Watching the demeanor of the Summer Knicks was as encouraging as their unselfish brand of basketball. The first five, along with Green, played with the unusual blend of passion and discipline. When Nate tried to go overboard with the refs, Balkman was there to separate him and shut the theatrics down.

I also noticed Balkman's ability to question the refs about foul calls leading into timeouts, with respect and poise. Renaldo, on one occassion, managed to walk with one ref and make a point about calls he felt were going against the Knicks. When he needed to play enforcer, he warned one of the Kings that the rough tactics would be met with a response.

When he got wacked, he went to the line and made his free throws, with no retaliatory threats.

Balkman gets my vote as the tone-setter, the defensive-threater and the rebound-getter. He is energy and impulse: he works his ass off; he plays intelligent basketball with his head in the game at all times. Every once in a while he'll dunk in someone's grill. That is the kinda guy I want as my captain.

The Summer Knicks were different. I hope the unselfish glow burns as bright in October.

Interesting, I was wondering how the Knicks were going to replace Francis' position.

i say Jerome Turd for Team Captain. He sets a great example for our young kids to follow.

Yes, the captain can lead them to, "go get lifted" after games.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Yes, ideally you'd like your players that play the hardest to be captain...sadly its not the way things have worked in the past.

I saw a lot of the things Earl saw. He may not be ready to be captain today, but eventually he will probably be captain material. He plays the game properly. He plays hard on both ends and does whatever he can to make up for deficiencies instead of making excuses for him. We should have been targeting players like him for the past 3 years.

He has a lot of Jerome Williams in him. Maybe not team captain, but an emotional leader/fiery personality/inspirtational type.

That's the jist of it. He has the right qualities, but captains should be veterans. Q is the best choice, imo. He has the character and work ethic. He's talented. He's a positive guy who's always encouraging his teammates.

yup, that's what i was saying after i saw the first few games of him play... he brings that nastiness & the passion that is sorely needed on this team... but i don't see him as a team captain... i see David Lee as a better candidate for that... Balk is just 1 of those guys that goes out & hustles his ass off everytime his # is called & leads more by example... D Lee seems more vocal & more into every game situation, whether he's on the floor or not, on top of leading by example on the floor when he's playing... he'd be my ideal candidate sometime down the road... but for now i agree w/Q being the best choice... he's got the respect of all the players here & he plays his heart out when he's on the floor.

Thanks to NBA.com even I was able to watch the Summer League and I also think that Balkman did a great job as the "summer league" captain leading this team. It will be different of course when it comes to the season as veterans like Marbs, Q, Curry and ZachRan will not willingly give away their "position" in hierarchy to a second year player... this is not gonna happen...
Yet I really believe that players like Q, Balkman and Lee will glue the more individualistic players together... this will happen not due to the official captain but due to the hard work those guys deliver on a nightly basis and the respect this demands!

One thing about SL... The starting 5 AND Greene (who really played great!) looked rock solid!!!!
We really got a great young core and Nate might actually mature a little and become a point... I will not give up hope as he really looked very motivated to grow as a player!!!

seanc3 - you are sir nose devoid of funk

dodger78 - the only downer about Summer Knicks was that Mardy Collins didn't have the opportunity to run with the yoot squad. Excellent observation on Nate. Watching his demeanor during the pregame drills he was more focused than the dancing fool he acting like during the regular season. Hopefully, the days of someone carrying him into the pre game huddle are over.

Nate has one of the best outside shots on the team. he only needs to learn how to lead more effectively.

I worry about Quentin Richardson's back. I worry about the mileage on Marbury's knees. Those two cannot be expected to play in all 82 games. To the extent the Newest Knicks can cohere as a team will determine (win or lose) if fans will support their learning curve.

Balkman and Lee for Co-Captain in 2009.

2009 Starters - Curry, Randolph, Chandler, Nichols and Collins

Sixth man - David Lee.

Who Got Next - R Morris, (player traded for Crawford) Zeke's next sneaky draft pick
