I thought that, under the latest guidelines, new contracts couldn't run longer that five years. Am I wrong about this?

Smith said it appears a proposed sign-and-trade deal with Lewis' former team, the Seattle SuperSonics, is a no-go. The maneuver would have allowed the Magic to create cap space to perhaps re-sign Milicic and provide Lewis with a lucrative sixth year, but Smith contends Cornstein [Milicic's agent] all but sabotaged the deal on his end with the Sonics.
Lewis, 27, is expected to sign a five-year contract worth nearly $100 million, roughly $97 million based on the new salary-cap ceiling projected by the league to be an estimated $56 million per team. Lewis' salary likely will start at $16.8 million, with the obligatory 8 percent raise each season. Technically, Lewis could have been signed after midnight, which might tempt the Magic. Smith conceded that other teams have tried wooing Lewis after he left Orlando last week upon agreeing in principle to a contract. It was no wonder Smith said that the 11-day moratorium -- the time between recruiting a player and actually signing him -- leaves him uneasy. "At that point,'' Smith said, "I just have a handshake deal. . . . I know for a fact they [Lewis' camp] were getting phone calls.'' The Magic expect to sign all-star Howard on Thursday to a five-year extension worth at least $80 million. Howard, 21, apparently has an option after the fourth season. His extension doesn't kick in until the 2008-09 season. Nelson also is eligible to sign an extension. Smith said he would be meeting this weekend with Steve Mountain, Nelson's agent, to talk about that possibility. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/orl-lewis1107jul11,0,3190468.story [Edited by - pharzeone on 11-07-2007 09:06 AM] I don't like to play bad rookies , I like to play good rookies - Mike D'Antoni
