From the blog of Mike Dougherty:
Quentin Richardson is back on the floor and feeling no pain.

Now, guess who’s starting for the Knicks?

Isiah Thomas is not planning a single change when they get back on the court Wednesday at Madison Square Garden against the Philadelphia 76ers, so we’re going to see Stephon Marbury, Jamal Crawford, Eddy Curry, Jared Jeffries and Channing Frye around the circle.

There’s going to be a period of evaluation before anything happens.

“You want to see how everybody’s playing, not just one player,” Thomas said after practice ended this afternoon. “This will be the first time we’ve had a significant number of players out on the floor and in the same dressing room together. We just want to see. I myself just want to see where everybody’s at before I prejudge or make anything up. I want to see as opposed to thinking about it. I want to actually see where everybody is and h how they’re playing.”

He’s not ruling out a change somewhere down the road, though.

Richardson was leading the Knicks in all of the intangible categories when the back tightened up at Indiana on Dec. 15, leaving him in a suit and tie for the last 15 games.

A lot has changed since then.

Eddy Curry is now firmly entrenched as the focal point of the offense. Jared Jeffries is healthy and learning to fit in, albeit not without some hiccups. Stephon Marbury and Jamal Crawford are surviving the heavy minutes in the backcourt and are once again developing some actual chemistry.

Richardson is OK with just playing a role.

“My job is to come here and fit in with what’s going on,” he said. “What’s going on right now is we’re playing inside-out, starting the ball with Eddy and playing like that.”

Thomas did run drills and scrimmage with a number of lineups yesterday. Richardson played shooting guard and small forward. Stephon Marbury was excused from practice for personal reasons, so the Knicks didn’t have the full rotation on hand.

it's funny that Isiah's taking this stance now when he went the opposite way when reinserting Jefferies back into the starting rotation because he didn't want to send the wrong message to the team that standing up for your teammates would end up in losing your starting job... other than D Lee, Q has been consistently our best player all year long on both ends of the floor... now he's losing his job due to injury... is that the right message to send?

i don't agree w/this at all... i think Q needs to be starting, unless the issue is his gimpy back & that Isiah still wants to evaluate him based on that... but if he's healthy enough to play games, he deserves to start imho.

Couldn't agree more, this guy is so ****ing dumb its scary, Jefferies is one guy that doesn't earn anything he is just handed his starting spot, and Isiah says i am not going to punish him by taking away his starting spot for defending his teammates??????

I must be missing something Jefferies has been terrible, hasn't improved our defense, isn't bringing anything to the table, and Isiah has been crying about outside shooting? So why not start two guys that have played like **** and brought little to the table in jefferies and frye, and our two most productive players come off the bench

I agree with you that Q should be starting. I think a line up of Curry/Lee/Q/Crawford/Marbury is ideal. But I dont think that Isiah is being Hypocritical. After all, lets not forget that at the beginning of the season JJ2 was starting. So I dont think that Q is losing his job because of injury. Regardless, he probably needs a couple games off the bench to clear off the rust anyway.

well at this point, anything isiah says now, goes in one ear and out the other.

he's going to do whatever works or whatever he thinks will work and will say whatever he wants about it. (some call it spin)

anyway, actions do speak louder than words so we'll see how it all plays out.

i have no problem if he wants to evaluate guys & play them based on merit... what i have a problem with is saying 1 thing in 1 case & doing another when the situation doesn't fit the next one... Q has earned a starting spot on this roster... our biggest needs other than shotblocking (which Jefferies doesn't really provide anyway) are perimeter defense & a consistent outside shooting threat to make teams pay for double teaming Eddy... Isiah's consistently said that Q was our best defender & the best outside shooter... so what's the problem? why does he consistently boggle our minds by not starting the 2 guys who deserve starting minutes over everyone else in D Lee & Q Rich?

Q needs to start. Hopefully Isiah will agree within a couple games.

the only thing Jefferies does better than Q is make it harder for guys to shoot over him due to his length... but Q didn't seem to have a problem giving guys like Lebron & Paul Pierce fits earlier in the season even when he was at a height disadvantage... Q's a better scorer, better shooter, better ball handler & better defender i believe than Jared... if IT's not starting D Lee right now even though he's obviously earned it, i don't have any faith in him realizing that Q deserves to start either.

I don't really give a damn who starts and doesn't. No one on this team is a hands down "start me" except Curry.

PF - Malik
SF - Jefferies
SG - Mardy
PG - Nate

I think thats it. Q is comming off of a back injury and I guess he wants to evaluate where he's at in terms of rust. Not saying I disagree with you as far as JJ2 comming off the bench, but when he returned from suspesion it wasn;t due to injury. Plus Isiah feels JJ2 is our best defender and it doesn't really matter if he's rusty or not because he isn't in the lineup for his "skill-set".

jefferies isn't even a good defender lets be honest, q rebounds better and if he were shooting hook shots from 3 he still would come closer than jefferies.....

I hope his hand is still bother him, because he can't even dunk the ball around the rim, not a good thing when the frontcourt of the future 6'11 times two can't put it down

The problem with Q is I think no matter how well he is playing his minutes will have to be limited. His back just doesn't sseem to be able to hold up.
I just hope that people will like me

Seems like he's sacrificing games to get JJ up to speed.

that's a legitimate concern... maybe the extended minutes he played earlier in the season took its toll?

seems like he's saving Q's back for later in the in the season.

I also think isiah says one thing to the media and something completely different to the team.
Let's go Knicks. That's amare

Isiah is being too protective of Jefferies. Still, I think Crawford should be the one to go to the bench for QRich - this team is better with a big front court.

Ideally the lineup should be:

Marbury
QRich
Lee
Frye
Curry

with Jefferies, Craw, Balkman and Nate coming in off the bench.
