How should we use Jamal Crawford?

You know, I've been lurking for a bit and I just wanted to deviate from all the Z-Bo, Eddy, Steph Doing Interviews Blissed talk. I notice that Jamal's been swept under the rug for the most part lately. So I just have a simple question and that is -- how do we use him next season? Do you start him at the 2 like last season? Move him to the point and let Steph be the 2 and Q be the 3 (which puts Jeffries on the bench), do you bench him and have Q start at the 2? Trade him (his contract isn't THAT bad, IMO). I'm asking b/c I'm not even sure how we'd use him next season.

Jamal will start this year. The question that might be up in the air is Q going to start over Jeffries, or Balkman. Q seemed like he was unsure if he is going to start during his interview in summer league.

My guess is that at the beginning of the season, Craw will start at 2 and Q will start at 3. Balkman will get significant minutes off the bench. If it becomes apparent that the combination of Q and Balkman is better than the combination of Craw and Q, Q will start at 2 and Balkman at 3.

Jamal is IMO a good player off the bench. He doesn't work in the SL, cuz he is a volume shooter and we will have Zach and Curry taking most of the touches. You need high % shooting and guys that will catch and shoot out there with him. We don't have a SF who can do that, but I still think the SL works best if you have Steph, Q, Jared, Zach and Curry. Jared is the problem on offense, until he can prove that he's solved his shooting problems. I think he actually has a shot at doing that. From what I saw of him last year his problem seems like it had to do with his form. His judgement on the distance and touch of his shots wasn't that bad, but he'd be off to the right or left a lot. I saw that late in the season his form looked a bit better and he surprised me with some good shooting at times. He's got more of a shooting touch than Balkman at this point, tho he's a poor finisher. I can't explain why he misses so many layups.

Back to Jamal. He's probably going to do much better this year due to what I think will be a greater focus on PG play. I think he's gonna look to setup the other players more. I also think last year was an off year for him shooting wise. He did tho, make a change in his approach at one point. He started to drive a lot more and use the little floater and pull up jumper more. He was VERY effective in doing that, so I hope continues to do that.

I would like to see this lineup at some point during the game, and even move q in for collins sometimes

Crawford, Collins, Balkman, Lee Curry

If you want to let jamal and eddy operate i think thats fine, but as far as energy a little defense and allowing the baby bulls to be scorers its a good mix of finishers, defenders, and energy

Based on the rotation I would think we'd see something a bit more like JC, Mardy, Balk, Lee & Zach. Smaller quicker but still with a focus inside.

I'd start Jamal at PG & trade Marbury if i could, but Isiah would never do that, so I think Jamal's role is best suited coming off the bench as a backup combo G & starting Q Rich at the 2.

I hope Balkman Starts and Q comes off the bench...... the guy has one guard skill, spot up shooting........... he isn't a guard.

Without making any moves I think Jamal is best suited for the 6th man role. If he could mentally adjust to it, I'd say he's perfect for it. Eddie and Zach are going to be demanding the ball. Marbs is going to have days where he is not feeding the big men. The last thing we want to do is add another offensive player to that mix. Unless that offensive player played some D. Which Jamal doesn't. Our starting unit will be a slow up offense. We have no shotblocking and will need some perimeter defense or we will be blaming the fans and refs for our losses again. Personally I think our best bet will be Q at the 2 and Renaldo at the three. The double teams will be alleviated by having two big guys so this will at least help with the lack of a consistent shooter. It's not ideal, but I think it's the best way to start the game.

Then you use Jamal as the 6th man. He can lead the second unit which will be much more uptempo. If he's shooting well you can certainly keep him in with the 1st unit when they return(considering matchups). But when he's not shooting well, you really don't need him there. You have plenty of offense.

WE have to play to our strenghths. Nobody on our team is going to stretch out the defense with their shooting(hopefully one day it will be Nichols) so we have to play to our strengths. With a line-up of Curry, Zach, Renaldo/Lee, Q and Steph you will have some obvious flaws but they can really dominate on the boards. At least one advantage.

Big men are as good as the guards that get them the ball. I don't need four players 7 feet away from the basket to rebound one ball. I do need my Guards to play with guard skills though.

I think you have to keep his minutes synched up with Curry, and Mardy as much as possible.

That probably means you start him and bring Mardy in the game for Steph later in the game when Craw is in.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

I'm in agreement here. You can keep Zach on the bench and keep him fresh for the fourth quarter. So when Curry is the lone big man you can have Craw feeding him the ball. But with that scenario you really need guys like Mardy and Balkman that can play defense and not need to shoot the ball.

This is one of the issues when your team is lacking balance. Everynight Isiah will need to try to find the magic formula to win on that particular night and no coach can do that. If we are going to take it to the next level we are going to have to force our guys to play both ends or find some guys that will(as well as find guys that can shoot. Without it as we saw last year, it leaves far too many variables.

on this team, THERE IS NO OTHER CHOICE but to start jamal.

the ONLY slightly viable option is quentin but considering isiah "longs" for jamal, i don't expect anything more than him starting at the sg position, near the top in minutes, and no lower than #2 in fga's.

I would have to agree that at one time Isiah was "rock hard" for Jamal Crawford, however the sitauation has drastically changed from last season with the Zach deal.

With another post presence, Isiah is not so desparate to cover up Eddies poor passing ability with Jamal's off balance chucking. We also don't need someone to feed Eddy as badly because we have another player to feed. Marbury pick and Roll's with Zach are going to be very effective.

Additionally, both Renaldo Balkman and David Lee have another year of experience and will be pusing Curry for minutes at the 4/5 and Balkman will be taking more minutes at the 3, leaving less for Crawford. At the same time nate has another year of experience and will be pushing crawford for minutes.

Additionally, Q's back may be better which will also be pushing jamal for minutes.

That being said, although Isiah doesn't need Crawford nearly as much as last year, we likely will be seeing a decent amount of his game, at least in the beginning.

Isiah has already shown that he views Jamal as a bench player. If Q can play he's gonna start at the 2 and Jared will likely start at SF, unless Isiah makes a drastic change and goes with Balkman, which I don't see. To me it's clear that it's gonna be Steph, Q, Jared, Zach and Curry - Jamal, Lee, Balk etc. This is the big 8 in his rotation and then everyone else fits in where they can. The only thing that will keep us up around 9-10 man rotation is the health of Steph and Q. They may see their minutes cut and thus you'll see some more of Mardy and Nate. My gut tells me that we'll also see Nichols get some burn at some point. He's just too good of a shooter to not make use of him at some point. Even it it's only in limited action.

If Q is healthy and Jeff is improved in terms of his shooting and overall confidence, that's a helluva lineup.

Jeff supposedly has been nasty in the offseason, but I want to see it before I buy into that.
