The Curry trade revisited

The Knicks' controversial acquisition of Eddy Curry from the Bulls in 2005 has been analyzed and lampooned from Day 1. With only a 2009 second-round pick still to be exchanged, it's time to tally up the goods.

The Knicks got

Curry.

Renaldo Balkman (the 20th pick in the 2006 draft from Denver in the Antonio Davis trade).

Wilson Chandler (the 23rd pick in '07 swapped with Chicago's for No. 9).

The Bulls got
Tyrus Thomas (the No. 4 pick in '06 acquired from Portland for No. 2 pick LaMarcus Aldridge).

Joakim Noah (the No. 9 pick in '07 swapped with the Knicks' No. 23).

Thabo Sefolosha (the No. 13 pick in '06 acquired from Philadelphia for the rights to 16th pick Rodney Carney and the Knicks' No. 38 pick in '07, Kyrylo Fesenko, whose rights the 76ers traded to Utah for the rights to No. 55 pick Herbert Hill and future considerations).

Of course, if the lottery had given the Bulls the first or second pick in this draft, this deal would've gone from decent to disastrous for the Knicks. But unless the second-round pick the Bulls get from the Knicks in 2009 turns into the next Gilbert Arenas, Carlos Boozer or Manu Ginobili, the Knicks will have done OK here.

Thomas needs time to develop after averaging 5.2 points in 13.4 minutes as a rookie. But Sefolosha's name has been more prominent in trade rumors than boxscores, and the Bulls might have overestimated Noah's value based on the talent he played with at Florida.

Just something to think about. Check back with me in 2012 for the final tally. - Ken Berger

i don't recall the consensus, but does the cap space used to sign ben wallace factor in at all?

if so, it's interesting that they got three very similar guys in wallace thomas and noah with assets from the trade. i guess scott skiles has his type, isiah has his.

hey solace, I didn't type this, I pulled it from Newsday.

But, since you are so sure, who did we get in the swap of first round picks?

The Curry trade is looking pretty good for us right now. I don't think any players Chicago got from us, Sweets and TT included match up to Eddy Curry. BTW, can you post the link?

Tyrus Thomas only played one yr and Joakim hasn't even touch the court yet. It's too early to say who got the best out of this trade.

True. Everyone should have waited in attacking Isiah about the Curry trade because we don't know who got the best player in the trade until all the players reach their prime. These pessimists love to speculate. They have no patience right Cookcokehop?

Oh excuse me is it over? Did Curry retire this year and I didn't know? Man I thought he was still playing and that the team was still being improved. It's all over guys. No need to continue to analyze how this will turn out.

Chances are they never draft Thomas since they already had Frye, Lee and about 3 other guys on the roster to play the 4. They needed help, and still do, at the 2 and 3.

Brandon Roy or Rudy Gay would have been the most obvious choices with the 2nd pick overall.

This year with the moronic trade for Randolph and Lee still being there, they probably don't take Noah. I think they would take either Law, T Young, Thornton or J Wright with the 9th pick or even trade down.

Any combination beats Curry and Wilson by far, talent wise and in the most important win column.

Funny how you don't have the same reaction when people claim that the edge goes to the Knicks, even though Noah hasn't played a minute yet. Or maybe Noah retired already, I don't know.

It was Balkman for an expiring contract. The Knicks could have used another expiring contract to make that trade. They just happened to use AD's, who happened to be a part of the Curry trade. Stop trying to make the trade look better by adding players to it who weren't involved.

Jesus, what is with Knick fans trying to give Isiah the benefit the doubt here?

The trade was no more than this:

Tim Thomas, Mike Sweetney, Joakim Noah, Tyrus Thomas, 2 2nd Rounders

for

Antonio Davis, Eddy Curry, Wilson Chandler

If you're gonna count Balkman (like he even matters), then you have to account for the cap space Chi got re: Ben Wallace, or the trade the Bulls made ala Aldridge for Tyrus and the pick that became that Khyrpya guy.

Aka STFU Newday or BabyKnicks or whoever.

The trade sucked.......OBVIOUSLY.

DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

Sorry thats just not true.
1) The Knicks offered Pennys contract first and it was turned down.
2) Torontos management met with AD and convinced him to come play for them even though he was later let go.
