Watching Kidd obviously you can't say he better than Magic considering, Magic is mentioned usually in the top 5 players of all time.

Kidd obviously hasn't won any championships, but I was wondering if Magic and Kidd switched places and teams would Kidd been mentioned in the same breathe? The Lakers teams of the 80s were tailor made for a pg like Kidd and the best player he has played with is vince carter, compared to two hall of famers and all time greats.

Magic Career Numbers (13 seasons) 6'9
19.5pts 11.2pts 7.2rbs Steals: 1724 Blks: Blks: 374 TO: 3,506

Notable Teamates: Kareem, Worthy

Jason Kidd (12 seasons) 6'4
14.5pts 9.2ass 6.7rbs Steals: 1,902 Blks: 286 TO: 3,011

Notable Teamates: Vince Carter, Keynon Martin, McDyess

I think its a little closer than some would think, especially when you factor in defense.

It ain't close.
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

Dude Magic was on another planet and you also have to consider his career was cut short by about 3yrs.

When a player can come to a team his rookie yr and play center in a close out Playoff Finals Game and put up 42pts, 15reb, 7ast, and 3stls he's second to none.

It's not close, but interesting question as to what kind of success Kidd would have had in Magic's place.

Kidd would have better success than he does today with Magic's teams without a doubt. But in terms of comparing players, not even close. Kidd is one of those guys that is so good that he can dominate a game being what he is, a PG. Magic could dominate the game being whatever the team needed. A PG, SG, SF, PF, C, Passer, scorer, dominant rebounder in traffic, post up player, penetrator. If the team was in a slump he could take over the game offensively as well as any of the great scorers of all-time. There is a reason Magic is considered one of the top players of all time. He was!

Agree that Magic is the better player, but if you give Kidd the weapons Magic had around him, and those 5 extra inches I think the debate is a little closer.

Kidd would have average an extra 3assist and 2rbs. And I am willing to bet win at least 3 championships

You could switch a lot of players around and put them on other teams and they would have more or less success. Taht's a given. But Kidd is not Magic.

You could say this given any scenario

i dont think it would be that close - kidd has never been the sharp shooter magic was. kidd has good streaks, but magic dominated. remember when kareem busted his ankle in the finals and magic played center....here's an excerpt on the moment. look at magic's #'s. no way kidd gets those (as a rookie no less).

In Johnson's first season the Lakers won 60 games, and they lost only 4 of 16 postseason contests en route to the 1980 NBA Championship. In a moment that would link the two superstars forever, Johnson jumped center for the injured Abdul-Jabbar in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Philadelphia 76ers. Abdul-Jabbar had severely sprained his ankle in Game 5 after scoring 40 points to help the Lakers take the series lead. The 33-year-old center couldn't play in Game 6, so the 20-year-old rookie took Jabbar's position and went on to tally 42 points, 15 rebounds, and 7 assists, leading the Lakers to a 123-107 victory and the championship. For the season, Abdul-Jabbar (24.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg) further cemented his place in history by winning a record sixth MVP Award.

he's not even close. but he's still one of the top PGs of all time. it just tells you how far and away Magic is compared to the rest.

One thing to consider in the equation. Kidd is a better defensive player than Magic was.

The biggest difference between the two is that Magic has won championships, Kidd has not.

Magic was on another level PERIOD. I remember how that guy played against the BEST competition and was up to the task more often than not. Magic is part of the NBA Mount Rushmore for a reason. Whatever his team needed he could provide. I like Kidd and he's an elite player, but the intangible things about Magic outweigh the closeness of their numbers.

Magic was better than Kidd at everything except defense. Kidd is a great player, but he has always been an average scorer/shooter whereas Magic could drop 40 on you whenever he wanted. Simply put, Magic was just on higher level than Kidd.

Actually Magic's immune system may be better, all things considered.

Physically there is no comparison. Magic was much taller and very unique for a big man to be able to dribble the ball and pass the way he did. There is one more very important thing. The Lakers of the 1980's were the best fast break team of all-time. Magic Johnson was 'MADE' for this team to accomplish that feat. He was harder to block, had a 'baby hook' next to Kareems monster sky hook shot and you had to be 100% allert, because you never, never knew when the ball was coming your way. It was exciting to watch! Still my favorite team. You just had to admire them. that team would have destroyed the bulls in they're hey'day!
I'll never trust this' team again.

1) Giving any player 5 extra inches in a debate is silly. Just doesn't make sense at all. Give magic another 5 as well and he might have blocked another 1000 shots!! What then! Keep both sides of the equation equal.

2) Magic was NOT a good shooter.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

Umm - defense is a BIG part of the game. I wouldn't take Jason over Magic. But I wouldn't be so quick to discount how important that one thing is - and magic COULD NOT drop forty anytime he wanted.
