MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Jerry West will leave as the Memphis Grizzlies' director of basketball operations July 1, ending a five-year stint with the former expansion franchise.

West, one of the NBA's great players and executives with the Los Angeles Lakers, disclosed his plans during a meeting Tuesday with reporters.

The Grizzlies (21-60) have the worst record in the league and their troubles on the court have been compounded by the possible sale of the club.

west would never want to come here.

the situation calls for at least 3-5 years to fix up. the team has no franchise player, no cap room, and only 2 #1 picks over the next 4 years. not an ideal situation for a 68 year old gm.

no excuse for the grizzlies. jerry west pretty much said they were moving to the future when they traded battier for gay on draft night. they knew gasol was going to be out for a few months and they fired their coach. those are all signs pointing towards a tank job for the 2007 draft. they played nothing but kids all year long and the name of their head coach is tone barone.

they accomplished EXACTLY what they wanted to this season before a sale of a team. dump salary. acquire young players and hopefully get a top lotto pick.

so for them, it's mission accomplished.

I'm going to hope and I'm going to pray that Isiah has some shred of sense and says Jerry West should come here to take over his duties as GM or as President, whatever. Jerry West needs some input in our situation, some shape or form.

dont think that would ever happen. isiah and he could not coexist. it would be the reverse of LB and IT last year. west would want to get rid of all the people zeek brought in and that would make the coach look like a moron. isiah operates on pride, and pride alone. that is his main fault. it must be some insecurity thing that started when he was kicked out of his first sandbox.

I'm kinda of shocked that West wasn't able to make the Grizz an elite team with all the flexability he started out with.

West fumbled a few drafts which really was the difference.

To be fair though West also never put the franchise in any holes or anything either. And put up some very good winning seasons.

Now look for him to sign with the team that drafts Oden or Durant.

Jerry West will be 69 next month. I expect he'll enjoy retirement.

Bring West to the Knicks for what?

The game has passed Jerry West by.

See ya.

chucky atkins, mike miller are not exactly kids, but miller is a young vet. So they played Warrick and gay, I would not exactly call that a roster of kids, but anyway, they stunk to hell when gasol returned also.. Mission accomplished? To play like trash. The bobcats are a younger team, suffered injuries, has a low payroll and they were a load better. I love how you make excuses for the grizzlies.... You would do great in their PR dept...

Grizz use to be in Vancouver, even franchise didn't want to play with them and all his issues.

Jerry West just saw the writing on the wall and gasol in the west as a franchise player wasn't good enough. 69 yrs of age is not a time to start looking for another franchise player to come along.

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

the Grizzlies were the most pathetic team in the NBA this year... if they get a Oden or Durant w/their lottery pick, i'd be happy if i were a Griz fan, but to say they accomplished their mission, i don't know if any owner goes into a season hoping to tank the season from the get go.

New York Post -
On Wednesday, Isiah Thomas said he has no interest in bringing in another "basketball mind" such as Jerry West. Thomas said he needs "a basketball player."

Does ISAYUGH consider himself a basketball mind?

I think Isiah is starting to get it, except he needs more than one "basketball player".

TrueBlue - do you consider Isiah Thomas a basketball mind?

or would you offer that you know more about the game than he does?
