Knicks keep Nichols

After failing to persuade him to head to Europe for a year, the Knicks yesterday offered rookie guard Demetris Nichols a one-year non-guaranteed minimum contract ($427,000) to retain his rights yesterday. Nichols is expected to sign and be at training camp Oct. 1. -Marc Berman

so i'm assuming this was the best way to handle it, right? he'd have to sit out a year to become a free agent? could he go play overeas for a year on his own and then come back and sign with any team as a FA?

Yes but he doesn't want to go to Europe. And if he did, thats very likely kissing his NBA career goodbye. Why not play in NYC and get as much exposure as possible?
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

if he doesn't want to go to europe then that seals the deal. but otherwise i'd think it would be to his advantage. he's not likely to get that much exposure as a 3rd string player for the knicks. but he could get some burn for a euro team as a big outside shooter. then nba scouts would be more revved about his "potential" and he'd quite possibly have a choice then about which team offers most $ and pt.

exposure sitting next to Big Game is not good, although the $400K for doing it is worth it.

Its a non-guaruntee contract meaning they can cut him at anytime. This move was probably to pacify him and his agent until Isiah figures out what his next move will be.

Isiah is a good man to the players he gets until they cross him. I think isiah figured he pay him first and if he had to he could cut or trade him. Obviously he doesn't wanna do that but thinking he was down with playing in Europe was a mistake. Isiah did the right thing. 400k is some good dough. He'll still get a nice pro rated version if he is cut. Its all good.

Anyway, I think the next flurry is coming. Isiah doesn't do **** for no reason.

I hope everything works out in the end and we can keep him. i'd like to see what he can really do in the NBA. My guess is that he could be at least as good as a guy like Kapono. I mean we know he's more of an athlete and has some defensive skills. Why shouldn't he be able to stick in the league?

I kind of don\'t get it. We *trade* a 2008 2nd round pick to get Nichols--he proved in college and against his peers to have substantial offensive upside--yet we have basically given up the rights to control his second and third year contracts and might even cut him outright? Doesn\'t make sense--if he ends up getting cut--picked up and excells--it will look like a total blunder. If you go and trade for someone with a pick and he performs as well as can be expected--why don\'t you treat him with more respect?

Who wouldn't pay $400K to sit next to big game?

Respect? This is Big Jim Dolan's Knicks we're talking about here.

It's the worst run organization in professional sports. What else would you expect?

Worst run organization in professional sports?

Maybe they were before isiah. Isiah has been making it work. Has he been making it win? Not yet but 2007 looks to be a close one.

I've heard that every off season. I used to be one of the guys saying it every off season too until I realized I was just hoping it would finally work.

THis should be the year that we finally start to see some results or else IT will be shown the door. Playoffs or bust baby.

I guess the one-year contract retains Nichols' rights through training camp, but the Knicks still need to lose 2 players before the season starts. I cannot believe that there is no team in the league willing to take Jones and Dickau. The bobcats need a backup pg now that Knight is gone. Can't we just give them DIckau. I know teams like Miami, Cleveland, or even Dallas could use another body like Jones. Why can't we at least give these guys away if nothing else? I think it will happen eventually.

Papabear says

I don't understand it, if Nichols is all that then whats the problem? Why ship him oversee when we need a pure shooter. I'm starting to beleive that more politics are in the game of basketball than anything else. You have your elite players which is 10 percent of the players and the rest are a game of chess.

IT's gotta be trying to take away the leverage that teams have, because they know we have to cut players at some point. At least it looks like Nichols won't be one of those players.

I would think JJ1 is out, but man, if Curry went down, wouldn't he be the starting center, or would we just go small?
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)
