Knicks Will Buy Out Contract of Rose

By THE NEW YORK TIMES
Published: October 30, 2006
Jalen Rose will be waived by the Knicks, possibly as soon as today, as the team continues its youth movement.

The team is negotiating a buyout of the final year of Rose’s contract, which calls for him to earn $16.9 million. The precise terms of the buyout are not known.

“We’re close to reaching an agreement, and my expectation is it could be done as early as tomorrow,” Arn Tellem, Rose’s agent, said last night.

Rose, 33, was became expendable after the Knicks signed small forward Jared Jeffries over the summer. They also drafted small forward Renaldo Balkman with the 20th pick.

If you can't trust your GM to make deals, you might as well fire him.

When you have so much money it's not even like money anymore, it's like points. Other than high ticket prices and cable prices what harm is there... oops I guess I just answered my own question. Yeah, it's pretty sick, but I'm glad we got Balkman...

To put it in perspective, a few picks after Balkman, Phoenix sold their 1st rounder for $3M.

I'm still of the theory that nobody else was tapping NIT star Balkman in the 20's, so I look at it as $32 M for Mardy Collins.

I thought it seemed awfully odd buying out MoT's under $10M deal, but holding on to Jalen Rose and his huge-o contract. If we were going to flip an ending deal, Mo's seemed a lot more realistic. Plus Mo plays a position where we actually could use an extra body. Buying out JRose clears up the mystery: Dolan isn't going to go that contract-flipping route anymore.

I think we are going to miss Mo. And last year we should have flipped one big ending deal at most. I was surprised then that Dolan allowed both to be turned into more salary. Isiah could have got bonus points by letting one ending deal expire. Mismanagement.

If we are truly cleaning things up, why don't we buy out or otherwise ditch Jerome now too.

Mo Taylor was waived not bought out, there's a major difference between the two.

Jalen will be bought out and then waived to become a free agent.

Same thing. Mo T was bought out.

You can't just waive a player without paying off their contract. NBA contracts are guaranteed.

Waive seems to imply you don't want the player.
Buyout sounds like a financial decision, and that you pay only a portion of the outstanding contract.
But with guaranteed contracts, waiving a player is the smae as a full buyout.

Anyway, my point was that I thought MoT could help us this year, and his contract seemed like it was better suited to use in a trade.

waive is when a played doesnt except a buyout. Mo T wasnt taking less money that his contract payed him this year, thus he was waived. It appears Jalen is willing to be paid to do nothing. My guess is he's done

I'm personally disappointed that Rose did not either figure out how to fit in with the Knicks after such a promising start with us in his first game, or that he decided to not care at all, or some combination of both.

However, that being said, islefan's point about how you might as well fire your GM if you "don't trust them" is actually not as strong as some here may like to see. I believe that there are PLENTY of GM's, if not most, who are given financial restrictions when it comes to making deals. In fact, I believe that is one of the most prevelant arguments against Isiah & Dolan from the naysayers, no? That by overpaying or trading for arguably overpaid players that it makes it THAT much harder to truly improve the team.

So, the idea that this sort of restraint coming from ownership somehow implys that he isn't "trusted" would also suggest that other GM's are also not given full trust by their owners. The Knicks case was unique in that Isiah was essentially given a blank check for 2 years to do what he wanted with the roster, where as other GM's are typically not given such leeway. Now that the results have yet to be positive he's given constraints like most other GM's, but the team happens to be WAY over the cap, so it only makes sense that guys like Rose and Taylor, if not working out as players, would be cut.

Knicks paid over $30mm for Balkman. Great job... I'm sure there was no better way to use those assets.
