The debate has usually been between Williams and Balkman because we never really saw Collins play. Now that we have seen him play a few games, which one is the better player?

IMO, as a pure passer, I think Williams is better. But Collins is a better defender, shot-blocker, rebounder, and he can pass better than most of our other guards. He looks to have improved his shooting and is a fairly heady player. I think both players have leadership qualities.

It is probably far too early to make any real assessment because both players have played so little, but I think that it is quite possible that in two years, we will be saying that IT took the better PG in Collins.

Talent wise, Williams is the obvious choice, but the question is, will he be a winner. Seems to be a score first type PG, which has generally proven to not be so successful. Could he wind up being the next Stephon Marbury (minus the recent improvement this season)?
All we have in the backcourt are score first guards. Collins was definately the better pick for THIS team - but when you're trying to rebuild (and I say that term loosely) - you have to take the BPA.

I bet the Nets wish they had a defensive specialist large and steady backup PG right about now...

i'm sorry, but are we really starting a thread about mardy collins after 5 games of action?

if that's the case, then frank williams was a 10X better pg than marbury, b/c he was 3-0 as a starter. dude didn't lose.

true, but you really can't equate college to the NBA. Marcus was part of a winning college team right? So case closed?

My comment on the college career was simply meant to point out that we have more than five games to look at Mardy. We also had the summer league play. Winning at college does not mean alot when you consider that Williams had NBA-talent playing with him at UConn, and I certainly have not suggested that Williams is not a winner. My post simply asked who did people think might turn into a better PG prospect.

Williams is obviously the more diversely talented player, but I think that Mardy has a chance to be a much better PG that we anticipated if his jumper can continue to improve.

At least this is open to debate now. It wasn't that long ago that there was nothing good to be said about him. Just a bunch of opinions flying around, with neither camp really getting to see him play. Well now, that is starting to change. We can agree on this:
Good distributor,
Great defense,
Brings calm on the court,
Rebounds well,
Blocks the occasional shot (he is a great defender, and has great timing, deceptive)
Very below average shooter, but it's clear he can improve (good form, mostly proper mechanics)
Team/Unselfish player

For this team, it's what we need. Marcus Williams would be great, but I am just sick of one sided players. We have someone that mostly just needs to work on their shooting. Everything else is pretty good to great, I'll take that now.

I'd bet we'd have a better record if he had been brought along sooner.

I really like that mardy has the foul line baby jumper... he drives and then pulls up ala steve nash real close to the hoop.. that is deadly if he uses that as part of his usual arsonal

Mardy is not a very good spot-up shooter, but when he drives and bumps his man for the turnaround shot he is pretty effective.

Balkman = Pretty good for a #21 pick.
Collins = Pretty good for a #29 pick.

Both fill our needs.

i'm extremely pleased that mardy is revealing that he has an nba game. boy did this guy look out of his league () earlier in the season.

but i'd still much rather have williams. guy has the potential to be an absolute assist machine in this league. it would have been real interesting to have seen how he would have done at finding eddy in the post, whether he would have set frye up for better spot up j's and what he could have done out on the break with lee and balkman filling.

My only problem is why are we are only seeing Collins now!!! Instead of wasting time with Francis, Isiah should have just played Collins more and let him get use to the pace of the NBA. Thomas has his faults and paying too much respect veterans seems to be an ongoing one.

I've been impressed with Williams as an over all talent, but for what this team needs most, i'd still prefer a BIG defensive oriented guard like Mardy. Isiah has the right thought in mind. We've already seen what this team is like with a smallish scoring PG that can't really defend. We really only need for Mardy to improve just a bit, but no so much so that he gets shot happy. The fact that he looks to score LAST is very important for this team.

Mardy doesn't look to take too many chances and that's been his reputation since college. If we get a SF/SG to put out there along with him that would give us a very good size factor in the backcourt and the defense would be much better. Something like:

Mardy, Morris Almond, Balkman, Lee and Curry would be a nice lineup to see during games. When you look at Williams on the Knicks he'd also make a very effective guard, but mainly on the offensive side, which I don't think would improve us in the the way we need it most. We need a SF/SG that is deadeye, to put along with Mardy and Steph. Add what we would get from Jamal as well and I would feel good about our backcourt situation.

this debate is like when Marbury said the Knicks would never win with PGs like Childs & Ward.

Williams=Marbury, Collins=Ward.
