Kobe Wanted To Be A Knick?
31st January, 2007 - 10:58 am
New York Times -

When Kobe Bryant was a free agent in 2004, Isiah Thomas and the Knicks flew to Southern California armed with their mid-level exception. Despite being nearly $100 million short of what the Lakers offered, Bryant listened to their offer.

“The reason why I even was interested in taking that meeting was because of this city,” the 28-year-old Bryant said in an interview Tuesday morning. “Because I always loved this city. Always. Ever since I came here, growing up in Philadelphia, there’s always so much energy and so much buzz in this city. How passionate they are about basketball, how knowledgeable they are about basketball.”

Bryant, a nine-time All-Star, excitedly ticked off the names of the Knicks legends Walt Frazier, Willis Reed, Earl Monroe and Dave DeBusschere and said, “I just wanted to play here so bad.”

“I know what it’s like to have a team here that’s successful and how the city rallies around it,” he said. “So I was very interested. And if they had more cap flexibility, it’d definitely be a place where I would end up. I might have picked the Knicks.”

As Isiah says, nobody comes to watch the salary cap.

I wonder how many people would have come to watch Kobe?

Hmmm, "cap flexibility", where have we heard that before?

The problem with sign and trades and players who are really focused on winning a championships is that they want to play with other good players. Sign and trades usually end up sending at least one good player away.

My bad I believe I'm wrong because it applies to RFA. Could they have worked a S&T?

Do you believe him? Kobe says 'I might have picked the Knicks'. But he had more money coming his way by staying in LA with the Lakers. The clippers offered Kobe the MAX and then some but he chose to stay home.
lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

jerry west targetted the summer shaq was a free agent as the time to get under the cap. he started dumping payroll and opened up major cap space to offer him $100 mil. why did shaq leave orlando even though they offered a little more? b/c it's LA.

now, we have to do the same thing. what isiah should've recognized is that in the summer of 2007, lebron, wade and melo (even bosh) were going to become free agents. and should've planned accordingly. if we had max cap room next summer, i guarantee that one of those guys would've taken the qualifying offer and became unrestricted next summer so they could come to ny.

why go to the clips when you can play for the lakers? that's like signing with the nj nets instead of the ny knicks. marquee baby. and ny knicks are marquee. shaq or kobe would've been a knicks in 2004 if we had cap room.

but moving on, the lebron, melo, wade, bosh contingent come up again in 2010. that's what we must target for now. the dwight howard/ok4 crew is not in the cards b/c of curry (unfortunately).

it ain't about isiah not getting kobe b/c there's no way he could've. it's about the importance of cap space. that's why the title of this post is about cap space and not "we could've had kobe."

The only reason Kobe stayed with the Lakers was b/c Shaq didn't.

I agree we definitely need cap space to eventually sign a FA, but Kobe is talkning out of his a**. No way was he comming here. Leaving Orlando for a big city like L.A is much different than leaving L.A. (a team with much more tradition than the Knicks) for N.Y.

Theres a huge link between our performance the last 7 years and the salary cap. You just CAN NOT operate like the Knicks are trying to operate.

If cap space meant so much then why didn't the coveted Brian Grant sign with the Knicks after the aggressive courtship?

Of Course cap space doesn't mean anything look at all the great players that have come here already to sign with us for the midlevel.....

There was a great passage in the Knicks History book where Jordon was quoted saying I always dreamed of playing here, yea yea yea....

I will believe it when i see it. If Wade or Lebron signs for the mid level chances are we win a championship with this current team, if not we are lost
