Is this Mark Fidrych redux? Man this guy was about to take the place as best player in the game--a player that was unique--one of a kind --- top 10 all-time player material potential--and it looks like he wont make it out of second gear.

No one who's followed the sagas of Houston, Penny, Webber and McDyess can feel good for Amare. Seems like a guy most everyone likes to root for too.

If he's done, I guess this means Amare will be a Knick before too long...
The new new core: Randle, RJ, IQ. Maybe Mitch. Future pick. Future trade. Future FA.

Stoudemire will have cartlage transplantation - oohah style - before his career is done, mark my words.

Are you marking them?

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

Microfracture is a sure bet to destroy all explosiveness. Guys like Jason Kidd can survive it because their games aren't predicated on pure athleticism. Amare might be a serviceable player, but I agree .. he's never going to be the player he was.

Someone said that Draft was a minefield. No one could have predicted this, but Amare got Maxed starting this year!

That big money on a kid that might not make it all the way back!

In retrospect, What layden did was really not all that terrible. The top 10 picks were very risky anyway you look at it!

Hey, if Nixon could look good 30 years after the fact, so can Layden.

Right. So the good news is he's got a better chance of recovery. The bad news is at 21 he already required a risky technique typically reserved for players considerably older.

He has a better chance of recovery because of his youth, but it is unfortunate he has so much damage at such an early age, and that does not bode so well.

There is no "risk" to microfracture. If it doesn't work well, you're no worse off than before and almost certainly better. The question is whether it works well enough to let one return to high-levels of sports activity. Most athletes return diminished, but that is not the fault of micreofracture, that is the injury.

The truth is, the real measure to how well microfracture works for non-professional athletes is "Can I walk with less pain"? If the answer is yes, it worked.

Right. You and I are in agreement.

"Risky" probably wasn't the best choice of words, and I'm hardly an expert, but it's not a technique with an enormously high success rate, especially for professional athletes. The odds and success rate I'm speaking to are not of walking without pain, but of returning to the peak performances required of world-class pro athletes.

With micro-fracture you're not really trying to repair something that's broken, you're trying to stimulate a growth of cartilage that is deficient. If I'm not mistaken the technique doesn't really even stimulate the growth of cartilage itself, more like a scar tissue (of a sort) that acts like cartilage to cushion the joint.

Anyway, I don't want to get too far over my head here. My main point was that it's sobering that he should have needed this technique at his young age. Cartilage deficiencies at 21 can't be a good thing for a professional athlete. I think we all agree on that.

He got maxed right after the microfracture surgery--before he showed he could still even play in the NBA. Plain stupid.

this isn't the first time the Suns have garnished an injury prone guy with a max deal - Googs and Penny, too.

Wow, I really hope Amare can make it back, but man, it doesn't sound good.

I can just see the Knicks trading Frye for Amare. How any on the board will sign off on that.

I don't think I'd trade David Lee for him now.

There seems to be someone who gets Microfracture knee surgery every season. It was Allan a few years ago, then Kidd, then Zach Randolf and now Amare. Who's it gonna be this year fellas?

Ray Allen?
Tracy McGrady?
KEVIN GARNET?????????
Channing Frye?
