Knicks: Dolan tells Curry, Knicks Isiah's safe for moment
Monday, February 12, 2007
BY DAVID WALDSTEIN
Star-Ledger Staff

LOS ANGELES -- Knicks owner James Dolan has seen progress and has heard from his players, and coach Isiah Thomas appears very safe for now.

Dolan, speaking casually to the team the day before Saturday's disheartening loss to the Utah Jazz, told his players that Thomas didn't have "anything to worry about right now," according to a person in the room at the time. Then to add emphasis, he playfully tapped center Eddy Curry on the shoulder, which made everyone in the room laugh.

It was Curry who said last week that if Thomas were to be fired at the end of the season, he would look to get off of the team, declaring, "I'd be trying to get out of here."

According to the person, who did not want to be identified due to the sensitive nature of the subject, Dolan was strongly hinting to Curry and his teammates -- who almost to a man worship Thomas -- that they need not worry, although it is believed Dolan has not yet made a final decision.

But he seemed to be reinforcing the idea that, barring any unforeseen collapses or roadblocks, Thomas will be back next year, hardly a surprise to anyone on the team or to anyone watching it closely.

While the owner was not making a major announcement to the players and did not make any guarantees about Thomas' future, his tone was supportive and positive, and also a little humorous. One of the things he mentioned was the wave that fans did at Madison Square Garden during the last game against the Clippers, which he seemed to enjoy.

Dolan was out West on business and had scheduled to attend the game against the Jazz after he fell ill during the Knicks previous West Coast trip in January. Although he witnessed a deflating overtime loss in Salt Lake City, Dolan has also seen a lot more positive things in 50 games this year than he did all of last season.

While still seven games under .500 at 22-29, the Knicks have nevertheless made what most observers would call "evident progress." With one more victory the Knicks will match last season's total, and in the process they have joined the playoff hunt.

"Evident progress" and "significant progress" were the terms used by Dolan when he appointed Thomas head coach over the summer. He said that unless Thomas demonstrated those things by the end of the season, he would be gone.

He has never given a tangible definition in terms of victories or playoff seeding for "significant progress," but Dolan said we would all know it when we see it.

He surely has noted the progress made by Curry and David Lee under Thomas, which most would consider to be both evident and significant. Curry is having a breakout season, averaging 19.8 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and fulfilling his billing as a franchise player.

Lee, meanwhile, has emerged as one of the best rebounders in the NBA, averaging 11 rebounds per game, seventh in the league, while both Lee and Curry are in the top five in field-goal shooting percentage.

And Thomas has also brought Stephon Marbury, despite inconsistencies due to his sore left knee, into the fold, getting him to play within the system Thomas has smartly designed around Curry.

Of course, the Knicks are not without their flaws. Defensively they may have improved from the beginning of the season, but they still allow 101.8 points per game, 22nd in the 30-team league.

They haven't even been at .500 since they were 1-1 on Nov. 3, and if the season ended today they would be out of the playoffs. They are currently three games behind the Heat for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference with the Nets in front of them in the ninth spot, and they are five games behind the Raptors in the Atlantic Division.

But just the mere fact that they have a shot at the playoffs is a sign of significant progress, coming from the third-worst record in the entire league last year.

"It's a grind and it's a slow build," Thomas said Saturday morning. "But our future is definitely bright."

Wonderful. Us fans are worried that this team will not win a championship in our lifetime, and the owner is concerning himself with the fans doing the wave.

better than blowing it up now...I need a couple more years of this squad. utah never won a title and they keep their coach.

let's try a plan that involves more than 3 years given to a coach/gm.

Let's go Knicks. That's amare

It is a smart move IMHO. We have no cap room and won't have any for two more seasons. Who is Dolan going to bring in here that is going to do a better job as coach than IT? I cannot think of any big name out there that is going to reach these players better than IT has. So if you are going to keep him as coach, you might as well keep him as GM so that there are not any more power struggles. You give it another year or 2 and see what the team can do under IT's coaching staff. If the team does not significantly progress, you fire IT right when Francis and Marbury's deals are going to expire and hire a new GM who should then have some flexibility and tradable expiring contracts. Plus, IT is a solid drafter, so let him continue to add young players to the team. IMO it really is the only logical move to make at this point.

The success of this team is measured by fans doing the wave. This is really Pathetic.

Dolans only saying....so far, so good. Unless things just totally fall apart and this teams quits, Isiah will remain as coach which is as it should be. Dolan liking " the wave" is understandable, it means fans are having a good time and that means dollar signs to him. Knicks playing like they give a d__ is progress. Next season this should be an above 500 team.

I'll bail you guys out. On one condition: You nail Isiah right between the eyes.

Wrong and this exposes everything a supposed HATER is trying to get through STRAW HEAD like these. If you put on a Knick uniform you should always give a D***. No matter what! $100MIL Dollar Payroll 3yrs running should equate to .500 or better basketball and this team is far away from it still.

I don't care if Isiah is back as coach, although I'd rather him not, but I definitely DO NOT want him back as GM. The Isiah era has to end, it's been 4 years of crap and it's time for someone else to come in. I'll give Isiah for TRYING, but it just hasn't worked and I'd like to see someone else get a chance to right this franchise. Pay Jerry West whatever he wants and let him do his thing.

I knew the wave would come back to haunt us...

Really though, it's a sad situation whent a franchise like New York accepts losing like this. In the heydays, coaches would get fired for "underachieving" with winning records, like Don Nelson. Now we have continuous losing records, no playoff wins in 6 years, and the "future" people talk about boils down to David Lee and Eddy Curry.

Horrible, horrible management that does not care about the fans(highest ticket prices in the league for this crap product) and celebrates losing.
Thank you, Rick Brunson.

Lenny Wilkens lost his most trusted assistant for going 0-2 to start the season and then got fired for going 37-45.

This team is giddy over the coach being safe for being 7 games under .500 just before the all star break.

TYPICAL RESPONSE You guys freakin kill me.

First off let's be fair. The team had an understandibly rough start to the year, but they weathered those early days and have been much better. Yes they're mediocre, but they can change that over the last 31 games. I'd love to see this team post a couple of winning months to close the year. The trend has been that of a team that is improving in small increments.

6-11 in Nov.
7-9 in Dec.
7-8 in Jan.
2-1 in Feb. should be 3-0 :)

Part of the problem is Isiah himself. His in game coaching decisions. Playing James and not starting Lee. His crunchtime play calling and the teams crunchtime defense still need work. Still I think he's been making good progress with this team in practice and they are still unified and on goal from what I can see. This team has been playing like a just under .500 team since December. It's the DIRECTION that the team is headed that is MOST important, not the specific number of wins. That's likely what Dolan is responding to.
