LAS VEGAS, July 15, 2007 -- Moments before the Knicks took the floor for their last game at the NBA Summer League, I walked up to Nate Robinson and asked him one question.

About 10 minutes later, I finally got around to asking him a second one.

Robinson is known for his nonstop chatter. And as everyone got to see firsthand during New York’s five games in Sin City, he will soon be known as a superb lead guard, too.

From the opening tap of the Knicks’ first game, there was never a doubt as to who was in charge on the floor.

If you closely watched the action, you saw that Robinson had a way of telling guys where to be or correcting them after a mistake that didn’t come across as discipline. It was reminiscent of a big brother helping out a younger sibling.

“We’re running the same offense here that we run under Isiah (Thomas) so that makes it easier for me,” Robinson said. “I know everybody’s spot. I can tell a guy where he should have caught the ball or that he should have taken a certain shot.”

Robinson has emerged as one of the league’s most popular players because of his size (5-feet, 9-inches) and because he has won a slam dunk title. Now, the two-year veteran is gaining notoriety for being a floor general.

“I like to have fun and I’ve been having a good time,” Robinson said. “When I’m out there, I try to make other people relax so that they don’t think about other stuff. That's the type of person I am.”

While Robinson, who finished in the top five in the league in assists with an average of six per game, was busy setting his teammates up for easy buckets, he also found time to score some points of his own. He averaged 18.8 points per game on 48 percent from the field for New York, which finished 5-0 after defeating the Nuggets on Sunday.

“I try to get better and better each game,” Robinson said. “That is my mentality each day. When I got here, I said I wanted to win and that I also wanted to lead the summer league in assists. I’ve been working on things like keeping my dribble alive longer.”

When the initial Race to the MVP came out, it only included games played through July 11. Robinson, who had only played two games to that point, was not included on that list.

He jumped up to fifth in the rankings when the updated version of the R2MVP came out just two days later. That is what scoring 44 points and handing out 17 assists in two games will do for you.

New York’s two big draft-night pickups, Wilson Chandler and Demetris Nichols, also played very well, and Renaldo Balkman was a defense and rebounding terror.

“All of the rookies are doing good and we are sharing the ball and playing as a team," said Robinson while pointing at Balkman. "Balkman is an energy guy. Look at him. He doesn’t look like a basketball player. Then the game starts and he just turns it on. He is long and real active on the ball. He gives weakside help and doesn’t like to let anybody score on him. He does a lot for the team.”

Hey Nate, so do you.

Judging by some of the recent threads I've seen concerning Nate, I'm sure most here could care less if he won MVP of the Summer league, but it is Knick news/and it aint bad Knicks news for a change so I figured I'd post this........

Congrats to Nate. Mostly, he looked like he was under control. That's a good sign for him.

He looks better than he did last year but he still needs to get his game under even more control. I did like the fact that he made some very good passes during the games, which shows that his recognition of where players are going to be and how to get them the ball has improved. Nate showed enough improvement over the course of the summer league to probably continue the experiment to see if he can be turned into a backup pg, but I don't hold out high hopes that it will work.

Gus and Clyde had a funny exchange while discussing Nate:

Gus: Nate's always talking about something...

Clyde: ...or nothing.

I don't see how he tries to make other people relax when he's always jawing with officials about his stupid ticky tack fouls.

I'd agree that Nate is a competitor and wants to win, but I haven't seen a player that tries to help other people relax.

There was one absolutely sick crossover and tear drop move that Nate used in Saturday's game. He can do some pretty insane things out there on the court. In the summer league he started to use his penetrating ability to be more of a playmaker and I hope he continues with that. He's never gonna be a true PG who's gonna efficiently run an offense, but he can be a slashing, playmaking type guard and put points on the board.

I like that Nate acknowledged that he needs to be a more complete player. I think he did a good job of putting that to practice on the summer league courts. He still needs to focus a little more on the game and less on the chattering and showmanship but it's not a horrible situation. His decision making was okay in my view, but not great. A lot of those whip passes to the middle and dribbling through double teams works great in summer league but will result in turnovers with the better players in the NBa.

Overall I'm happy with the adjustments he made but he still has a ways to go. Most importantly I think Nate will be better use to us in a trade. He really just doesn't fit our team at this point in time, IMO. I think that back up SG should be a bigger player that can thrive in the halfcourt(see Eddie and Zach if you need to know why) and most importantly defend bigger guards and possibly SF. And the backup PG should be a heady and savvy player that can run the halfcourt with the first team and the full court with the second team.

Nate played well and congratulations to him. I don't want to take too much away from him as I'm glad to see him improve his game, but as far as the MVP award goes, I wonder how man other 3rd year players where getting as many minutes as him? The ascent in a players progress is probably steepest in his first three years in the league, giving Nate a decided advantage over most other SL participants.

Anyway, good to see him upping his worth.

Mardy?

The one way small PGs can be advantageous is when they pester and press ballhandlers their entire trip up-court, and get a lot of steals. I really expected more of that from Nate, though perhaps Isiah simply doesn't demand it of him.

Nates a two year vet, 3rd summerleague and an incredible talent. He should dominate summerleague.

Its better he succeed than not, and it lead to a 5-0 which is better than not, so there is all good about this summerleague. I like nate in a supporting role off the bench and as a trading asset. I want to see him succeed either here or elsewhere, but words either by him or Isiah are meaningless.

MVP of summerleague is nice, just not all that great.

I suggest you actually check out the player rosters or watch the games. The majority of SL participants are a whose who of has beens and never was. You can actually see guys who hadn't been in the league for years. Hell, Tskitishvili is patrolling the SL rosters.

And on that note. As Blueseats and Nalod just indicated that a 3rd year player should dominate the Summer League. All of you still high on Gerald Green please check in because the boy just looked awful. I was once high on this kid but he doesn't have a clue.

It would have been nice to see him in summer league. It's a possibility. He showed a solid all around game last year but he still has a lot to work on. He's a capable backup at this point.

I wonder if clyde has gotten to work with Mardy yet. I haven't heard him mention. Perhaps the knee surgery put that on delay.

Actually the Knicks SL squad never consisted of any of their Top 5 starters getting DNP'd, meanwhile they were playing against teams who were DNPing some of their main starters. Take for instance when we played GSW 4rth game Bellini, Pierce, and some other guy got no burn at all. That's why you can't look at SL games with any true sense of player assessment. Nichols and Chandler looked like they deserve a shot to crack the rotation other than that I take nothing away from what I saw the past 2weeks and nor should anyone else.
