New York Post -
On Thursday, Isiah Thomas denied making a formal offer for the Nets' Vince Carter in recent days. However, as the Post's Fred Kerber reported yesterday, the Knicks indeed offered for Carter a package of Channing Frye, Jerome James and Malik Rose.

The Knicks did not offer Jamal Crawford, but the Nets were rebuffed when they tried to get rookie Renaldo Balkman added.

The Knicks also offered Frye and Francis for Jason Kidd.

As for contacting the Nets about Carter, it was "just due diligence," Thomas said.

"It's safe to say there's 29 other teams we made contact with," he said. "I've been pretty straight-up with you guys. I don't see anything on the horizon. We contacted 29 teams to see who was available. New Jersey was one of them.

"We did our homework," Thomas added. "I didn't make an offer." [READ]

It's not secret that I was on the fence about getting Carter but this package would have gotten rid of a TON of a cap. The dealbreaker in this trade was Renaldo Balkman? Renaldo Balkman? RENALDO BALKMAN? Getting rid of both Jerome and Malik would have been huge for this team, even if Carter opts out at the end of the year, this team shed a TON of payrole!!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING ISIAH!!!!!

Throw away two guys on rookie-contracts .. let them go to the NETS of all places .. and still be 30 mil over the cap next year.

PRICELESS.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

I don't believe any of this. I think the Nets asked for Lee, Thomas laughed, and that was it.

do you think it's smart to give up Frye & Balkman for a 2 month rental of Vince? i don't... you know damn well he woulda got lambasted around here if he made that deal w/o an extension signed by Vince.

The payroll benefit would've been huge for this team, but unless we also had a plan to rid ourselves of Jeffries and Craw's long deals, so we have a real shot to be under the cap I don't see the payroll thing being too big. More importantly, Vince Carter would've been a real nice piece to have on this squad. I think you take Steph, Vince, Q, Lee and Curry and it's a nice starting rotation... even though poor defense.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I glad IT did not do it. Balkman might be able to make a Lee-type of jump in production if he gets minutes next year. I would have been a good deal cap-wise, but I agree with IT, Balkman is a keeper, especially since there is a chance Carter might walk. Now if they wanted Collins, that I would have done. I think we can still get rid of Rose or JJ1's contract by packaging them with Frye this summer.

I thought it was common knowledge that Rod Thorn only makes trades when he's ripping the other team off.

Exactly, Balkman would have gone to the Nets, developed a jumpshot over the summer, and come back next season looking like Josh Howard or Gerald Wallace. No way do we give up Frye and Balkman unless Carter was signed for 2-3 more years. Losing JJ1 and Rose would have helped, but we still were going to be over the cap.

Getting under the cap is a process, not something you can do in one fell swoop. These are the kinds of deals you have to make to get under the cap. Whether any of us like it or not, this team HAS to tear it down, trade away some of our assets to get under the cap and suck for a few years.

This team isn't winning a championship in the next 4-5 years anyway, so why not do things the right way?

Also: Balkman isn't this once in a lifetime player, Isiah or some other GM can find a guy like Balkman in each and every draft.

But you would also be giving up Rose and James two contracts we can't move ever, and you could turn around and package vince to the destination of his choice or maybe even do a sign and trade

you can't count on doing a sign & trade w/Vince... he can become an unrestricted FA after this season... he can sign w/any team that's under the cap w/no compensation coming back in terms of draft picks... so if he wants to go to ORL, he'll go there & we don't get anything to show for it except for some cap space that doesn't effect our ability to sign any FA's at all for the next couple years... why do you think no other teams were willing to step up w/the necessary talent to trade for him at the deadline? no GM is dumb enough to take that type of risk giving up 2 talented young players on a 2 month rent-a-player w/o a contract extension in hand.

NJ on the other hand would get 2 of our best young players & all we'd ever hear about is how Isiah was a knucklehead for trading those guys & about having to see them succeed in a Net uniform. if getting rid of Malik & Turd would have put us under the salary cap, then i can see some of the logic there (though i still don't make that trade w/o either a signed extension from Vince or a very good chance at landing another comparable star player via free agency in the offseason)

TMS, these are types of moves that the Knicks need to make so they can actually START rebuilding.
