while some are only interested in speculation over Kobe, I found it curioius that another one of Stephon Marbury's good works was swept under the carpet to make room for Kobe talk. What were the details and who were the beneficiaries of the $1M donations?

June 17, 2007 -- Stephon Marbury opened his wallet to New York City policemen, firemen and teachers yesterday and opened his arms to Kobe Bryant becoming a Knick.

In an appearance yesterday in Marbury's hometown Coney Island, he announced a series of $1 million donations then addressed the brewing Bryant saga....

Marbury.

Kudos to Steph. That is absolutely outstanding.

Marbury said he is allocating profits from his $14.98 Starbury sneakers and upcoming children's books to make $1 million donations to the NYPD, fire department, EMT and New York City teachers.

Who was it here who said they were waiting for Marbury to give away his profits from the Starburys to prove that they are on balance a magnanimous venture? Well, there ya go.

people criticize marbury but i think he came a long way, especially this season. he has always been generous but in the past few years all they want to point out are his flaws. this seaosn, i thought he put those accusations to rest by playing unselfish ball and motivating his team the best he could. i hope it continues because the last time that happened in phoenix and he helped them to the playoffs, the next year he slumped back into his old habits. oh, and i support the starbury shoes. my son and i have the starbury crossovers which i think are nice, though i can see it not lasting that long if you play basketball everyday.

"Being able to help those programs that would allow EMS to hire 2-3 people, if it saves more lives, I'm down for that," Marbury said. "I felt compelled to do that."

Marbury has added a new wrinkle to his summer-long basketball tournament, with players required to read three books and write an essay. Marbury, who has two years and $42 million left on his contract, made a $10,000 donation to the Brooklyn Public Library two weeks ago.

He's summer reading too. It's good stuff from Steph.

While people like Rudy have been on the scene and been hailed for their efforts with fire fighters, (especially post 9-11), it is the leaders like Marbury who have stepped in with donations of CASH to assist the working class of New York.

He's been reading some concerns from others, you better believe that. It also goes to show how much money he's making off these shoes. Good for Steph the light has clicked on and he gets the full picture.

God you make me sick. Damning him with faint praise. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Are you so small-minded that you can't stand up and unequivocally praise Steph for the magnificence of his contribution to society? All you can think of saying is "ooo he's making so much money from his shoes".

The way I see it, and the way every single normal human being sees it, is Steph is losing $100+ on the value of every pair of sneakers he sells, and yet he still gives his profits away to charity.

You should be ashamed of yourself TrueBlue. I am officially standing up and calling you out for your embarassing comments. I hope you're man enough to take it back.

Is he giving away "his profits" or is he giving away a small part of them?

Or is the partnership that he's in donating money for tax purposes?

Good for Starbury. Next time do it without the publicity and take the money directly out of your bank account and not directly tied to profits from a business venture.

Isles, even in your worst case scenario, this is still a huge charitable donation from a high-profile individual.

I can't understand why people find so difficult to differentiate between Marbury the player and Marbury the person. If you guys were honest you would admit that if the donor of all this money wasn't Stephon Marbury you would all be lauding him to the heavens. Its sad.

I wish he didn't broadcast the donations so soon, it give critics a chance to accuse him of do it for publicity only.

But his heart is in the right place, so you have to ask yourself many others donate but we don't hear about them.

Andrew - thank you for the link to the Berman piece.

BasketballJones - that was weak. Only people who are hellbent on seeing the negative side ( of what they want to see ) will attempt to diminish what Marbury is doing to change the plight of those less fortunate than him.

Such is also the plight of people who claim that Marbury is doing his good works in search of publiity. Little happens in New York City that is not touched by the media. However, if another athlete, average citizen or celebrity follows his lead then the publicity is a good thing.

You go Steph.

What does it matter what part of his profits is coming from. The end result is the same, he is donating his money to a good cause. So what if he get publicity, i dont mind him getting this kind of publicity.

Seriously, I appreciate the good things Marbury is doing, and I think he is sincere in wanting to good things. But why do we need to hear about it every time? Lots of people are doing great things every day, but we don't hear about it here. What is the relevance? Because some UK posters don't like him as a ball player?
