Barbosa Named Sixth Man Of The Year
23rd April, 2007 - 2:16 pm
Press Release -

Leandro Barbosa of the Phoenix Suns has been named the winner of the 2006-07 NBA Sixth Man Award, honoring the league’s top player in a reserve role, the NBA announced today.

Barbosa received 578 out of a possible 635 points, including 101 of a possible 127 first-place votes, from a panel of 127 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada. Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs finished second with 269 points and Jerry Stackhouse of the Dallas Mavericks placed third with 210 points.

The fourth year guard from Brazil becomes the fourth Suns player to win NBA Sixth Man honors, joining Eddie Johnson (1988-89), Danny Manning (1997-98) and Rodney Rogers (1999-00). Since the award’s inception in 1982-83, the Boston Celtics are the only other franchise to have had a winner on even three separate occasions – Kevin McHale (1983-84 and 1984-85) and Bill Walton (1985-86). LOL @ Manu Ginobli being second because Pop did the same thing ISAYUGH was trying to do with Lee. Kenny Smith later in the yr went on to expose that situation. Kenny said "You can't really be considered a 6th man if you come in well before the 6:00min mark and never come out of the first qrt. Who are you fooling, those guys are starters posing as sixth men". I was like you tell em Kenny

Anyway Barbosa would have won either way no matter if Lee stayed healthy.

Awwww too bad. Isiah doesn't get the credit that he was desperately looking for.

...as if Lee was in any type of serious contention anyway. please. the only people who were giving him credibility for 6th man were isiah lovers.

dLee is a nice player, but complimentary at best. i think renaldo showed that he too can bee dlee if given the minutes (by no-way is this an endorsement of renaldo as the next rodman). just two role players learning to play their roles....

Lee not mentioned in top 3? I guess you have to be a good team for sixth man honors. What a shock.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I'm sure we'll be seeing Isiah in a ski mask on the news very soon.

I don't know where Jim got that from. I'm surely not an Isiah lover and I thought D Lee was the 6th man of the year before injury. None of these other guys can give double doubles off the bench and change games with the consistency Lee did.

bonn - let me clarify b/c you actually stated a question. i dont mean the lovers on this board. i meant the mainstream media. everyone had barbosa, manu and ben gordon as the candidates - with barbosa being the clear favorite to win. where in the nat'l media was lee ever seriously considered as 6th man material? from the tnt group, to the abc group, to the nba tv group, etc etc etc. - nowhere was he among the top 3 - he was more like an honorable mention...the comments were more like "yeah, dlee is emerging as a good ball player, he'll be someone to watch in a few years." not, let's give him the 6th man of the year.

the BIGGEST difference is that he is on a losing team. the other guys are still playing - dlee is still being misdiagnosed.

A ski mask with the mouth cut out so Isiah can still dazzle people with his smile.

When that fails, Isiah goes South Side of Chicago on them.

Oh I didn't know that was what you meant. I definitely remember the announcers at all-star weekend saying they thought Lee was the leading candidate for the award though.

I know I really hated that Ginobili was in contention for the award, he's a starter who comes off the bench, which is exactly how Mike Miller won the award in Memphis, Mike Fratello stuck him on the bench half way through the season and he ended up being Sixth Man. Barbosa is overrated IMO, and Lee (4th in voting) wasn't going to get it. Stackhouse should have gotten it, and I really felt he should have gotten it last year also. Ben Gordon is always up there also.

EDIT: I also forgot about McDyess. another guy who was very deserving last year/this year.

Its real simple... they play on the 3 best teams in the league.

Its legit to bring in Lee after 5 Minutes. You are giving him an advantage over the guy he's playing against because he's rested and matching him against a sub for part of the time when the other team's sub rests. I don't buy the conspiracy, it makes sense not to start a horrible defensive front line if you don't have to.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)
