Peers Vote Utah's Almond Top Shooter
August 4, 2007 - 7:37 am
Deseret News -
The Utah Jazz figured they were drafting a good shooter when they selected Morris Almond of Rice University with the No. 25 pick in the June NBA Draft.

The 2007 draft class agrees.

In balloting released Friday by NBA.com, which conducted voting among the 44 rookies who attended last week's NBA Rookie Photo Shoot, Almond was voted the No. 1 shooter in this year's draft class by his peers.

Not every rookie responded to every question, according to NBA.com, but Almond received nine votes to runners-up Demetris Nichols of the New York Knicks (eight) and Marco Belinelli (five) of the Golden State Warriors in answer to the poll question, "Which NBA rookie is the best shooter?"

Others with more than one vote were Portland's Taurean Green (4), Dallas' Nick Fazekas (3), Detroit's Arron Afflalo (2), Seattle's Kevin Durant (2) and Washington's Nick Young (2). Nine others received one vote each.

"Coach (Jerry Sloan) is a big believer on guys making shots, not just shooting them. Hopefully (Almond) will be the best maker of shots," said Jazz senior vice president of basketball operations Kevin O'Connor. [READ]

Shooting is such a luxury in the NBA that I still find it odd that Nichols dropped all the way to 53 in the second round.

Almond is stronger than Nichols, and is probably a better mid-range shooter than Nichols is right now, but Nichols actually has more range, is longer and has the potential to be the better defender.

Nichols was drafted way too late. But thats the norm for College Seniors these days. First round is all about potential. Then in the second round you get solid college 'vets' who know how to play but scouts think they have seen their potential already.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

That may be true in most cases, but Nichols actually improved his game every year at Cuse, and made a huge jump his senior year which shows that he's a dedicated hard worker who is still growing.

I think we made out very well in getting Chandler and DNic. I like DNic's size, quickness and length. He seems to me to be a perfect fit for what we're trying to do. We needed more guys who could defend and score. Both Chan and DNic, Fit that bill. Isiah and his staff have done a great job of finding guys like this, so I trust that they had a good idea of what Almond was and they felt better about Chan. As a raw prospect he does look better, but we'll have to see.

Isiah was taking some flak for not getting guys who are 2 way players and DNic looks like he has a chance to be that kind of player. He takes pride in his D and as he said he measured out very high on the lateral quickness tests.

I love when he gives comments like this:

"It all starts on defense and that's what I try to do," says Nichols. "Once I get a stop I think it kind of carries over to my offense."
----------------
NBA.com: It’s nice to be considered a great shooter, but you don’t want to be just a great shooter do you?
Demetris Nichols: No, I want to be a great defender, a great teammate and a great leader. I think if I work on those things I think the sky’s the limit.

NBA.com: At Syracuse you played a lot of zone, in the NBA you’re bound to play a lot more man-to-man. Does that affect what you work on day-to-day? Like do you do drills for lateral quickness?
Demetris Nichols: Not really. Actually at the combine in Orlando I was first in the slide drill. A lot of people don’t know that I’m a pretty good defender because I played zone all four years, but I’m a pretty good defender.

Isiah has to make sure this kid gets on this roster. We can't have enough guys like this.

Nichols was a spectacular pick by Isiah. I don't know if he's the 2nd best shooter in the draft, but he's certainly up there. He has to be on the roster.

there's too much haromony in this thread.

demetrius nichols sucks. he was a wasted pick. h's gonna balloon up on the knicks, just like the rest of the fatasses we have.

discuss.

I like Chandler more than Nichols because Chandler doesn't need the ball to be effective (slasher/shooter) and very good defender, rebounder and shot blocker. Not to mention his athleticism.

Nichols looks to be a very nice player, but Chandler has a lot more athleticism and versatility and it seems like he can shoot a little too...

Don't get me wrong I like both but I think Chandler's upside is bigger because of the attributes I previously mentioned. I hope Nichols is on this team because while not be a great defender, he is decent and better than Jamal on D.

I think Nichols could develop into a very good defender. He needs to gain upper body strength. His quickness and hands are good enough. It often takes players a while to adjust to playing D in the pros, so maybe he'll get a lot better. In any event like you said, he's better than Jamal and as a combo with Chandler and Balkman they gave us a very nice defensive group. I can imagine going with a quick rotating defensive unit with Mardy, Balk, Chan, DNic and Lee.

Nichols is the truth. I really like his game because he is an aggressive scorer, but he can score at a high percentage. There is no way IT cuts this guy. He has far more potential than a Fred Jones.

When you consider that Nichols plays good d, that makes this pick even better.
