From a Hoopsworld.com article

http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_20803.shtml

“And while Thomas' ardent supporters point to the team's improved win percentage and 22 victories, would it smell so sweet if it were compared to something other than the stink emanating from last season's pitiful 23-59 record. Playing devils advocate, what if Herb Williams was hired to replace Larry Brown this summer. Would the Knicks record be any worse than 22-29? Would it be better?”

another solid point:
“All too often, with the game on the line, Jamal Crawford is isolated at the top of the key, trying to break his man down. While Jamal has been remarkably clutch on many occasions, he ends up taking off-balance, low-percentage jumpers more often than not. If Eddy Curry is 'The Man', why not put the game in his hands and the responsibility on his broad shoulders.”
-------------------------------

Basically Isiah walked into a situation where as long as the Knicks didn’t completely explode – he would come out looking like a hero.

Its like if I replaced somebody at my job who got fired for sniffing coke off their keyboard. As long as I didn’t use drugs in the office – I would seem like a top-notch employee…

Herb Williams was 16-27 in 2005 after taking over for Lenny Wilkens (17-22). Herb is a terrible coach.

Herb is not a good coach.. He seems like a pushover. He might have knowledge and be good enough guy to be an assistant but he just doesent seem be to be the type of guy that you are going to fear if you play bad

there have been multiple late-game set up plays--i.e lee dunk marbury go aftre william sbucket against utah--that was set play--getting craw in position to wins games etc... IT has probably saved his own arse with good late game coaching. the problem the knicks have is they are not a smart team collectively--if anyone wants to argue this point--go look at our TO margin. we SHOULD be better than 22-29 if we LEAD the NBA in REBOUNDS! we need some different guards and a goood SF[effecient]

The point isn't so much that Herb Williams is a great coach. It is more so that anybody could win 22 games with a team as talented as the Knicks - especially in the Eastern Conference.

What has Isiah done to prove that he deserves to continue collecting a paycheck from the Knicks organization??

Is there any team in the NBA that would trade their current coach or GM for Zeke?
No way.

Why not give somebody else a chance? Isiah had his shot…

He has been terrible late game coaching, briggs are you insane.......

He had one option against charlotte throw it at the basket and somehow lee tipped the ball in, and the marbury play against utah? Isiah didn't draw it up the jazz fell asleep and the smartest player on the team saw it and threw it ahead to marbury.....

How about Isiah not using the foul to give and the Knicks almost blowing the game vs. Utah, when the exact same thing happend against the Pistons when Delfino hit the three to send it into over time......

Isiah has been terrible late in games......

Washington-Leaves us without timeout and orders a double team at the top of the key with 12 seconds left with Arenas is 4-14.....Wizards score and knicks have no timeouts, for the second straight game and blow it....

Every time the game is on the line crawford is taking a terrible shot....and most of the time he is commiting a bad turnover down the stretch....

And you know if Eddy Curry is not going to get the last shot there is no reason for him to be in during the final minute of the game. He has cost us more than a few games down the stretch with his inability to put his fat overweight ass on his man and box him out. That is also late game coaching.....

Herb Williams is not a good head coach candidate, heck we don't even know if he's a good assistant coach!! I feel a lot of assistant coaches skate by anyway. Isiah has only had a half season with a team that didn't know how to play together and for all intents and purposes, are still learning to do so. This team is going to be good in the next two years. I haven't seen a coach in any league that coaches mistake free ball either by plays called or players not executing the plays called. Would some of you be calling for another coaches head at the halfway point? Give the man the whole season and see where we stand, I only expeceted 33 to 37 wins anyway.

Good point MS

Two games in a row (at Washington and at home versus New Jersey) IT burned all his timeouts and the Knicks were forced to take a half-court heave as time expired. If Zeke had used all his time outs – there would have been plenty of time to set up a play.

Also – as you pointed out – If Eddy is not going to be utilized, put in a better rebounder. In that New Jersey game - the Knicks lost because 40-year-old Cliff Robinson tipped in the game winner over Eddy.

You need a PG in the mold of Mark Jackson to get a dominant center a buzzer beater type of shot. When Ewing was here we always had a PG that catered to him. They knew how to feed him to show his strengths. Jamal, Dinglebury, Stevie and Nate just does not know how to do this. They would rather throw the spectacular pass than feed a simple post pass to setup Curry.

Last years team was about a 30-33 win team if we had everyone healthy and in shape so i don't see why isiah gets a pass for matching that record......

And Eddy Curry only reinforced why he has been a loser his entire career, coming out and saying if Isiah goes he wants to be traded. A player that is out of shape and the worst defensive center in the league, not an All-Star either comes out and makes a declaration like that when we aren't even close to 500. This teams sense of accomplishment is absurd.....

If everyone did a better job of handling their responsibilites and working together and playing hard on defense and not being as careless maybe i would give Isiah credit........

Not to harp on things but Marcus Williams is playing great ball, Balkman is being unfairly benched, the knicks don't have a pg in the Mark Jackson mold that can deliever the ball or get people involved, and we desperatly need a pg......but isiah had to justify for ****ing the franchise with "the franchise", so we didn't need a pg at 20 but we needed one at 29

As always Isiah blew a tremendous oppurtunity because of his false sense of pride.....If you want to give Isiah credit you need to look at the amount of turnover prone idiots he has on this team, taking care of the ball is about good coaching. And I believe we are leading the league in techs this year, so Isiah gets zero credit in my book.

Don’t like piling on but…

Another thing that bothers me about Zeke – he is the king of lowering (already low) expectations.

A few examples:
-At the start of the season the Knicks had a tough schedule and from day one Isiah talked about how “hopefully we will can survive and not fall too far behind the division leaders.”

-Towards the end of December he talked about how “if we can stay within 3 or 4 games of .500 at the all-star break, hopefully we can make run in the second-half.”

Shouldn’t the Coach at least pretend to have supreme confidence in his troops and state it publicly? Why should a team with the highest payroll in the NBA and playing the worst division in sports not expect and demand to make the playoffs!?!?!

I think IT hopes the bar will be so low that Dolan will assume the Knicks have improved even if they only win 32-34 games.

On a related note – it is frustrating when he makes comments like “I am glad we didn’t have to face Shaq” when they played Miami. Or “I feel bad for the fans but I am ecstatic Kobe won’t put on a show against us” when Kobe Bean got suspended.

Zeke and Curry should hope that Shaq plays so he can show the world how Eddy Monster is the new sheriff in town.

they did trade away his starting center (nazr). and he started sweets at PF - that means wins/losses weren't that important.

I have no problem with IT saying things to try to save his job b/c I know behind closed doors, IT is not saying those same things to the players. IT is a cold-blooded competitor who is not going to back down from anyone and he is teaching these players how to have that same attitude. The comments he makes to the media are misdirection and intended more for Dolan than anyone else.

I know I posted on the topic of "If Curry was really THE MAN he would take the last shot" forum once before, and I believe someone else (either a poster or a journalist/blogger) also wrote about why Crawford tends to take the last shot versus Curry.

I guess I'll just repeat it again, but using that argument as reason to critique he as a player and Isiah as a coach is not as strong as one might be led to believe.

When it came to the Lakers, Kobe often got the last shot, and not Shaq, when Shaq was a more dominate scorer. Guys like Ewing, Olajuwon & Duncan have gotten the ball, even as big men, because they posses(ed) the ability to create their own shot from the perimeter or a specific go-to move. Shaq does have some go-to moves to some extent, but when he got the ball late defenses would collapse on him, and often foul due to his FT shooting woes.

Curry's FT shooting has been much improved as this season has gone on, which could warrant him getting the ball late, but he doesn't have a specific go-to move (in my view thus far, even though he's developing a nice baby hook), nor a good enough jumper from 10-18 feet to really justify being the primary target for the Knicks late in games. Certainly his tendency to turn the ball over also factors in, especially since defenses now use a similar approach towards him as they did Shaq.

However, that doesn't imply that Curry is not, arguably, our best player, or at least most key to winning aka "the MAN." Most teams rely on guards or guys with the ability to create their own shot, can shoot well from outside, possibly have good court vision (which are usually the best), and shown the ability to be clutch with the ball at the end. In terms of ability to shoot and create shots, as well as create for others, I wouldn't say that's not Curry's game at this point. To me, that's not a knock on him, or a reason to say he's overrated as a scorer because clearly he's showing real star-like ability on the offensive end. Crawford is still the more natural choice for end of game situations, so hence remains the status quo.

Frankly if you want to maximize Curry I go with this lineup with the last position.

Nate (or Frye), Crawford, Marbury, Q, Curry

No one is going to really double if you have four guys that can knock down a jumper in a tie game, mr. all world crossover has enough trouble as is getting inside the three point line....

Game tied i think curry can make 1 out of 2 for the win

the problem with going to a post player- curry, shaq, duncan- in end of game situations is there isn't enough time to pass out of the post, reset or pass around the perimeter to the open player on the other side.

I think most teams go with a perimeter player, top of key type play for last second shots.

As for Herb vs. Isiah- I think Isiah has done some nice things as far as plays. But I hope we can find out next year if Herb is better

One of the best ways to get a post player a chance to make the game winning shot is to run the oldest play in the history of the game. The pick and roll. The combo of Ewing and Jackson/Doc Rivers/Derek Harper/Ward/Childs and Mailman and Stockton ran this play to perfection which gave Patrick and Malone a chance to get the ball and a chance to shoot. Both these guys, Ewing and Malone, had the option to pick and roll or pop. Another player that ran this well was Duncan with Parker. Bottom line, a post player needs a PG that knows how to setup him up.

But in order for the Pick and Roll to work you need your bigman to have a good outside jump shot. Ewing, Duncan and Malone all had it. Shaq & Curry do not, hence one of the reasons they are not typically the option at the end of games.
