This point has not been talked about enough... Why is it that all kinds of horrible fights can go down in other sports and no1 gives a damn but in basketball its such a big deal... I think the suspensions were a little much.. I guess its all due to the brawl in Detroit.. which was big and bad but Stern is acting like hes going to eliminate fighting.. that will NEVER happen

As long as there is contact in sports, there will be fights.. so ****in relax

i have to agree, i don't get why there's such a disparity w/how the NBA players are being held to a certain standard while other sports players aren't... & all the racism crap is BS imo, it's not that... there are black football players accused of murder or drug trafficking & illegal guns possession still playing in the NFL & are considered to be stars & the sponsors don't seem to have a problem supporting those sports, but you get an NBA player getting into a scrum at a strip club parking lot & find a gun on him, or he gets into a fight on the court, & all Hell breaks loose... it's weird.

3 of the best fighters (Brashear, Laroque, Worrel) in the NHL the last 5 years are all Black so that racism crap is lame. Its not about color. A few years back baseball bean wars and brawls were a big deal as well. Hockey and football are different because its rare that it eneds up in the stands. When that 1 idiot in Tennesse (football) stomped on a guys head he was bashed relentlessy in the media. In basketball its seems to often be on the edge of spilling in the stands. If basketball players could square off one on one like in hockey and actually knew how to fight I'd be all for it, lol. :)
The problem is they are all show and little go. They all want to throw punchs and run. Its never one on one. Its always like 8 on 8.
I love hockey fights. Hockey fights look nothing like basketaball fights. Hockey players arent afraid of taking a punch, lol. :)
I LOVED how Curry just exploded in the 4th, speaking as a fan of the Raptors, Curry looked well, scary I think is the word. Or Shaq-like Curry: 19.1ppg-7.3rpg-58%fg

I dont think you can discount the racism aspect. I definatly think thats part of it, especially in the NBA where the hiphop and playground cultures prevail.

One thing about the NBA thats different is the fans are on the court, and all those other sports dont have that. Did anyone see that woman sitting in that front row and the look on her face when Nate and JR came tumbling at her? You dont get that in Hockey or Baseball or football fights. The fans are never in danger. The Palace brawl answered the scary question of whats stopping the fans from getting into it.

How many fights that included punches thrown have happened in the NFL this year?

Proximity to the fans. Period.

I think the fines and suspensions have been a bit steep, but I also think they should suspend players for the year if they contribute to moving a fight into the stands.

I miss the days when basketball was a contact sport, but putting fans in harm's way is uncalled for under any circumstance.

It's something that people are uncomfortable talking about..but race is definitely a factor...What is a factor as well is that basketball is a huge family event..Lots of kids at the game and you really don't want to make it a place that is unsafe for them...What always gets me is that if there is an incident in the NBA then it's a reflection of the league, not the same for other sport leagues...I'm not sure why that is...I never see the NFL,MLB, or NHL commissioners making statements regarding actions of individuals...The last incident in the NBA was two years ago, but most people think this is always a problem in the NBA...

Basketball is different from those other sports in many ways. You can really see the players and their faces - they aren't wearing hats, helmets and padding, or boxing gloves. There's more of a feeling of proximity watching a basketball game, and that may contribute to people's perceptions of these fights as horrible things.

You can't really leave race out of it because of the disparity between the racial makeup of the players and the fans. Still, I don't think that's the main reason the public responds so viscerally to basketball fights. Basketball actually seems like a fairly civilized sport, even with fouls, even with hard fouls. But seeing guys punching each other and running out of control is a bit disturbing.

Another one of these debates YES WE KNOW HOCKEY, FOOTBALL, AND BASEBALL ALL HAVE FIGHTS YES WE KNOW FIGHTS RARELY HAPPEN. I AM SURE THE ONLY REASON WHY THE MEDIA IS MAKING SUCH A BIG DEAL BECAUSE THEIR RACISTS AND THINK ALL BLACK BASKETBALL PLAYERS ARE THUGS OFF THE STREETS YES YES WE KNOW! Not like this arguement has never been done before.

I would much rather to be punched than having someone spit in my face...Also because of helmets that are not as many fights...So football isnt a good thing to judge on punches thrown...

It's worse in basketball because there is no physical barrier between the field of play and fans. Fans can easily become involved in the altercation, be it on purpose (like in Detroit) or innocently (the people who Nate and J.R. landed on).
If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

But if we want to talk about images that could possibly hurt the NFL because of actions by it's players..How about 9 Bengels being arrested in the last year...Can we even count how many guys got busted for DWI...Tank Johnson's body guard got shot outside a night club last w/e...

My point is that these images is not a reflection on the sport but on the individuals...It's not the same for the NBA...
