Jeff Van Gundy was dismissed as Rockets coach on Friday, less than two weeks after the Rockets' first-round loss to the Utah Jazz.

After initial ambivalence about returning to the team as coach, Van Gundy had made his desire to be back clear. The Rockets, however, had already begun an extensive interview process with former Kings, Warriors and Trail Blazers coach Rick Adelman who is considered the only candidate to replace Van Gundy.

Van Gundy had told the Rockets that he would not object to the team looking into its coaching options.

On Thursday, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey offered Van Gundy another position with the team, expected to be in a consulting role. Van Gundy has turned down that role.

Van Gundy was 430-318 in 11 seasons as an NBA coach, 182-146 in four seasons with the Rockets. He has a 44-44 postseason record, losing in the first round to the Lakers in 2004, the Mavericks in 2005 and the Jazz this season. Their trip to the 2004 post season was their first since 1999. The Rockets' 52-win season this year was their best since 1996-97

apparently jvg turned out 2 contract extension offers during the season. looks like he was leaving after this year regardless of the outcome.

don't follow the Rockets too much but this seems like a weird move by JVG unless he was just getting burnt out or didn't jive with management.

He had his big man, superstar, Shane... that's a lot to work with.

I agree. I mean he was out in the tough west, but he had alot of pieces to work with and the team seemed willing to spend some money. You could not really ask for more.

apparently, he knew a new gm was coming in and they were totally going to keep him out of the personnel moves.

tmac + yao + shane is good.

but the reason they don't advance is b/c they have NOTHING else on the roster. and tmac + yao constantly get hurt.

bringing in adelman MAY help their cause with bonzi wells but they still need a new PG, PF, and a bench.

The Rockets desperately need a real point guard. Mix tape head cases won't take your team anywhere.

They weren't hurt during the playoffs. They should have won especially with Homecourt advantage. No excuses.

Kinda of don't make since if he was (A) fired (B) Van Gundy had made his desire to be back clear.

Unless this was done to collect unemployment. You don't fire a guy who wanted to leave anyway if you wanted him back.

I think Jeff sees what many in the biz see that 4 years is about enough and then its time to walk away intact. Jeff had very little to work with beyond his two stars and perhaps has had enough of those two after a few years.

Players all fall deaf on the coaches after while. 4 years is a long time in this business. Dude made some serious jack on this contract.

Hmmm... Maybe you missed it, he was fired. Are you missing something. He was not happy that he was only offered a 2 year extension. He then relented and asked that the Rockets retain him and they decided not to. LOL, when you are terminated the choice is left out of your decision making about returning to work.

I love JVG for the great job he did in NY but I also was disappointed when he quit on the team and the fans.

With that being sad, he had Yao, McGrady and Battier and couldn't get out of the First Round.

BTW, the Rockets lost a Game 7 on their homecourt and afterwards, JVG has the nerves to wanna play "hard to get" with Rockets management...they should have fired him.

Yeah, I said it.

And I say that while knowing very well that it was his intention to get fired, and continue to get paid. The man aint no fool.

I think he does' get burned out a little when what he probably feels that the team should have developed well above it's level by then and has not, so he needs the time off and maybe to move on. One thing you can always count on with Jeff is, he will give management those four or five years to make the moves to take it all the way. After that, if it ani't happening, then he leaves. He saw us going into the ground and he left, rightfully so. I' wouldv'e. But he stuck it out with us. I still think the big Camby right smash to the face sealed it. I think in the current direction we are going right now with the young talent, it would not be impossible for Gundy to consider coming back and maybe Thomas resuming to his original duties as GM? Afterall, this is what a lot of us saw when he came here. Things really couldn't get any worse here. I mean we just couldn't go 0-82 for a whole season could we? At least one win guaranteed to Gundy or your contract money is free!
I'll never trust this' team again.

I don't know why some people are making such a big deal out of his leaving. Happens all the time. He's just a sensative dude, when it comes to something like that. He probably has a problem staying, but finds it hard to actually let go. Let the Rocket fans bash him, if they want. We should welcome him. As you said, he did' a great job for us and in fact 'he did'!

He is not getting paid. Team option on his last year and they decided not to use it.

Good observation, Pharzoeone.

Thankfully this puts to rest the ridiculous JVG conspiracy theories. They were getting tiring.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

...still think the big Camby right smash...

Yeah, I remember thinking at the time that VG looked like he really didn't like getting hit in the head. He accepted it as a job hazard and didn't, that I noticed, hold it against Camby--but he decided not to let it happen again. (IIRC, Camby thought about it for a while, then walked over to the Ferry and nearly took Ferry's head off. VG probably saved Camby's career, at least a year and some serious salary, by absorbing that punch. VG is my favorite recent Knicks coach but jumping between Camby and Ferry doesn't seem like sound coaching judgment.)

...it would not be impossible for Gundy to consider coming back...

I don't think Zeke is going to quit coaching unless Dolan wants a new coach. However, a better businessman than Dolan might assume that VG on the bench and Thomas doing more of whatever it is that GMs do will increase season ticket sales overall and try it out. Impossible with Dolan and Thomas running the shop but funny to think about.
