What exactly is the point to starting James?

"Isiah Thomas’s curious decision to make Jerome James a starter did not become any less curious Wednesday. James, starting his fifth straight game, played the first 1 minute 46 seconds. He has played 16 minutes over the last four games. Asked why James has hardly played, despite starting, Thomas said, “Depends on the matchups.” Asked why he continues to start James, given the results, Thomas said, “I like what we’re doing.”"

With all due respect to Marv, what exactly are they doing? What advantage are they gaining from having Jerome play the first couple of minutes? Isiah keeps saying "It depends on matchups" but did he not understand what the matchups were before the game and that maybe James or Curry on Harrington might not be a good one? Did something happen in the first 90 seconds of the game that made the 20 watt lightbulb in Isiah's head go off?

There has to be an ulterior motive behind this. Can anybody deny that it isn't to get Lee the 6th man of the year award so that Isiah can use it as tangible evidence to keep his jobs, the way he desperately wanted to get Curry on the All Star team for more tangible evidence to counter their subpar record.

That Isiah is putting his job status above what's good for the team should be a fireable offense.

If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

Yep

Here's some numbers to chew on Baby Boys

Are you ready for this Here We Go.......

Every since the Orlando game in which James got the starting job from ZAYU he has played a total of 31min in 5gms.

1 of the 5gms was even an Overtime Game.

If Zeke really likes the big lineup, then I will restate that Cato should be playing next to Ed. Otherwise, I don't see what reason (other than 6th man award) he has to not start Lee.

Lee needs to come off the bench in more games than he starts to be up for the award. To date:

53 games total - 17 starts, 36 off the bench

Lee needs to come off the bench for 42 games....so that means we can look for Lee to be in the starting lineup after the next 6 games.

March 2nd vs the Warriors. Mark it down.

I can see where James could help make the other teams 4 play him when he has the ball making it easy to feed Curry in the post...

However, last night seemed like the Knicks were just showing players that they wanted to get rid of rather than playing to win the game.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

i think his reasoning in starting Turd is to allow Curry to get into the flow of the game w/o collecting early fouls... James goes in, guards the other starting C for the first few minutes until Curry & the rest of the team get into the flow, & then he comes off the floor & D Lee comes in.

at least, that's the only feasible reason i could possibly think of... otherwise there really is no other logical reason why Turd would be seeing ANY minutes at the start of a game.

Balkman can't start. If he sees any meaningful minutes, he might not get "Most Improved Player" next season.

I think Bobby Jackson go the award one year when he had come off the bench in only about 25 games. That doesn't mean Lee would get it this year without a majority of games off the bench, though.

I think there is some ulterior motive to starting james, but I'd be kind of surprised if it's to get david lee the 6th man of the year award. I don't think even Isiah would stoop that low. I think he's just showcasing james. why else would he feature james on the low block like he has been?

"He's got a chance to be Sixth Man of the Year," Thomas said. "That's the position he's in. He's having excellent success in that role. It's very hard to find a niche and have success in this league, and when you find it, you don't necessarily want to tinker with it too much. He seems to be doing OK with where he's at. Accolades and awards are coming in. Can you give me credit?"

Isiah's own words, not mine. Obviously Isiah would stoop that low.

Well, I won't say that IT might not be trying to get Lee the sixth man award, and if he is, I don't really care as long as Lee is getting significant minutes, but either way, I don't think that has anything to do with starting James. James does bring interior defense and I know IT wants to trade him. However, IT should just realize that it is not going to happen. No one wants James. We need to start Cato or Frye or Lee. All three would be better options than James.

Yeah, we all know Lee should be starting. The undiscussed issue is the stupidity of Isiah playing Jerome ahead of Cato.

i agree that makes some sense... but then we force feed JJ the ball on our first few possessions on offense. if he's in there to help make curry more effective, why do we ignore eddy on O when jerome's in?

i don't get it.

i honestly think balkman in the starting lineup would do the exact same thing as jerome there, but do it a lot better. start balkman, let him go crazy for a few minutes and then bench him. better than him getting DNPs.
