Grizzlies Glad Fratello Is Gone
9th January, 2007 - 11:26 pm
Los Angeles Times -
The Memphis Grizzlies do not miss former head coach Mike Fratello.

"We have more freedom now," said Memphis guard Chucky Atkins before Tuesday night's game against the Lakers at FedExForum. "Everything is looser than before."

Pointing to players near him in the locker room watching videos and laughing, Atkins said, "You see how everybody around here is talking and joking. You would have never seen that before.

Doesnt the quote in bold sound like our little nate after LB was gone?

''We don't have the luxury to take anybody lightly,'' New York's Quentin Richardson said. ''We're not that good.''

He was. They're whining, because they had a tough coach. Sound familiar?

he did a good job last season... this year he wasn't getting the job done, roster issues or not... the team wasn't responding to him anymore, so it was his time to go.

It's a players league, folks. That's why coaches get canned every other week.

the league is changing.

the lb's, fratello's, jvg, and riley days are over.

riley was lucky to have shaq since shaq is old school. but before shaq, he left, and now that shaq has been out, he left. he doesn't have a player on the roster backing up his hard ass methods.

jvg is hanging on b/c dawson likes him. and they put a team around him that will respond to his coaching style.

but again, those type of players and those days are gone.

it's a players league more than ever. and the priorities now are finding a coach that will keep them happy before finding a coach that will challenge them and make them better.

without duncan, pop won't be able to coach either.

avery so far seems to have a nice balance, but that team was already built to win big time before he got handed the reigns.

Thats from NBA superstar chucky atkins, and rookie of the year nate robinson is that correct?

Alexander Johnson is going to be a stud big man and a bruiser and he was taken with a second round pick, perhaps we should have taken on 20 million in salary to draft him as well......

West had the best draft out of anyone and i love how he is trashed for not knowing what he is doing......Gay, Lowry, Johnson

That's the exact reason why you can't make big assumptions on small sample sizes.

I was just saying, everyone is all over west for not being a good gm, he trades gasol for young talent and that franchise is in terrific shape for the future.....

And everytime a coach is fired the players always say the same thing

that's also the reason why you can't use Gasol being out as an excuse for the team's failure to win games.

To be fair, Duncan is an automaton. It's not in his programming.

One of the reasons why the talent in the league has taken a hit is becasue we don't coach our players anymore.

Your right. And this goes all the way down to highschool and AAU coaches.

I coach at a prep school where parents send their kids because they know my style of coaching. The kids all know the only way they are getting into a major college is if they discipline their games. They know I'm hard on the players, but they know I'm fair. When kids leave here they all go onto play for disciplinarian's in college and all seem to overachieve. Most are great students as well. Parents/kids all come back to thank our staff for the lessons we've taught their children. I have not had one graduate in the 3 years I've been here, not return/call on a semi-regular basis. But it's because these kids volunteer for this discipline.

At the highschool level you can't do that. If you don't play someone that isn't trying or isn't listening there is somethign wrong with you. You are a "disciplinarian". It's nonsense. I couldn't take it anymore. It's no coincidence that since our staff left we haven't had one division one athlete leave that school(23 in my 7 years) and have discipline problems and guys fail off every year(one in my tenure). Players crave FAIR DISCIPLINE. It's just that Fair discipline is not allowed in today's game. Football seems to be the last sport where it is allowed. And that's why you get such crappy coaches at the high school level. The "disciplinarians"(which is such a false name) have all been run out of town, and many applaud this as somehow "keeping up with the times". As if lacking discipline is some sort of logical evolution of man. Instead our game has suffered because of it.
