Isiah's to answer to. Oh' and that's right' he can't right now, because he's in court.
I'll never trust this' team again.

I'm guessing they want him to be an assistant coach, although the agents comment (so many offers I can't keep track of them) sounds pretty suspect to me.

There have been nine head coaching vacancies sinc eBrown's departure and he has had exactly one interview for a head coaching postition.

Whatever positive/negative opinion you have concerning Brown's tenure here, seems to me that the league has spoken.

Larry Wanted to Get Rid of the Following to Build a Team

Rose-gone
Taylor-gone
James-should be gone
Marbury-lost his mind
Francis-gone
Robinson-should be traded

He may have done a terrible job, but you need to get rid of distractions to build a team

MS - Larry Brown - gone

His tactics of tearing down everything and everyone to build later just didn't work in New York

In the same vein, few NBA franchises are showing interest in enduring his "scorched earth" routine

Otherwise he would already be a head coach as rembee pointed out

You are assuming that he would go on every interview he is asked to go to. There is the possibility that he had no interest in the roster or the location of the team. Furthermore, you are assuming that of the 9 vacancies, all those teams could afford a coach with the price tag of Larry Brown. I'm not a LB apologist -- but I'm not sure we can say "the league has spoken" and Brown is no longer considered a top coach.

Cookdcokehop - for the same reason former GM Scott Layden is charting deflections in Utah from a seat DEEP on the pine

The game just may have simply passed Larry (with hall of fame plaque in hand), and his schtick, by.
