FREE-AGENT BUZZ: With the Magic being key players in this month's free-agent sweepstakes, their imminent acquisition of coveted small forward Rashard Lewis has been all the buzz of the summer league.

Lewis' agent, Tony Dutt, was at the camp Monday, finalizing the negotiations with the Magic. Lewis is expected in town Wednesday, the first day that free agents can sign contracts, to ink a six-year megadeal with the Magic.

Orlando has agreed to a sign-and-trade deal with the Seattle SuperSonics that will allow Lewis to make $126.4 million over the next six seasons, according to NBA sources who requested anonymity. The Magic will send back a second-round pick to the Sonics.

With the 2007-08 salary cap set Tuesday night at $56.63 million, Lewis' first-year salary with the Magic will be $16.68 million -- the maximum allowable for a player with nine years of NBA experience. From there, he'll get 10.5 percent annual raises. That will take the deal to a mind-boggling $25.2 million for the 2012-13 season.

Now that is funny. If that is true, Orlando is a joke. That is more than any other player in the league other than maybe Garnett.

I don't believe this at all.

It doesn't fit the CBA salary cap guidelines

RealGM Note: In addition to the above, the maximum player salaries for first year salaries in new contracts (those signed after July 10, 2007) as well as the first year salaries of maximum extensions (signed prior to the 06-07 season) will be the greater of 105% of the player's previous salary or the following:

$13,041,250 for players with 0-6 Years of Service

$15,649,500 for players with 7-9 Years of Service

$18,257,750 for players with 10 or more Years of Service

Therefore I don't buy the other part of the story. It's speculation and hype.

I think it is close to the truth because they are now at $39 million (which to get there they have to clear Darko cap allocation) and now they can't do a deal with him unless Seattle did a S&T. Smith misplayed his hands thinking the Knicks had a shot. It's all over the Orlando papers. Why he expected Seattle to bail him out is beyond me. The salary cap only be raised to $55 million really hurt them.

even if its $15MM- over six years with no increase- that is $90MM. Way too much coin for a player like lewis.

Sorry- but this blows away any deal that the knicks have made- makes the allan houston contract look like a bargain.

I thought that, under the latest guidelines, new contracts couldn't run longer that five years. Am I wrong about this?

Jesus, Rashard is a pretty good player but he's nowhere near worth a max player.. the contracts in the NBA have seriously gotten out of hand.

with sign and trades the old team can sign the player to an additional year making it 6 and thus making the offering price more. It's also a way for Seattle to get some kind of talent back, maybe darko.

Smith said it appears a proposed sign-and-trade deal with Lewis' former team, the Seattle SuperSonics, is a no-go. The maneuver would have allowed the Magic to create cap space to perhaps re-sign Milicic and provide Lewis with a lucrative sixth year, but Smith contends Cornstein [Milicic's agent] all but sabotaged the deal on his end with the Sonics.

Lewis, 27, is expected to sign a five-year contract worth nearly $100 million, roughly $97 million based on the new salary-cap ceiling projected by the league to be an estimated $56 million per team.

Lewis' salary likely will start at $16.8 million, with the obligatory 8 percent raise each season.

Technically, Lewis could have been signed after midnight, which might tempt the Magic. Smith conceded that other teams have tried wooing Lewis after he left Orlando last week upon agreeing in principle to a contract.

It was no wonder Smith said that the 11-day moratorium -- the time between recruiting a player and actually signing him -- leaves him uneasy.

"At that point,'' Smith said, "I just have a handshake deal. . . . I know for a fact they [Lewis' camp] were getting phone calls.''

The Magic expect to sign all-star Howard on Thursday to a five-year extension worth at least $80 million. Howard, 21, apparently has an option after the fourth season. His extension doesn't kick in until the 2008-09 season. Nelson also is eligible to sign an extension. Smith said he would be meeting this weekend with Steve Mountain, Nelson's agent, to talk about that possibility.

The worst part is that the Magic was trying to give him his $126 million but Milicic's agent got in the way. So now he doesn't get his sixth season of $25 million. And they are piss with Milicic and his agent.
