Riley: Offseason focus on point guard

By Ira Winderman
South Florida Sun-Sentinel

May 2, 2007

Even before meeting with his players Tuesday, Heat coach Pat Riley, in his dual role as team president, had established a clear-cut offseason priority.

"Right now, we probably, more than anything, need point-guard help," he said.

It is a focus that outweighs the impending free agency of forwards James Posey and Jason Kapono.

"I have to keep my options open," Riley said.

After spending a season defending his rotation of Jason Williams, Gary Payton and Chris Quinn, Riley acknowledged the public face was not always the private approach.

Riley said the Heat spent the middle of the season looking to bolster itself at point guard.

"We thought very hard about it," he said.

In mid-February, the Heat thought it had its answer, a trading-deadline deal with Dallas for Anthony Johnson, a capable scorer who could have helped offset some of the team's all-too-common scoring droughts.

"We worked very hard to try to spring something loose in a trade," he said. "The guy that went to Atlanta, they wanted a first-round pick from us."

The Heat was unwilling to budge on what turned out to be the 20th overall selection.

Instead, the Mavericks sent Johnson to the Hawks for a second-round pick that turned out to be No. 34.

Riley passed on lesser options such as Jeff McInnis and Jason Hart.

In the end, that left him with Williams limping to the finish with a foot injury that limited the 31-year-old to 7-of-28 shooting in the playoffs. Knee, quadriceps and abdominal ailments robbed the playmaker of a quarter of the regular season.

Beyond that, Achilles, calf and abdominal ailments left Payton a shell of himself, with the 38-year-old guard limited to 32 total minutes in the four-game playoff ouster to the Bulls.

And once Dwyane Wade went down at midseason with a dislocated shoulder, it robbed the Heat of the fallback option it had relied on during its 2006 championship run.

"I really like Chris Quinn and I didn't think Dwyane was going to get hurt," Riley said. "Gary was fine until his injuries. I really had four options there."

The irony of the renewed focus is the team is in the same position that led to Williams' arrival during the roster overhaul in the 2005 offseason.

According to owner Micky Arison, the team decided at the end of 2004-05 that it was not financially advisable to meet the free-agent demands of Damon Jones and Keyon Dooling. So Jones was allowed to depart to Cleveland for a four-year, $16 million package and Dooling was lost to Orlando for a three-year, $10 million deal.

But now, with Payton on the verge of retirement, Williams entering the final year of his contract and Wade hardly up to full-time ball-handling responsibilities, there again is the issue of finding the right distributor for Wade and Shaquille O'Neal.

The options in free agency, especially in a Heat price range that effectively rules out the likes of Chauncey Billups, are limited to second-tier types such as Chucky Atkins, Steve Blake and Smush Parker.

The trade market could present Earl Watson, Luke Ridnour, Sebastian Telfair, Brevin Knight or possibly Dooling, who has the right to opt out of the final year on his Magic contract.

The draft hardly would appear to be Riley's first choice for such a significant position and the options in the Heat's No. 20 range are limited to scoring types such as Texas A&M's Acie Law and Oregon's Aaron Brooks.

The other option would be converting Williams' $8.9 million expiring deal into a veteran point guard with a lengthier contract such as Atlanta's Speedy Claxton, Indiana's Jamaal Tinsley, New York's Stephon Marbury, Philadelphia's Andre Miller, Phoenix's Marcus Banks, Sacramento's Mike Bibby or Minnesota's Mike James or Marko Jaric. Beyond Miller or Bibby, none of those other options appears particularly palatable.

No matter the approach, expect a proactive focus at point guard after the hard lessons learned this past season.

"I thought," Riley said, "I was covered enough."

I would definitely do it. Or Francis.

J-Will (expiring deal) and Kapono in a sign and trade for Marbury or Francis and Nate.

Or J-Will, Doleac and cash, #20 pick or Dorell Wright for Francis/Marbs and Nate.

Sure, after the "success" of Marbury and Francis, and Marbury's phenomenal feel for finding Eddy in the post, how could Riley not want to pair the aged, worn and surly Marbury with Wade and Shaq? And cheap too, only 40M.

sign me up!

I'm wondering if Dolan doesn't give Isiah a similar mandate he must have given Sather- go with youth, cut expenses.

Marbury's value will probably never be higher and Riley & Heat could be sold on the fact that if Marbury tried this hard on a loosing team, he'll be as effective on a squad where he isn't asked to do as much.

This is what a smart GM would do- look at the teams that are out there and in the market for help- and sell to their needs.

But, we don't have a smart brain trust...

40mil is not easy to swallow for the heat.

Marbury is not worth that, or even close.

Jwill is cooked.

Can't trade AnuchaBury before the trail.

Every team steph has left has got better. "THE CURSE OF MINNY" LOOMS LARGE
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

I don't see how we're gonna be able to trade Steph until he's in his final year. He's just making too much money. We can look to play Mardy more next year and I think that will really help our situation. Steph's age and contract make it a LOCK that he's gonna be here until the final year of his contract.

In theory someone should want for no other reason than because one day he'll be a "valuable expiring contract" they can waive before they use.

Ah, if only there were more GMs like Isiah.

Yeah this is the part that people tend to overlook. He was only replaced by 2 of the BEST PG's in the league, but that had little to do with the success those teams had. Not to mention that those teams also made some changes and added players. NO the only difference is the fact that Steph was now gone. So we should jump to Title contenders without him.

That's true, 'luva. But what you neglect is the fact that the Wolves got better with Brandon, and that the Nets and Suns improved in attitude and chemistry immediately and concluded they had already reached an insufficiently low ceiling with Marbury. Show me where a Marbury team remotely exceeded the sum of it's parts for more than a month or two at a time? You don't need HOFers to do that, nor do you need everyone healthy.

If Francis could actually play the pg position effectively, he would be a good additional scorer for the Heat. But he would cost $5 mil more than Williams, is having injury problems of his own, and seems incapable of running a team at a high level. The Heat would wait us out and hope that we waive Francis before they would ever trade for him.

Marbury is not going anywhere because IT wants him here and even if he didn't, I don't think the Heat would take on his $20 million salary. I think Marbury could help the heat and would be an upgrade over williams and payton, but I don't see it happening.

The only package that works financially is:

Marbury
for
Williams, Walker and Haslem.

Williams is an expiring, Haslem maxes out at $7.1 in 2009-10... but Walker will be making close to $11 million in 2010-11. No thank you. I'd rather keep Marbury than take on that albatross.

The Heat's payroll is a complete mess. They have nine players under contract for next season and are about $20 mil over the cap. If they didn't have Wade, they'd be worse off than the Knicks. But hey, at least they won a championship.

One could only hope the Heat or the Mavs(if they lose) will take Marbury. I can not wait for the day that Marbury is gone, it will be a true breathe of fresh air that runs through the Garden. Until then this team has a ceiling and that ceiling isn't very high.

Actually, according to realgm trade checker, Marbury for Williams and Walker should work. White Chocolate is an expiring contract but Walker's contract is another albatross. Marbury only has 1 more year in his contract so this would be a good trade for the Heat. I would need more than Williams and Walker to make this trade. Add in their 1st rd pick this year which is the 20th pick then we can talk.

How about this 3 way trade?

NY Sends : Marbury, Jeffries
NY Receives : J. Williams, K. Martin, Miami 2007 1st RD pick(20), Den 2008 2nd RD pick

MIA Sends : J. Williams, A. Walker, 2007 1st RD Pick
MIA Receives: Marbury

DEN Sends : K. Martin, 2008 2nd RD Pick
DEN Receives: J. Jeffries, A. Walker

WIN, WIN, WIN all around in my humble opinion.

I'd do it, assuming the Knicks can draft someone like Acie Law... I think it's fair from all sides.

Wait- if we're taking on Kenyon, then we need to be getting a bit more in terms of picks- like 2-3 - conditional are fine based on how much kenyon plays-

Marbs to Miami would be crazy. Francis is the bum that needs to be traded though. Francis came on mega strong the last few games the knicks had. He was showcasing himself so hopefully some team takes him.

Anyway, FUCK MIAMI!!! How quickly we forget! They are the enemy, remember!

YEAH it works and Walker has a TEAM OPTION in 2008-09. We'd only suffer for one year and then the team exercises the option and peace out.

NIX...you really are a MARBURY fan. The fact that we can expedite getting waaay under the cap sooner is every real Knicks fan dream. While I agree its unlikely under Zeke, its the right thing to do if it could be done. And I am sure it does not mean that Mardy is gonna get all of this PT. Zeke wants to win NOW and so do many Knicks fans...that is why getting Marbury and/or Francis off the books by 08-09 will allow for a major acquisition a year sooner than later. And its before Curry, Jamals and Q's options kicks in.

If you are a REAL KNICKS FAN, you'd want a trade like this to happen...EDDY CURRY MAY ONLY BE BRUISED AND NEVER BROKEN...unfortunately, Marbury is both at this stage.

Give an already strong team a star in Marbury for the one hit wonder Jason Williams... ummm no thanks. I will pass on that one. I dont like the idea of a healthy Dwayne Wade, a Shaquille Oneal looking for revenge on the league and a Marbury looking for revenge on us!
