Nichols fires agent

Demetris Nichols hasn't played in his first NBA game yet, but he's already fired one agent and hired another.

Nichols, the 53rd player selected in June's NBA Draft, recently hired Neff after ending his brief relationship with Bill Duffy of BDA Associates.

According to Neff, Nichols was unhappy with the New York Knicks' roster situation. The Knicks traded for the 6-foot-8 Nichols in a draft-night deal with Portland. However, the Knicks have 16 players with fully guaranteed contracts, putting them one over the NBA's roster limit before Nichols gets factored in.

Neff said Duffy had talked with the Knicks on a plan to send Nichols, who led Syracuse in scoring last year with 18.9 points per game, to Italy for a year - an arrangement that would allow the Knicks to retain his rights.

"There was an understanding with the previous agent and the Knicks that he would go overseas," Neff said. "Unfortunately, I don't think Demetris was privy to that. He doesn't want to go overseas."

The Knicks are sending the wrong guy. Marbury is the one that wants to play in Italy.

Demetrius should have fired his agent a long time ago. He almost didn't get drafted on draft night. He was better being his own agent or hiring Master P. Now he has to find out that he has to play in Italy? Come on now. He might as well join the Harlem globetrotters traveling team in Alaska.

Nichols is forcing IT's hand. There is no way we should let this guy go and I don't even agree with sending him to Italy. Who knows how good he can be, but he showed the potential in summer league of being an above average player in this league. We need to cut or trade Jones and Dickau immediately if not sooner. I actually would rather just cut JJ1 and be done with it and then trade Jones and Dickau for a higher expiring contract to a team that needs a guard and backup pg. Morris looks like he is ready to be a backup center in this league and with Curry and Rose on the team, we already have three guys who can play center.

Awful, just awful. If Demetrius Nichols ends up playing in Italy while the likes of Fred Jones, Dan Dickau, Jared Jeffries and Jerome James are still here then we need to take a serious look at James Dolan's buy out policy.

Well we should know in one to two weeks. August 28th the expirings can be traded and I think its by Sept. 5 or something that we either have to sign Demetrius or lose the rights to him and he becomes a free agent.

ROFL!!!!! that was a great line.. Love it!!

anyway it would be criminal for the knicks not to find a spot for nichols, if it means cutting jones or dickau, then do it...

^Good post babyknicks, I agree. Why can't we just freaking cut one of these guys already. We desperately need a guy for Nicholes. We can sign hi for literally, almost free. He's high character, got good skills and can actually defend. WTF is Isiah actually thinking of sending him to Europe, when the guy who REALLY needs to go to Europe is Jamal Crawford and Nate Robsinson, so they can really work on their fundamentals.

We need to get to a point where our 10-15 guys on the roster are signed to short-term contracts that won't hurt us if we cut them. Having bench players signed to multi-year, multi-million dollar contracts just makes us think twice before we cut them and has probably at some point influenced our decision making about young players that are available.
I just hope that people will like me

What is Fred Jones going to give us that D Nichols can't?

Veteran Savvy? We got Malik for that.

Unless Fred & Dickau are being packaged in a 3 for 1, release fred

And JJ1 should just be bought out at this point- read on the board that jj1's contract has a clause releasing him from needing to be in shape- if that isn't the case, maybe isiah is waiting for him to show up out of shape so he can release him.

It looks like Isiah thought he had it all worked out, except no one told DNic! This kind of thing happens sometimes. Isiah must have a reason why he would want to send DNic away for a year.

Steph, Q, Balk, Zach, Curry, Lee, Jamal, Nate, Mardy, Jared, Chan, Morris - Malik, James, Jones & Dickau

Looking at these guys he's probably wanting to keep Jones and let Dickau go. If he can't make a deal for Artest or whoever, then he's gonna hold on and hope that the situation changes in Feb. I don't think he wants to just cut James, due to the money he's still owed and that could be a Dolan thing.

I think it sucks. I'd rather cut Jones than let DNic go. What is Jones anyway? We already know that he's not that good. He can defend, but as an all around player, DNic looks like he's gonna be better. I was just looking at the fact that DNic wasn't signed yesterday and it worried me. Now I see there was reason to be worried.

Sending Demetris Nichols to Europe isn’t about an unwillingness to cut Fred Jones or Dan Dickau. Even without those guys on the roster, where is the PT going to come from at the 3? Even finding Nichols time at the 2 is a stretch. In Europe Demetris would get plenty of PT and could continue to work on his game.
As long as we don’t end up dropping him completely, I’m not worried about what we do with the kid. A part of me says sure, let’s drop Jeffries and see what D-Nic is going to do. But the reality is, no team trying to claw its way into the playoffs in an increasingly competitive conference is going to make a move like that. Demetris just isn’t there yet.

And how do you know? Have you seen him play in an NBA game? He can shoot, he can score efficiently, he can play defense. I want him on the roster NOW, not next year. We don't need Dickau, Jones, JJ1 or JJ2 for that matter.

Scratching and clawing our way into the playoffs shouldn't be an option anyway. We should be a guaranteed seed, with our talent.

The only reason Isiah would hesistate is because of possible trades. He's holding on to guys that we know don't fit so that he can have them available for a trade.

I do agree with Bip that DNic would find it hard to get any PT on this team right now. Unless we make a move to clear a lot of the guys ahead of him, there's very little likelyhood of him seeing much PT. The move to Europe would seem to me as a last resort if he can't make a deal. i'm sure that he'd be more than happy to keep him here if we could make it work. One year in Europe isn't that bad, but I can understand DNic not wanting to go. His Agent should really explain to him how that kind of experience could help him in the long run. If it was me i'd go and make the most of it. That system is pretty good and i'm sure he'd learn a lot.

I think Nicholls gets time over Crawford and Nate this season based on his shooting ability and defensive ability.

He is a rookie, yes- but Nate is a bone headed midget and Crawford plays defense like a midget.

Greatest team weaknesses- perimeter defense, outside shooting & shot blocking.

Nicholls has the ability to bring 2 of those in the NBA.

Crawford does none well and Nate one.

Jerome James needs to get cut. Should have been cut last season. I will be very dissapointed if he is still on the roster next season.

I think Dan Dickau & Fred Jones are only going to hang around for Isiah to see what he can get for them in a trade. If he can't get anything for them then he probably ends up cutting them. Though I see him tryng to hang on to them so until the trade deadline.

I would even look into buying out Malik Rose before I let go of Nichols.

Thats the problem with the Knicks

1. We suck!
2. Better players suffer because Isiah is a bonehead

What crawford provides he always subtracts. I believe Nicholas has good potential, good confidence and a good head on his shoulders.

Marbury/Collins
Q/Nicholas
Balkman/Chandler
Randolf/Lee
Curry/Morris

If you really are trying to build for the future......
