(If there is any constant at MSG it is performing in the eye of the storm. Looking ahead, with the opening of training camp around the corner the younger Knicks will need to learn how to deal and the vets will need to adopt a more stoic personality. Then again, Dave Hanners did a decent job with the Summer League team. Whatever happens, 2007-08 promises to be a roller coaster of memorable dimensions. Stay tuned...)

At Thomas Trial, Knicks Are Focus of Questions

By RICHARD SANDOMIR
Published: September 11, 2007 NYT

Isiah Thomas spent four hours yesterday at his sexual-harassment trial across a square table from his accuser, Anucha Browne Sanders, listening as a pool of potential jurors was winnowed to 14, which is to be cut today to a panel of six and two alternates.

Opening statements are to follow the selection of the jury.

Thomas, the Knicks’ coach and president of basketball operations, and Browne Sanders said nothing to each other in the jurors’ room on the 23rd floor of the Manhattan federal court, where Judge Gerard E. Lynch of the United States District Court questioned the jurors to determine their fairness to serve. The antagonists seemed to avoid eye contact despite their proximity. But barring a settlement, they will be in the same courtroom until around Sept. 27, battling over Browne Sanders’s charges that Thomas cursed at her regularly and made unwanted sexual advances toward her.

Thomas, 46, in a gray suit, looked relaxed, smiling occasionally, and at breaks in the questioning of the jurors, laughed with his three lawyers, all of them women.

He showed none of the seething anger that he displayed at a news conference in January 2006 after Browne Sanders, then a senior vice president of marketing for the Knicks, accused him in federal court of sexually harassing and verbally abusing her.

...

Robert Becker, a 28-year-old engineer from the Bronx, was rejected for his belief that a disproportionate number of basketball players get into trouble similar to Thomas’s.

He added that he was no longer a Knicks fan, prompting Thomas to rest his head on the table. “I kind of gave up on the Knicks when they signed Latrell Sprewell.” Becker said.

Lynch noted that Sprewell’s arrival pre-dated Thomas’s hiring by the Garden.

Few of the potential jurors said they had any deep knowledge about Thomas, or the case, and only a few indicated that they would have difficulty if Lynch asked them to avoid reading or watching sports-related news to avoid accounts of the case.

One juror who made the group of 14, Irene Ray, a 58-year-old part-time receptionist, said she recognized Stephon Marbury, the Knicks’ guard, who was said to have made vile comments about Browne Sanders, as the player “with the $15 sneakers.”

Marbury is expected to be a witness during the trial.

Kathleen Bogas, one of Thomas’s lawyers, questioned the objectivity of Tommy Vazquez, a 37-year-old maintenance worker and Knicks fan from the Bronx, who told Lynch that Thomas was a better talent evaluator than he was a general manager.

“He has an opinion about the team on trial in this case,” she said.

In overruling her objection, Lynch said it would be a disservice to disqualify someone who follows the Knicks closely. “The team isn’t doing that well,” he said, a circumstance that he said places the coach and general manager “on the line.”

Browne Sanders and Thomas said nothing after the session. But Sue Ellen Eisenberg, another Thomas lawyer, said in a statement: “Anucha Browne Sanders did not work for Isiah Thomas. She did not report to him. Isiah did not hire her, he did not fire her, he never said he was in love with her and he never ever sexually harassed Ms. Browne Sanders.”

Sounds like Isiah doesn't want Knicks fans on his jury.

What does that say about the job that he's done with the Knicks?

Even Isiah knows he's done a horrible job.

I hope you're joking guys, cuz this is all dictated by the Legal Counsel. I'll remind everyone that there are 2 sides to every story and we don't know what the truth really is. Even with trials you don't always get the whole truth. I just hope that this doesn't adversely effect the team this season. I think Dolan should've settled and let this thing die. Going to trial is always messy and both sides are gonna get blasted by the facts that come out in this case.

This is Dolan's way of getting back at Isiah for all the money he blew on JJ 1+2 AND OTHERS , by not buying anucka out with a settlement and by letting them air their dirty laundry in the press.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

playa - Anucha refused the MSG buy out and is going for the big money.

What reason would Dolan sabotage his profitable Fall cable season in the eyes of his subscribers, when a buy out can be drawn from the petty cash cigar box?

c'mon

Then again, airing the "dirty laundry" is will drive ratings because it holds the interest of thousands of people who salivate at that kinda stuff. Having the Knicks in the news on a daily basis in Septemeber, while football and baseball are in prime time, isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Somewhere, someone will slip up and actually talk about basketball.

Its been reported Anucha refused the $300K buyout or something along those lines and asked for more. MSG refused. IMO, $300K was not a serious offer.

Andrew - $300K may not be a serious offer in Anucha's eyes. I would offer that amount is probably around 2 years base salary. Now, I'm no attorney, nor do I play one on tee vee, buut if MSG felt strongly that her claim was jive, they could simply line up the legal team and head to The People's Court. Let the best suit win.

What do they have to lose?

Thank about it. What could be better than some free press coverage in September when Knicks basketball is annually forced off the sports radar by the Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets?

You can't buy with 6 million dollars the kind of exposure the team is getting. Love them or not, they will draw interest.

Maybe next summer we can have the little yellow school bus as Starburys "special" tour to promote sanity (buy demonstrating he does not have it) and disputing that Starburys make you delusional.

MSG is a trip.

Nalod - you hit the nail on the head.

(while you conveniently overlook the fact, on this historic day, that Marbury had enough class to pledge a few million dollars to police, firefighters and school teachers)

What's the absolute worst thing that can happen?

Nalod - if Anucha wins some bonus money it only makes Dolan think twice about hiring the next female executive at MSG.

You want the Knicks to act professional throughout the organization? They can start by prohibiting players from illegal off-season workouts in Greenburgh which violate the CBA, fire the hot dog guy in section 418, and organize a sting operation against the scalpers on Seventh Avenue.

If Isiah and MSG "lose" in legal court and wins on the basketball court people could care less.

Or are you making plans to join a NOW picket line at 2 Penn Plaza for Knicks home games?

Right, because everyone knows that Knick fans are the best at forming rational and accurate pre-formed opinions of people, and we know the case will be presented in an unbiased and balanced manner in the New York Sports pages.

Man, too bad the Knicks didn't make the playoffs last year or Isiah would be getting off scot-free.

rembee - you want balanced legal coverage on the sports pages?

hold up...

"Knicks coach Isiah Thomas strode into Manhattan Federal Court yesterday flashing his magnetic grin and occasionally letting loose one of his trademark laughs.

It was the sort of self-confident air the two-time NBA champ used to disarm defenders before blowing by them with a killer crossover.

His opponent, Anucha Browne-Sanders - at 6-feet-1, the same height as the ex-point guard - wore a beige suit jacket, black slacks, large pearl earrings and a stoic game face.

The fired Knicks exec studiously scribbled notes on a white legal pad, occasionally glancing across the table at Thomas, nattily dressed in a blue-gray suit...."

you don't want someone with an opinion of isiah as GM- either way, that will bias their decision.

Face it- if you put six people like isles up there in the juror box, doesn't matter if isiah is innocent or not, chances are they vote guilty and gloat about how they forced isiah out of NYC-

If Isiah looses, I don't see how Dolan can keep him around- not with his family values BS & previous stance on sprewell.

franco - don't overlook that Dolan also chose the "second-chance" storyline with Vin Baker.

With the acquisition of the problemmatic Zach Randolph MSG may be less about the "family values" of the Layden era than it is about a "do-over" for a select few.

Dolan's public relations firm has to counter with the best work environment stories they can research and as much distance will be inserted between Isiah and Anucha in the chain of command.

If Isiah is found innocent - life go on. Roll out the ball racks.

If Isiah is found guilty, his legal penalty will be in the hands of the judge. Next, the local public reaction is measured and predicted for the long-term. David Stern gets involved if there is any collateral damage to the image of the league.

Dave Hanners and Herb Williams get in a fist fight over a missing coaches whistle. Mark Aguirre is seen having dinner with Barry Bonds.

If Isiah is suspended, or fired, Mark Aguirre takes the reins.

Yeah, if there is one thing Dolan has been known to love it is uncensored press about the Knicks. "There's no such thing as bad press;" that has long been his attitude.

This from the guy who, out of nowhere, brings up Rick Ankiel in a Marbury thread.

mythfaze - with Roger Federer just having stomped through The US Open, A -Rod making people forget why they booed him, Pedro and David Wright headed to the playoffs, and Chad and Eli on health watch - Dolan is quietly thankful for the free September pub.

There is nothing worse than being irrelevant
