What has happened with Jackie Butler? Are the Spurs disappointed with him? Has he shown any promise?Juan, Edinburg

To answer your questions in order: nothing; yes; and no.

What is the deal with Jackie Butler? Why isn't he getting more minutes for everyone to see what he can do? Wes, Denton

The Spurs have seen what he can do in practice, and it isn’t much.

He also didn’t help his cause last week in Chicago. Pop put him in for the final minute, the Bulls missed a shot, the rebound bounced right to him and he didn’t move a half-foot to get it. One of Chicago’s players went around him, grabbed the ball and put it back up for a layup.

I know one minute of playing time isn’t going to produce a fair assessment of someone’s skills. But that someone should at least pretend to do something.

this is actually more evidence that Larry Brown has completely lost his mind. You KNOW that Jackie Butler going to the spurs is 100% a Larry Brown phone call to his buddy Pop "Jackie is good, get him for cheap"

Pop then "ok, i trust you larry".

Pop now "what the **** happend to LB? I think his blatter must have leaked into his brain and piss got all over his thoughts and now he thinks pee pee piss"

I think the story there is that Pop isn't in love with Jackie's work ethic.

Wasn't JB supposed to be a Moses Malone clone (per summer posts on UK)?

Blah, blah, blah. He's young and played well for the Knicks last year. Period.

bottom line is that the Cato signing was much better than the Jackie B signing... yay... too bad that doesn't help us when we're down 29-3 to Miami....
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Come on man, its slightly more complicated than that. Did he really play well for the Knicks last year? He was average when given time. http://basketballreference.com/players/playerlog.htm?yr=2005&ilkid=BUTLEJA01

He did have some good games in April but nothing to make a big deal over. Maybe the Knicks saw something bad, didn't reup and SA messed up. People on this board said they would rather have Butler than Curry etc.

What I see from that, is in 11 games where played over 20 minutes (with a max of minutes being 29 and average minutes being 25) he averaged 11 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 0.9 bpg, .640 FG, .694 FT.

If 20 mins is too biased, there were 24 games where he played 15 minutes or greater (averaging 20.4 mpg in those games), he averaged 9.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 0.67 bpg, .582 FG, .772 FT.

Pretty good production when he was getting minutes.

The Spurs are idiots, Jackie Butler is the 5th best center in the NBA. We should see if they'd do Curry and the Bulls number one for Butler. Maybe we can get a steal.

I tell you, Larry Brown really knew what he was doing last season when he played Butler instead of developing Curry, Frye or Lee? Brown is a genius. We're sunk without him, I tells ya. Bring back Qyntel Woods, too!

I honestly never saw what people loved about Jackie. He seemed like a defensive seive, worse than Curry, and never was a good rebounder that I saw. He had some decent post moves, but nothing more effective than Curry or Frye and he had nowhere near the level of athleticism. I wouldn't have minded keeping him as a backup, but that's all he is. Let's not forget that he was playing for a contract and got to play in a lot of games against backups that were already over and never had to worry about having a short leash because Brown was using him as an example to prove some sort of point to Curry.

I am sure he is disappointed since joining the Spurs. We all saw that when he got minutes, he hustled and played well.

1) He was 20
2) He had good post moves for a 20 year old who didn't even play college ball (read: somewhat advanced offensive skills with upside potential)
3) He shot a really high percentage from the field and was competent from the line.
4) He rebounded well
5) He was cheap
6) He was productive when they gave him something more than sporadic minutes (see my post above...I don't even know why I bothered to do the math, because no one here pays attention to it anyway).
6) He was 6'10-6'11 260 and that doesn't grow on trees. Especially guys with qualities 1-5.
