Suns trade Thomas, picks to Seattle
Team also re-signs Marks

The Suns traded center Kurt Thomas this morning in a move that relieves some salary-cap pressure.

Thomas goes to the Seattle SuperSonics, along with the Suns' own 2008 and 2010 first-round draft picks in exchange for a future conditional 2nd round pick and a trade exception, worth about $8 million.

The league's new luxury tax threshold -- the number at which teams would begin to be taxed -- came in different from what the Suns expected, at $67.9 million, and would have left Phoenix more than $10 million over that number.

The Suns also re-signed Sean Marks. If draft picks Alando Tucker and D.J. Strawberry make the team, that would leave Phoenix with one roster position open. They will be looking to fill it with a free-agent front-line player.

it's amazing how a team so close to a title has to cut costs like this.

Uhh... wtf is PHX doing? Sending two #1s and KT for a conditional 2 and an exception they won't use?

i'm not even sure they are legally able to use the exception again.

Meanwhile Seattle just got a pretty good veteran rebounder/defender at the PF.

I guess this is the benefit of being under the cap. You can trade your capspace for KT and some late #1s. Well big whoop.

so the suns traded quentin + 3 #1 picks for NOTHING. wow.

alot of suns fans are not happy with sarver and d'antoni right now.

it's a shame dolan doesn't have a better support staff b/c at least dolan spends some loot.

I don't know who sarver is - GM? - but shouldn't the fans be upset with the owner and his stingy pockets?

the gm is now kerr...but he's under mandate from sarver (the owner) to dump salaries.

d'antoni was the gm last summer when he gave diaw $8+ mil a year and marcus banks $3+ mil. those 2 deals hurt them.

i think the objective for seattle was to get more #1 picks down the road since they're in full rebuild mode. they basically just spent $8 mil for those 2 picks (similar to buying picks in the draft).

I really thought that Jordan would have been all over that move, it's only a years worth of salary and kurt would have been a good player upfront next to okafur.....

They really know how to save money there......

Nash/Barbosa
Bell
Hill
Marion/Diaw
Amare

He didn't really fit their style but he still does a good job on bigs

But they're stuck with KT for a couple years instead of signing someone youthier.

Suns are throwing away #1's like they're nothing. It'll catch up to them.

So Seattle's gone from a 30 win team to a 35 win team with the addition of Kooky Kurt?
-- the preceding post was brought to you by the letter K and the number 22.

Seattle will struggle. No veteran leadership, and their most proven returning scorer right now appears to Wilcox.

On paper, I think they're worse than Boston was last year.

Everyone last year was saying KT was exactly what we needed next to Curry. Well... he's available. Dan Dickau, Fred Jones, pack your bags!

2 for 1 roster move baby!
