Crawford is hot/cold on offense and plays suspect defense.

Renaldo works like a demon on defense, is a threatening 6'8, rebounds like Rodman and has the quick hops to contribute on offense down low. If he could develop a skootch of confidence in a jump shot...

what say ye?

Curry

Lee

Jeffries

Balkman

Marbury

I though he guarded the guard spot well last night. He looked like he could stay with nearly any guard you throw at him.

no.

When Marbury tries to feed the post the opposing team could double off of 3 other guys than when Curry gets the ball in the post. Nothing to spread the D.

Curry sucks at passing it out of the post and couldn't hit a cutter to save his... well, he just can't.

Maybe in spurts though.

not that bad an idea... he's probably our best perimeter defender... but maybe this would take away from his awesome rebounding

It is intriquing and I'd do it from time to time but I would not make him a full time off guard.

Only if he developed a mid range jumper and learned to shoot off the dribble. Defenively he can probably guard any poision on the floor, for a given amount of time.

no way... Balkman does not shoot the ball well... he's a SF reserve right now until he develops an offensive game.

for now, renaldo's a guy we bring in for energy and to stop a hot player on the other team.

renaldo is a 6'8 version of what jerome james thinks he is... if that makes sense. that's a good thing

I've been saying this for a while- that Balkman, if he had a decent shot, would be an awesome 2.

Heck- the way Crawford is shooting, would it be the worse thing for him to be out there? I think if Balkman just closed his eyes and threw the ball at the hoop, he might shoot better than Crawford is right now.

I would use him there at the 2 in certain circumstances where I was looking for extraordinary defense.

Frye
Lee
Jeffries
Balkman
Crawford

That is a long, quick defensive unit

In fact, the problem we had with the Utah zone was their 3 guys up front were so long & quick we couldn't penetrate or pass it in.

I've been hoping Isiah would do this. Every once in a while, Thomas likes to put out that 4 guard lineup (with Q as the PF). But the Knicks just don't have the guards to do that. The Knicks end up with 3 guards that can't work without the ball. With guards that like to penetrate you need big guys that can finish around the hoop to compliment them.

Yesterday Balkman did a good job at the 2. Sure he can't shoot, but he can defend & at the 2 - he really shut down Utah's guard (I think he blocked one of Giri's shots). We tend to look at offensive numbers in the NBA (because of the lack of defensive stats), but defense is just as important.

The league is going smaller, and the Knicks really don't have the guards to play that way. So why not buck the trend & go big? Yesterday Balkman & Lee combined for 35 boards. Cato & Balkman had 6 blocks. The Knicks have enough tweeners/centers to go big. So why not give it a try?

Shooting off the dribble is what Separates the Allan Houston's from the Steve Kerrs.

As for Balkman, of course he's gonna needs to learn to develop some type of jumpshot if he's gonna have any type of role in an offense for anyteam.

I'll grant you that Balkman needs to work on his jumpshot- but is he going to be any worse than Crawford? No, he won't have nights like crawford does where he is unconscious- but he can do better than 3 for 16 because he won't shoot as much and will drive the ball and grab boards and defend.

I would almost take Balkman over Crawford right now at the 2.

He's not a good enough shooter or ball-handler to play SG. SF is his natural position.

It's an interesting thought. One thing is clear. Balkman should be getting minutes. He's got way more potential than Jeffries.

Ira, but if you love defense as I do....

Think about a cameo shiftline with:

Lee at center, recast in the role of 6'9 Dave Cowens

Jeffries at the four, lean and mean

Frye at skill forward, spotting up as Knicks most consistent sniper

Balkman at off guard blanketing the other guys best shooter

and last but not least

the re-energized Marbury at lead guard

I do love defense misterearl and I admire your creativity and your ability to 'think outside the box', but we have to look at a player's total productivity. Jeffries doesn't board much and he's a big minus on the offensive side. I'd like to see him on the bench - until we trade him.

One question. Since you love d, why start Frye (who can't guard any forwards faster than me) at small forward over Q, who's quite good defensively.

Since you raise the point about who should start at the two, I don't think our future starter is on this team. At least I hope not. We need a two who has the size to play the bigger sg's, but who can also give us some scoring. With Curry at center, I think we need a two who scores effectively from the outside.

A. Because Frye has the sweetest jumper this side of Allan Houston, that's why my friend.

Who needs Rashard Lewis when you have number seven in a groove?
