I think Andrew raises a good point and I don't think religion is the best reasoning to argue against freedom of speech. We've seen where that can lead around the world.
But Mck does raise a very valid point that the regulation of speech may become more and more necessary - despite the potential of governmental abuse. With the incompetence of our current adminstration, its easy to champion freedom of speech of all forms. And if you accept the assumption that "good" ideas always endure in a "survival of the fittest" manner, then thats reasonable. But, empirically, I think we can say with confidence that its not always the "good" ideas that survive as the proponents of factions may believe - the majority is frequently likely to trample the minority for trivial gain.
From a medical standpoint, I can say with certainty that there a lot of impressionable people walking around. About 20% of all people reach an adult level of abstract thinking. So its easy to see that the introduction of poisonous ideas into the mainstream can affect the behavior of a huge population. I'm not idealistic enough to believe that prejudicial stereotypes will selectively die out - so I think, at some point, we may have to look to alternative solutions. Obviously, going in that direction is also difficult and opens the door for another set of violations.
