From today's Nypost
However, the Knicks will improve Nichols' chances of making the club by releasing point guard Dan Dickau in the next three weeks to reduce their roster to 16, according to sourcesIf the Knicks release Dickau, they will be one over the limit. Thomas wants to keep Fred Jones, his former pick in Indiana. Dickau would have been the fourth point guard after Stephon Marbury, Mardy Collins, and Nate Robinson. Dickau has just one year ($3.6M) left on his pact.

It couldn't be more obvious that they need to cut Jerome. (Sorry Marv!)

Word. Outside of the comedy he provides I'm not sure I understand his purpose on this roster.

Dickau isn't our 4th pg! He's our 2nd behind Mardy Collins! And with all the talk about Mardy's knee, I honestly don't understand how we release him.

Fred Jones does what, exactly, that we couldn't get from either Nichols or Balkman at the 2?

I think it's a matter of experience with Jones.

As for the PG situation, Dickau just wouldn't be able to play. I didn't have a problem with him per se. I don't have any idea if the guy is any good. I know he was injured a lot and hasn't played more than 67 games in 7 seasons. That 1 yr in NOH he did pretty good. 13.2 pts, 5.2 asts, 2.7 rpg and 1.1 stls in 31 mpg. He's not a great shooter and I don't think he can defend very well, so on this team I don't see it as a big loss.

If Dickie was on this team he would get no playing time. He can not defend nor shoot. Dickau is a step slow after his injury so his man will leave him open. I'm not a big Nate Robinson fan but Nate is better than this kid by far. YOu will never see Nate Robinson's man leave him open.

Fred on the other had is not a great shooter from 3 but can hit the midrange shot and create his own shot and rebound. Fred can also plays good defense.

That is 16 still. We need to clear two roster spots in order to get DNic in. Get rid of FJones and JJames. They dont give us anything we dont already have, but Nichols gives us that 3 point shooter behind of Q. Buy the dead weight out, its really that simple.

How many times has JJ actually helped us for more than 5 minutes in a game?

we have a .750 winning percentage with jerome as a starter. the numbers don't lie.

fred jones is not a good jumpshooter. defense is ok but he's undersized and in the open jumper offense of toronto, he struggled. but isiah likes him so he's a strong candidate to stay.

dickau could work but the writing is already on the wall (maybe pheonix or boston should pick him up on the cheap).

I think you are unfair in your assessment of Jones defense. It's better than ok.

not for us. he's 6'2 which means if he's playing he has to guard either the pg or sg. considering our other guards are steph at 6'3 and jamal (who doesn't play any defense), which position is fred jones going to guard?

in toronto, he had to play with tj ford, who's tiny...which meant he was guarding shooting guards. he didn't do a great job b/c of his height disdvantage. he KNOWS how to play defense, but he's not that great, and for us, he's too short to make a difference.

Its a tough decision to make if you are thinking way ahead of the game. To make sense out of this I think isiah wants to set himself up to make another move down the road and losing big James now kills that. Expiring contracts.

Not saying I agree with this thinking but I can see what could be going on in isiahs mind. As a fantasy player I can drive myself crazy thinking of ways to trade players and save other ones to make the second or third trade I really want.

August 28th I guess is when we should hear some rumors.

Fred can defend 2 guards and 3's. He has already done it. He is stronger than the average 2 guard and strong enough to guard 3's. He does not have to guard point guards because whoever is running the point at the time that Fred is on the court will guard the point guard. Height at times does not matter. Look at how Barkley and LJ played against their man at the pf. And both of them were around 6'4. Look at John Starks. He really is about 6'3 and was guarding guys like Reggie Miller who were 6'7.

Having a specialist like Jones is nice. It's not going to hurt. And it will help. But digging down and finding a specialist is what teams on the verge of titles do. TEams that are trying to build toward something, cut the specialist and fill his spot with guys that may someday grow into all-around players. Keeping Jones over Nichols(even if he bombs) is a short sighted move

Ooo, that's a good idea Jones. How about somebody who can score points in the paint? Or how about a 3 point shooter? Pat Garrity comes to mind.

need not fret. rumor has it there will be a special provision in the game rules that will allow NY to sub lines like in hockey.
