New York Daily News - http://www.nydailynews.com Will Knicks lose fans to Brooklyn Nets? Friday, February 2nd, 2007 This would be a good time to look at the other pro basketball team in the area, especially since the Knicks have been so uninspiring of late. It was interesting to see that last week, after Jamal Crawford had his 52-point game, the Daily News had Jason Kidd's marital troubles on the front page, keeping Jamal and the Knicks on the back. I point this out only because the Nets have been a compelling story on and off the court this season. They have two superstars (Kidd and Vince Carter) and a third player (Richard Jefferson) who nearly is one. Kidd is one of the best point guards of his generation, and is a joy to watch when he's healthy and playing well. Granted, the Nets are getting old, so who knows how they will look in a couple of years. But they are a fascinating team to watch. And they are moving to New York in 2009. The Nets have definitely underperformed this season, but they have righted their ship a little as of late and certainly have as much chance as anyone to win the East (at least in my opinion). Any thought I had of the Knicks actually catching the Nets has dissipated. The Knicks are now four games out of first place (three games behind the Nets), and just are not good enough to stay in contention for long in the division race. Personally, while I follow the Nets casually, I would never, never, ever switch allegiances. As I have said before in this space, I have never rooted for the Nets. Don't really have a reason why, but it's just the way it is. I am not the kind of fan who would ever change who I root for. I have been a Knicks, Mets, Jets and Rangers fan since I was about 10, and I will stay that way for the rest of my life. Also, I have met many people who have switched allegiances or rooted for more than one team. That is not me. But the Nets present an interesting question. They are moving to Brooklyn in two years. They will officially be a New York team. Will that change your attitude towards them? If the Knicks continue to be bad, and the Nets continue to put an exciting product on the court, would you consider changing sides? Or would you consider rooting for both teams? It's hard for me to fathom anyone switching from the Knicks to the "New Jersey" Nets, but what about the "Brooklyn" Nets? Personally, I would never do it - but I want to know if it's something you would consider. Let me know - and please include your first name and your hometown.
Brooklyn on the Jersey! Thats blood!!!! Im from Brooklyn!
Hell NO! Once the enemy, always the enemy!
Knicks are pissing me off! Im switching!
I'll do what Bonn does!
If there is a
Im dyed in the wool Knick fan no matter what!
Dolan will buy Brooklyn and block the team from moving.
They once were the NY Nets, and they just coming home now! Go Nets!!!!

i will never root for any other franchise other than the Knicks, no matter how bad of a team we are... any fan who can easily switch alliances like that really isn't a true fan imo.

ONce upon a time the nets were a NY team with DR J winning ABA championships. In 1974 and 1976 they were the ABA best! Fun times.
They belonged to Long Island and at that time That is where I lived.

Grew up my first 11 years in Brooklyn.

IN the absence of the knicks, I will support the BROOKLYN NETS.

We have the METS and the Yanks, and before the cross league games they could only meet in a world series. I am a NY Fan, so I can support one or the other. IF I wanted to go to a game and one team was in town, the other not, we went to who was playing. IF both in town, it depended on who was playing whom.

Jets and Giants. I root for the Giants, then the Jets. Play head to head, I just enjoy the game as a fan of the game.

Knicks and Nets, I'll root for the knicks, but head to head will depend.

Lets put it this way, and listen up MR Dolan: "this team does not grab me like it used to. I don't like whats happeing and the door to my basketball heart is open to a new kid in town if they show me some love. Im sick and tired of the teams flawed construction and lack of respect you have for the fan!"

"I will always be a knick fan, but the Brooklyn Nets are going to compete with you and the way I see it your gonna lose fan base"

"Build and organization that we can be proud of again!"

Love, Nalod

I'm a Knick fan and will always be...But will show up at the Barclays Arena if the prices are cheaper and I'll see good hoops when a good team is in town...I'm indifferent when it comes to the Nets, I really don't care...If the Nets are bad and they are playing ball in my driveway, I'll draw the blinds....When the Knicks have a good team, New York is a special place for the fans...It's tough for the Nets to supplant that...But as an NBA fan I think it great for Brooklyn...More hoops is better than less hoops...

Tough choice. Too many good answers. Once an enemy, and Dolan buying Brooklyn are the best though.

die hards will never leave the Knicks. But casual fans which make up the bulk of any fan base will bolt if this organization doesn't start getting serious. Can you say Lakers/Clips

I respect Kidd and the job Thorn has done, but the better the Nets are the more I hate them.

But these days between us and them we play for yawning rights.

This year they are throwing the division away. They're starting to lose games by 20+ points. If we're a better team than Toronto the division is ours. Is it in us? Remember when Toronto was supposed to be the joke of the division?

Toronto is 11-5 in their last 16 games and getting better(7-2 in their last 9gms). The Knicks are 7-9 in their last 16gms and appear to be getting worse(3-6 in their last 9gms)IMO. Their schedule is immediately tougher. 5 or 6 more wins by Toronto in the next seven games should wrap up the division for them.

I take that back Toronto's schedule is pretty ugly coming up but they will be home for a nice little stand.

In summary the die hards will stay with their teams and the casual fan will go to whomever is consistently better, and they will have more fans. Rocket science.

Wait, wait, wait, so let me try and understand what you're saying. The casual fan might stay with his team if it's going down the tubes, but if the Nets have better cheerleaders, then goodbye without a doubt. But for the die hard fans, there's a chance that the Knicks fans will stay, but not definite, as long as the Nets don't have better luxary suites. That's what you're saying, right?

Why do we have to wait for the Nets to get to Brooklyn?
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

To be honest with you, Though NYK are not getting sellouts the way they once was,

No matter how bad Knicks are & when Nets come to Brooklyn, they can have Jay-Z, P-Z, Q-Z or S-Z

They wont draw that much better than they did in Meadowlands, even if Nets are playoff team then.

Why ?

NY and Brooklyn hoops is NY Knicks territory, then St Johns, and Fordham, Manhattan College territory.
Write it!

Throw in any other local hoops teams even if not pro', Nets used to have their following in NY Uniondale when I liked them. Dr J' Nets.

The fans in NY or Brooklyn will have folks coming to Brooklyn cause of Jay-Z and wont be Nets
fans but just for show. They may do ok.. in short term for few months, in the long term will bomb there.

Folks who like hoops rather go to Garden and watch Colleges hoops, NCAA , NIT or the Knicks. Whomever
NJ Net people were wont be going over bridge to Brooklyn to see games and support. Write that one.

Wait and see. Bad move and I like in NJ and from Brooklyn. Nets should have waited and followed
the Devils to their new site place. Its nice to have another team in NY/Brooklyn. It should not
be the Nets and I'd bet they be better moving back to Long Island where it all started.

This new place will do well for other Entertainment events, Not the NJ Nets.

Good take!

Nets good and knicks suck will hurt them big time. Knicks good and nets suck will be a drain on Nets.
