Dolan ponders bringing West to Knicks

When The Logo is available and you run one of the premier franchises in the league, you start thinking.

Madison Square Garden chairman James Dolan told WFAN radio in New York on Tuesday that he would consider bringing Jerry West aboard if Knicks coach Isiah Thomas requested him.

"If he thought that Jerry could help him, and Jerry was willing to go and they could work it out, I'd be prime for this," Dolan told WFAN. "But I think that's highly speculative."

On Tuesday, West announced that he will step down as Grizzlies director of basketball operations July 1.

Dolan signed Thomas, who is coach and president, to a contract extension March 11, but the Knicks have tumbled since then and will not make the playoffs. They should be in line for a lottery pick, but they must swap picks with the Bulls as part of the Eddy Curry deal.

Even though Dolan has tremendous respect for West, he said he wouldn't "say to Isiah, 'Hey, Isiah, Jerry's coming in and you've got to take it.' No, I would never do that."

Dolan was asked why.

"Because I made a commitment to Isiah," Dolan told the station. "And I made a commitment that the whole team feels, and a commitment to a strategy. And when you make a commitment, a commitment's a commitment."

too proud to admit a mistake? Its like you take a wrong turn somewhere and rather than turn back, you press forward.

At some point, you have to fish or cut bait.

oh man that'd be so great if we brought in west.
DLee is the best thing to happen to NY in Isiah's 4 year tenure. And that alone, though a positive on the radar, is sad as hell.

It would be great if he can bring Kobe and the younger Shaq with him.

isiah does not play well with others.

logo to ny has no chance of happening. he has grunwald. dolan said as much. no more front office hires for isiah and i don't think he wants any more help either.

DJ. I think West would be an advisory role ala Willis Reed. I think West GM days are over. The man is 69 years old.

Got a better chance of West being signed to play the 2 than as being Isiahs boss.

Dolan is saying its not his decision but Isiahs. Owner Deflects to his extended President/Coach.

This was the time Dolan says "I know this seems a bit out of tune given the teams record the last month, but we have a team still in transition and Isiah is doing a good job given the directive I have given him, its my team and my decision to maintain continuity with the direction of the team"! "If Isiah really wants West, then we'd discuss such a thing!" "Jerry, "The LOGO" has had great success against the knicks in our history and has had a great career on and off the court!

Dolan, Nalod is for hire!

why would isiah want another advisor of his clout? do you realize what the media will do if jerry west is here, regardless of his role? he will be viewed as the guy that's calling the shots, not isiah and isiah will not want that.

Isiah doesn't want people smarter than him helping the organization there is zero chance of it happening, this franchise is the biggest disgrace in sports you have two of the best execs in the game in back to back season and we pass on both and give this mother****er a four year extension after he nearly lost 50 games three seasons in a row and really hasn't improved the knicks enough to be a playoff team in his fifth year while costing the team hundreds of millions

Like someone else said, the only way West comes in is as an advisor. IT is head strong but he also realizes that if the Knicks win, he is going to look good regardless of whether West comes in. I doubt it would happen though. IT would have to really repect West's opinion to bring him in.

Well the knicks will never win under isiah, however the bulls will become the nbas next great dynasty thanks to the knicks and Isiah.

Why not evaluate the real problem here, Isiah traded with the bulls twice in two years and took away their two worst defensive players, gave them cap relief with Jerome Williams and 4 picks, two lotteries which rebuilt their frontcourt. And the Knicks have had back three season under 33 games thanks to the baby bulls

i think this is a good point.

we "seem" to win all the talent portion of deals but none of these trades have really helped this team yet. the only real trade that did have an initial burst was the marbury deal in 03. got 2 extra home games out of that but every deal since then, nothing tangible to show for it. meanwhile all those other teams got EXACTLY what they needed out of the deals and have improved while we continue to flounder.

so, can anybody honestly say that any trade isiah has made has worked out for us yet?

Nazr for Malik/Lee/Mardy could be OK. AD for Penny/Balkman since we were over the cap anyway?

The Nazr trade was still a bad trade because it was for picks 29 and 30, those are picks you can purchase. I like what we go there obviously but still.

And I love Balkman, but your paying 15 million dollars for the 20th pick in the draft, if your evaluating it on a dollars and sense standpoint its not all that intelligent. Just like taking on Qs deal for the 21st pick, he puts a premium on building through the draft but has no problem giving picks away.

Look at the Marbury trade where did it get us, other than a courtesy ticket price hike for getting embarrased in the playoffs with a record under .500.

And here we are in 3 1/2 years of steph no franchise player, caped out, little chance to really turn into a contender, surrendering another pick to a conference rival that is already better at every position, practically and improving them....

Isiah helped put three teams in the conference in the playoffs unreal
