“I think he had a down year.”

“I mean, he’s a 24-year-old player in this league,” he said. “Guys don’t peak, especially bigs don’t peak, until 28, 29. So we’ve got five years to develop him.”

- Portland’s general manager, Kevin Pritchard, on Channing Frye.

It says that you're an idiot to judge "One dimensional", "Undrafted", "No Offense" and "Headcase" based on age only.

Indeed
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

He is just trying to justify the deal for Frye. Although I agree that Frye has not peaked yet and will probably be better than he showed last season.

LAS VEGAS, July 7 — Channing Frye had a new jersey number and a new identity awaiting when he landed here Saturday morning. His chest and shoulders were thicker, and his outlook unmistakably brighter.

Two years after coming to Las Vegas as a highly regarded Knicks rookie — only to find disappointment and mayhem in New York — Frye returned here as a happy new member of the young and highly promising Portland Trail Blazers.

The Knicks dealt Frye, the eighth overall pick in 2005, to the Blazers on draft night, in exchange for Zach Randolph. After making the best of a bad situation in New York, Frye seemed thrilled to get a new start in Portland, where he is joining one of the most talented young rosters in the league.

“Oh, I loved it,” Frye said Saturday, in his first interview since the trade. “It’s the best place for me to be right now. All the players that are here, I love them already. It’s going to be a great situation for both the Blazers and myself. I couldn’t be happier, from going back to the West Coast to playing with younger guys and having a great coaching staff.”

Frye, who grew up in Arizona, was so eager to get started with his new team that he flew here Saturday to work out with the Blazers’ summer-league team. He will not play in the games, but being here gives him a head start on team bonding. Two of his frontcourt mates — center Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the June draft, and forward LaMarcus Aldridge, a lottery pick in 2006 — are playing on the team. Guard Brandon Roy, the rookie of the year, is also here, though not playing.

Frye said he was not seeking a trade, but he certainly did not mind it, either. After a promising rookie year, Frye stumbled last season as the offense became dominated by center Eddy Curry. Bumped out of the low post, Frye was relegated to taking 18-foot jumpers, and his confidence suffered. His scoring average dipped from 12.3 points as a rookie to 9.5 points last season.

Asked if Curry’s growth had come at his expense, Frye said: “Stuff is going to happen. Good for him. That’s why I’m here right now.”

“We call him a little bit of a fallen angel,” Portland’s general manager, Kevin Pritchard, said of Frye. “I think he had a down year.”

Pritchard said that he had been high on Frye since the 2005 draft, and that his enthusiasm had not waned.

“I mean, he’s a 24-year-old player in this league,” he said. “Guys don’t peak, especially bigs don’t peak, until 28, 29. So we’ve got five years to develop him.”

TheGame - understandably, any GM who just traded away 23 and 10 must look to balancing the equation so the deal appears more acceptable in terms of on-court production.

whether now or in the future

in your opinion, what are the peak years for an NBA big man?

If Frye is given consistent minutes at roughly 25 minutes a game (he is not starting over Aldridge or Oden), then I think he will be a 14-15/7 type of guy who will work nicely with Oden. He will be like a less athletic Joe Smith or a Donyell Marshall type. Nothing fancy but a solid rotation player who will specialize in offense. I also think his defense will become acceptable as he develops physically. All in all, I think Frye will be a decent player in this league. The thing he has over most shooting big men is that he has a midrange and post game; he is not somebody who has to just sit out on the perimeter but he can also post players up. But he is not going to match the production of Zack Randolph.

Peak years for a center? Years 4 to 8 I'd say.

TheGame - Frye has the type of frame that can probably handle a few extra pounds. If he listens to more Wu-Tang Clan he could slide to center.

But like you said, he ain't going to match the production, or the flair, of Zach Randolph, who is still two years away from his peak years.

If bonn has it right, as I feel he does, I'm curious about the maturity of the other bonus selection, Randolph Morris in four years.

there are some questions we don't know the answer to:

how will microfracture effect z-bo's knees and career as it moves forward?
how will eddy's heart hold up (if it's more than an ephedra rumored side effect)?
is david lee gonna be injured often due to his all out style of play?
randolph doesn't seem to have these issues as he doesn't seem to waste too much movement.

but i feel a bigger issue might be the impact on the body for these young bigs that come right out of high school or 1 year of school. kg seems to have been able to survive any costly injuries throughout his career...but jermaine is a broken down caboose. even amare had microfracture.

Zach seems to have fully (or near fully) recovered like Jason Kidd. He might just be a success case where the surgery got him completely back to the pre-injury state.

EitherChanning Frye is a bigtime wuss, or he played his way out of NY very quietly and has a lot to show the NBA from out west.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

who ever sold the next twin towers of oden and frye could be the reason some felt z-bo came cheap. i hope ny did not leave a bad taste cause if it did channing will have a lot to prove in portland

We spent all our time developing Curry up front last year and nothing was done to develop Frye or put him in a position where we could really accent his game. I'm a firm believer in that. That being said, he's not gonna be good on defense, he's not gonna block shots, he's always gonna be a below average rebounder, and even though he can do it, he's not gonna play in the post as much as a guy 6'11 should.

But he has the potential to be a real good offensive player...a real good scorer in this league. He's smart- he can pass the ball and he can run the pick and roll. Put him in the high post and put him a motion offense like what Sacramento used to run with Webber and Miller and he'll thrive.

they have Aldridge Oden and Roy. Seems to me the trade wasn't about the numbers but moreso a new direction with those 3 as the centerfold just like the Marbury trade. Frye will do fine backing up the 4/5 especially with the loss of Magloire.
the stop underrating David Lee movement 1. FIRE MIKE 2. HIRE MULLIN 3. PAY AVERY 4. FREE NATE!!!

>>It says that you're an idiot...

to judge "One dimensional" - Eddy Curry

"Undrafted" - Randolph Morris

"No Offense" - David Lee

and "Headcase" - Zach Randolph - based on age only.

(sheesh)

Age only? Hardly. My impaired judgement of the Knicks new frontcourt is based on the possibility they could cohere and learn to move in sync with one another by February.

Now I'm an idiot? Cool.

I may be an idiot islesfan, but I absolutely, positively and absolutely can NOT be down with anyone who gloats when the Knicks lose. Ergo, I can NOT be down with the drive-by bad vibes you shoot off at every opportunity.

(especially in early July on the eve of the first Summer League run)

Homey don't play that

"No Offense" - David Lee
11 PPG off the bench on 60% and very good passing qualifies as "no offense"???

"Frye in five years will be..."

A solid backup center. That's all.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.
