dumars must be taken to task for taking darko at #2, when the future could've include wade, bosh, or melo.
Clearly it was a mistake in retrospect and I'm sure Dumars would admit it, but at the time is has to be remembered they weren't serious contenders yet. They got to the conference finals where they got swept by NJ. This was before they got Sheed, so the idea of a talented scoring bigman to pair with Wallace made sense. Remember, before Sheed re-signing Okur was their "highest priority," but after Sheed came re-signing Sheed was their highest priority. Even Bosh, like Darko, would have had a stunted development behind Sheed and Ben.
And with Rip and Prince on board a solid bigman was their highest priority.
It's easy to say it was all a huge mistake now, but it's also important to recognize that Sheed was the crucial piece, and that he Rip and Prince did result in a championship. There's no guarantee that Wade, Carmelo or Bosh would have done the same for them - by which I mean to say they could have made the "right choice" in that draft, but without Sheed they still might not have won the 'ship, and might have done no better this year than they did. So, even with the huge mistake I don't know that they sit any worse than Miami, Denver or Toronto today.
This suggests that a sound GM can sustain some mistakes and still look pretty good, while the bad ones will forever have to regret the ones that got away.
