COLD FRYE STILL GETS HIS STARTS
By MARC BERMAN
PrintEmailEmail

November 13, 2006 -- Former Knicks coach Larry Brown spent last season trying to convince Isiah Thomas to trade Channing Frye for a veteran stud. In fact, Brown desperately wanted the Knicks to give up the farm for the Lakers' Lamar Odom.

Brown juggled Frye's role, yanking him in and out of the starting lineup. Frye's confidence seemed to get shaken as the season wore on.

It may be why Thomas is showing the patience of a monk in keeping Frye in the starting lineup despite his horrifying start to the season. Though David Lee is outplaying Frye dramatically, Thomas won't crack. His latest excuse is he doesn't want to tinker with Lee's role since he was having so much success.

But Thomas also may not want to hurt Frye's trade value. It is believed Brown's conversations with Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak - a fellow North Carolina alum - regarding Odom-for-Frye were among the unauthorized trade talks Brown held that came up during his contract dispute with the Knicks. Brown also held talks with Utah's Kevin O'Connor and the Spurs' Gregg Popovich.

*

Privately, Knicks players wish the Garden fans were less apt to boo when things go wrong and Thomas is on record saying the Garden's hostility toward the Knicks makes it less of a homecourt advantage than other arenas. The Knicks return home tonight vs. LeBron James' Cavs with an 0-2 home record.

"It's a greatest arena in the world," Malik Rose said. "We have the greatest fans in the world for a reason. But it's tough. They booed Patrick [Ewing]. They're going to boo us. But I'm calling it the way it is. It makes it tough. Are we going to respond and play better? We better because they're not going to stop booing."

*

The Knicks will hold a moment of silence tonight for the late Ed Bradley, a season-ticketholder since 1983.

It was LB who worked on that trade.
Marbury and Frye for Odom.

Give up the farm? I'm sure it included Nate because Larry didn't like Nate. It might have included Lee too.

yeah, a lineup of Curry, JJSkinny, Odom, Q, Marb is much more balanced.

That would kinda work.

from last year
Knicks Pass On Odom, Prefer Frye
12th February, 2006 - 5:07 am
New York Post -

While Isiah Thomas continues to shop Penny Hardaway's expiring contract up till the Feb. 23 trade deadline, the Knicks' president continues to protect rookie Channing Frye.

A league source who has spoken to Thomas told The Post the Knicks rejected the Lakers' overtures for Frye, even though they were willing to make 6-10 Queens product Lamar Odom available in a larger package.

Odom, 26, is averaging 13.9 points and 9.4 rebounds, but the Knicks have fears of him playing in his hometown New York, much the same way they feared Ron Artest.

Not really, Odom is great off the dribble, he can shoot the three, handle the ball and rebound with the best of them, three things Frye will never be able to do. If we can move a pg with Frye, I would do it in a heartbeat.

Pathetic!

I'll man up and say last year I said No Way to Odom for Frye. However now, hindsight is 20-20. However if we were gonna give up Frye and Steph for Odom expirings and a pick...I would havem been a bit more intrigued.

I've never liked Frye, I would have welcomed that trade in a heartbeat. Odom is a player that does EVERYTHING on the court and he would give us a solid guy to play next to Mr. No Rebound Curry.

i didn't want Odom then & i don't want him now... obviously if you could make the deal for Frye & a garbage contract, you do it in a heartbeat, but Odom's not the player who will bring this team to the next level.

One of the few things the Knicks have probably been right about is not bringing in Artest and or Odom. I just think you bring in too many problems because of the geography. If you know Ron's history you know he's got a lot of negative influences here. Odom the same. Talent wise its a no brainer.. I just think those are situations better off avoiding

Or you bring in player like crawford, curry, steph, steve all of whom don't work hard and just relax on the court half the time. Maybe if we moved frye for artest last year we would be in the playoffs.

Lamar Odom is a walking triple-double.

But his biggest fault is how maddeningly passive he is. He's way too good to never have had broken 35 in his caree and to NEVER have been to the All-Star Game.

BTW, the Lakers aren't giving him up unless they're trading for KG.

I did support this trade, though.
