Thomas was in Toronto at that time. It took me a while because I looked at it from a Knicks perspective, too.

I looked at it from a Raptor point. He stepped down as GM during the 96-97 season. He operated solely as president. He completely left the organization in the fall of 1997.

LOL Thomas wasn't the GM who traded away Stoudamire Son

1997-98

All optimism evaporated when the team was hit by numerous injuries in early 1997-1998 season. Although Thomas was a Hall of Fame point guard and skilled evaluator of talent (as evidenced by his selections of Damon Stoudamire, Marcus Camby and Tracy McGrady), his failed ownership bid for the Raptors led to his resignation. Glen Grunwald, a lawyer and former All-American basketball player was then hired as the Raptors' General Manager. With the exit of his mentor, Stoudamire immediately sought a trade and on February 13, 1998, Toronto's first "franchise player" was shipped to Portland along with Walt Williams and Carlos Rogers for Kenny Anderson, Alvin Williams, Gary Trent, two first-round draft choices, a second-round draft choice and cash. Kenny Anderson refused to report to Toronto and was subsequently traded to the Boston Celtics on February 18, 1998 with Zan Tabak and Popeye Jones for Chauncey Billups, Dee Brown, Roy Rogers and John Thomas.


Thomas was still acting as GM and President at least until the 17th game of the 1997-1998 season which would have been somewhere around December

1997/98: After 2 seasons of optimism things fell apart for the Raptors. The troubles started early in the season with a slew of injuries to Popeye Jones, Marcus Camby, Carlos Rogers, Walt Williams and Zan Tabak, which led to an early 17-game losing streak, which buried the Raptors in the first part of the season. The struggles as well as an ownership change led Executive Vice President Isaiah Thomas, whom many considered the heart and soul of the organization, to severe his ties with the team. As the season wore on the Raptors even severed ties with their young budding star Damon Stoudamire as they traded him to the Portland Trailblazers along with Walt Williams and Carlos Rogers for Kenny Anderson, Gary Trent, Alvin Williams, a couple picks and cash, after Stoudamire indicated he would not re-sign following the season. The Raptors were not done trading yet, as they sent Anderson, Popeye Jones and Zan Tabak to the Boston Celtics for rookie Chauncey Billups, Dee Brown, Roy Rogers and John Thomas. With all the tumultuous changes it was not surprising that the Raptors struggled finishing in last place with a horrible record of 16-66.


Once again the trade was consumated


New York Knicks as part of a three-way deal in which the Toronto Raptors received John Wallace from the Knicks, and the Blazers received a 1998 lottery-protected first-round draft pick from the Knicks and a future second-round draft pick from the Raptors on 10/10/97


That's before the 1997-1998 season got underway and ISAYUGH was still calling the shots.

I stand corrected and apologize for the jackass reference. It was I who was the jackass. I always remembered Thomas saying the stress of Stoudamire and Camby infighting led him to leave. I thought it was 97. I never gave him credit for the John Wallace trade for Dunley. Change alot of perspective that I have about Thomas too.
