Heat Could Pull Trigger On Deal For Veteran Guard
25th November, 2006 - 4:06 am

For the first time this season, Heat coach Pat Riley publicly acknowledged that his search for a boost to get his struggling team going might extend beyond the team's roster.

Injuries and inconsistent play have hampered the Heat through a 4-8 start. Along the way, Riley has changed his starting lineup, his strategy and, he said, his patience level with the team's sporadic play.

Next could be a roster change, possibly at point guard, where Jason Williams and Gary Payton are battling knee injuries and Dwyane Wade has, at times, been overextended while logging extensive minutes at both guard positions.

Asked before Friday's game if it might be time to consider a roster move to land a veteran point guard, Riley said: ``Probably. Yeah. I think, probably. You've gotta do your due diligence. And plus, I'm not going to make any kind of lateral move.

``It's gotta be somebody who can play. I can play Dwyane there. I'd rather have a 50 percent Dwyane as a point guard than somebody who can't play.''

Riley already has gotten a close-up look at two potential veteran point guards the Heat might consider pursuing.

Seattle Sonics reserve Earl Watson has been unhappy with his inconsistent playing time.

Memphis' Damon Stoudamire and Atlanta's Tyronn Lue might also be attractive options because both are playing on short, relatively inexpensive contracts and fit Riley's win-now, rebuild-later philosophy.

''We've got a long list,'' Riley said.

I doubt they would take Marbury. They would probably want Francis. But a Williams/Posey for Francis deal might be just what we need. Williams is a semi-pass-first point that knows how to run an offense and Posey can play although he will probably sit on the bench for us. Miami would have to have at least some interest in the deal. Francis contract is for only 2 more years, which I think is the same time Shaq's contract runs out.

Shaq ridiculed Francis' game last yr so I can't see Shaq being an advocate of Francis putting on a Heat jersey.

Dont know if Miami wants to take on Marbury's contract. If they do, I wouldn't concern myself with how JWill and Posey would fit in with this team. I look at this trade as more a salary dump.

If there is any chance that Marbury's career could be reborn, it's by playing with Shaq and Wade. I think it's worth the risk for the Heat.

Francis seems to be in team-player mode, why move him for capspace that really doesn't impact us? (at least as far as free agents)

Moving Marbury however, is addition by subtraction. He's playing like trash and imo negatively impacting what little chemistry we do have.

I think losing Steve hurts our chances of sneaking into the playoffs far greater then Stephon, that's all. And I'm not ready to fork over another pick to Chicago just yet.

I would cut Posey and Jwill. I want to see Collins get the left over Guard minutes and Balkman get the Back up Small Forward scraps.

if you get an opportunity to move marbury without taking on additional payroll or adding in picks or youth you take it. that proposed trade of jwill and posey would be ideal. and the beauty is, it's a trade that wouldn't be so hard for isiah to sell to his pal marbury: the opportunity to vie for a championship. and finally being in a position where it obviously wasn't "steph's team" might be the best thing for him. if he becomes a steph infection Riley, Shaq, Mourning, Payton, Wade, et al, would know what to do about it.

Wow! I can't believe I'm gonna say this but......I totally agree with you. Isiah and Marb are joined at the hip, but moving him to Miami to get a shot at a 'Chip' is a great sell. In fact, Isiah could say he's making the move soley to the benefit of Marb because he cares about him so much and wants him to win a 'Chip'. Its also a chance to move him out of a hostile environment.

I would only do it if they threw in a 1st round pick...
The pick would probably end up in the high teens or low twenties.

I would like our long term trading strategy to include picks and lesser talent but shorter contracts.
There are plenty of teams that are hurting that could make adequate trading partners.

Can PineBury be a new Timbug? Riles system is slowdown ball.

It could work.

You are right about that. Miami does play a half-court offense, which would probably be perfect for Marbury.

any trade involving Marbury or Francis where the Knicks get any cap relief, you have to pull the trigger on... but i doubt the Heat would do us any favors by taking them off our hands.

You're talking about taking back Walker more than likely plus maybe Posey. Which would be taking on a bad contract and another player that makes this team redundant.

Walker can at least shoot. I'd prefer to just waive Marbs at this rate though.

If that is the deal were talking about, I agree.

I would take walker and posey right now. Posey can be cut and Walker does rebound and has the tools to be very good in this offense.

If I was to deal with Miami. I demand Dorell Wright in any package for Steph.
