I was riding to work today and listening to radio when they did a story on Marbury's new shoe. They basically said that it was a great idea for him to sell a low cost shoe. Marbury has said that he is going to wear the shoe all year and will not receive any upfront money. NPR did an experiment where they cut the shoe in half and had an expert look at it to test its quality. They compared Marbury's $15 shoe to a pair of $95 Nike Air Jordans. The expert said that Marbury's shoe had a good grip and was well made but needed more arch support. The expert thought the Nike was a better shoe. Has anyone tried the shoes out on the court?

that's cool to know that a $15 shoe isn't EXACTLY as good as a $95...but that's not the point.

if you are expecting them to be exactly as well put together as the $100 shoe than you are in for a shocker.

Simply file this into a long line of attempts to discredit ANY thing that is related to marbury.

Enjoy the shoes and if you happen to have to play in an nba game, you should probably go with the $100 so you can avoid the class action lawsuit.

But in terms of quality...they are more than apt shoes.

these are for innercity/trailer kids that can't afford the nike's. So they don't have to spend grocery money and/or rob and steal to get a pair of nba quality shoes (like the stars have)

I understand that you just want to know if they are "quality" but maybe you should spend the $15 and see for yourself.

$15. get a grip.

if someone said they were fine, would that make you purchase them, or are you simply looking for someone to say they suck?

Wow, someone got a bit testy. I plan on buying the shoe when Steve and Barrys actually gets a pair in and I'll let everyone know how they feel on the court. I don't care if the shoe is 15 dollars though, it should still be made just as good, do you realize how much it costs to make a shoe? It's seriously pennies. They should all fit/comfort right.

If someone said they sucked, then I wouldn't buy them. If someone said they were good shoes, then I probably would...I was planning on buying them anyway. That's usually how it works when you ask someone's opinion of a product.

I recently put a pair of new $30 insoles to replace a pair of trail running shoes I have as an experiment. The shoes were rejuvinated and I did not have to replace them. THe arch support was excellent and I felt the heel felt stable again.

Shoe companies skimp on this more than anything. Nice thing is I can take it out and put it in a new shoe. These are not the ones they sell on tv as some miricle cure.

It is possible Marbury can have special models made for him that are different than the store version, but look identicle, or at the very least change out the inner sole for a better one.

Even if the shoe is the same as a $50 pair, its a good value.

Also the level of arch support needed must differ from person to person. I've put on some shoes that had too much for me. I guess as long as its adequate there should be no issue in that regard. I was never really expecting that they'd be EXACTLY like a pair of Jordan's. For one thing its a matter of choice just how much arch support there is in any shoe. It doesn't have to mean that they cut back due to price. I would guess that there is a good degree of variance from one top shoe to the next if you took several different brands and tested them. As long as they don't actually HURT your feet or fall apart then its all good.

I went to Steve & Barry's in the Manhattan Mall to buy a pair for my son and they were sold out. The salesmen said they open at 9 a.m. and the line starts forming 7 a.m.
What I was surprised to find out that Marbury is branding more than just sneakers. There is casual wear, jackets, and boots, all for very reasonable prices.
When I do go back I plan to buy a pair for myself, probably some other stuff too. My experience tells me these are hits with parents and kids.

I'm sorry if I seemed grumpy, but it felt more like "I just heard marbury's shoe lacks a component, that means they suck" statement as opposed to "Hey, has anybody gotten the shoe? How is it?"

The marbury bashing has been in full effect, from comparing him to motumbo in terms of good will, to comparing him to nash on his ability to lead a team.

Now, it gotten to the point where it seemed like an attempt to discredit a $15 shoe from being the EXACT same as a $90 shoe.

My apologies if it seemed defensive...it's been a rough off season of ignoring the good moves that have been made...I took it the wrong way.

Some are giving props (though I think the sun is a rag):

http://www.nysun.com/article/38739

The Knicks had an extraordinarily successful off-season and the best part of it wasn't what they did, but rather what they didn't do.

What they did was notable. The Knicks started their summer with a roar, dumping coach Larry Brown after letting him twist in the wind for a couple of weeks (clearly an Isiah Thomas tradition given his handling of Don Chaney and Lenny Wilkens). The move was necessary as Brown had sabotaged the season, going 23–59 using 42 different starting lineups, failing to set a rotation, and devoting more energy to warring with his players in the newspapers than setting clear roles for them.

The Brown fiasco closed with an interview where the Knicks' chairman, James Dolan, told the team president and head coach, Isiah Thomas, that he had one year to show substantial progress. The ultimatum garnered many headlines but it was dog bites man. Any team executive in charge of an outfit that has posted winning percentages of .476, .402, and .280 in successive seasons would be sitting on a very hot seat.

The draft brought two players, Renaldo Balkman and Mardy Collins, who are primarily known for their defense and hustle. Their free agent shopping resulted in nabbing Jared Jeffries, another defense and hustle type. These are good additions to a club chock full of players who like to score and do little else.

What was remarkable about the Knicks' summer was that those were the only personnel moves made. The Knicks are so far over the cap, $138.5 million according to www.hoopshype.com, that they can be hit with a luxury tax penalty of more than $70 million — in other words, they've reached depths of cap hell that not even Dante imagined. However, their hands aren't tied. Next to young skilled pivot men and point guards, the most sought-after commodity in the NBA is expiring contracts and the Knicks have two, Jalen Rose (due $16.9 million this year) and Maurice Taylor (owed $9.7 million).

Every competitive NBA team (I'm excluding Atlanta from the discussion) is over the cap and one way to get relief is to trade your bad, long-term contracts for expiring deals. Throughout Thomas's tenure, the Knicks have been a repository for mediocre players with bad, long-term contracts. Rose, Taylor, Malik Rose, Anfernee Hardaway, Steve Francis, and Antonio Davis have all donned the blue and orange because the Knicks were willing to take on their bloated contracts. There are signs that this policy has finally changed.

When rumors surfaced that the Knicks were talking to Portland about troubled swingman Darius Miles and with Philadelphia about aging power forward Chris Webber, the centerpiece of the Knicks' offer was swingman Quentin Richardson who is owed $33 million until the summer of 2010. Richardson has a bad back and an uninsured contract, which makes him a very expensive risk. He missed 27 games last season and his play has declined steadily for the last four seasons. Rather than an expiring contract for someone's bad long-term pact, the Knicks were said to be offering one bad deal for another, a subtle but significant change; if I'm reading the Garden tea leaves correctly, the team may finally be seeking some cap flexibility by keeping their expiring contracts and getting the cap relief themselves. They have tried to spend their way out of cap hell, but found themselves spinning their wheels in quicksand.

But what can we expect if the current assemblage is "our New York Knicks" for the near future? For one, substantial improvement can be expected this year. Last season Brown went with a set lineup and rotation for two weeks in late December and early January. The result was six wins in eight games including thrilling overtime wins against Phoenix and Dallas, two of the three best teams in the Western Conference. I don't think the Knicks are a .750 team, but that stretch speaks to the team's actual ability with some basic structure in place. I think the team will improve to 35–40 wins this season and contend for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The improvement will give fans a sense that things are finally moving in the right direction. Also in the summer of 2007, the Knicks' cap situation goes from comically bad to just plain bad as about $50 million worth of salary comes off the books.Rose and Taylor's deal will expire as will those of long gone players like Alan Houston, Shandon Anderson, and Jerome Williams.

From there, the cast pretty much is set for two years. Next summer, the Knicks will have a mid-level exception and Chicago's first round draft pick to bolster this lineup. The Knicks will have one expiring contract next summer, Malik Rose who is owed $7.1 million through summer of '08, but more importantly they will have two guards, Stephon Marbury and Steve Francis, who turn 30 in February and may be nearing the decline phase of their careers. Without reinforcements and unless Jamal Crawford and Nate Robinson can dial it up a notch, then the Knicks' backcourt play may decline a bit in 2007–08 resulting a few fewer victories and greater distance from the playoff chase.

The 2008–09 season will determine the Knicks long term. Marbury and Francis will be in the final years of their deals. If allowed to expire, the Knicks would have a payroll of about $40 million in the summer of '09 and would be able to shop aggressively for free agents to surround a team that would have Crawford, Robinson, Channing Frye, and Eddy Curry in the primes of their career as the cornerstones. They would also have the expiring contracts of Richardson (if he's still around) and Jerome James as bargaining chips. The team would be poised to take the next big step toward contending for a title.

I called a few stores in North Carolina and they too are sold out! They carry the rest of the line. The manager said its selling very strong and they can't keep the shoes in stock.

Maybe a loss leader to attract new customers. I was aware of the stores but its really not my demographic and was also not aware they have 130 stores nationwide!

The publicity this is bring the company is huge, so even if they are not making money on the shoe, they are likely selling other merchendise. How this comensates Marbury I don't know. WIll the company go public at some point with him recieving options based on some performance matrix?

Funny that of all the proplayers that might have been available they choose Marbury.

Put being a fan aside for the moment and think of all the players out there whom might have been available.

Was steve and Barrys first choice Stephon? Did other players shoot it down because of the economic model of not paying upfront?

They are in like 34 states, does Marbury equate in so many states nationwide?

Was the Katrina donation a publicity prerequisite image builder 11 months ago as a way of trying to rebuild Marbury image? Lots of folks make contributions, not many call press conferences and have a near emotional meltdown!

Steph is not a bad guy off the court. I would expect his on court attidude to be better this year for many reasons, even if superficial for his image.

Who cares why as long as he gets the job done.

Winning beats losing. And if sells sneakers, so be it!

The people saying that this $15 shoe is EXACTLY the same as a $90 shoe are Marbury and his PR people.

So guess what. If he's going to make statements like that then anybody can call him on it.

IMHO marbury pushed the product to steve and barry, not vice versa.

Also, marbury is still a top ten selling jersey.

My post was not intended to discredit Marbury or his shoe. I applaud what he is doing and understand that the prime target for the shoes are kids that will not even care about things like arch support. The reason I made the post was: 1) I wanted to know if anyone that actually has the shoes had any opinion on their quality (I plan to buy a pair either way to support Marbury's effort but was just curious); and 2) if Marbury is going to be wearing these shoes all season, I was kind of concerned as to whether the shoe would provide adequate arch support for his feet. One poster mentioned that Marbury will probably have a custom shoe made that would be fitted for his feet, which should resolve any potential problems. I just don't want our star player injurying his feet trying to make a point with these shoes.

I read a qualification like statement that marbury would be wearing the shoe at "home" games.

So, that gave me pause.

We'll see soon enough...oh man, can it be soon enough?

I wouldn't be suprised if they sucked for professionals.

I think the overriding issue is whether or not it is a good value for $15.

I dont see how that can be an issue. What is the value of a shoe? Is there really a value in sneakers that is worth 100 or 150 dollars?

We walk and play sports, do they feel comfortable on your feet? Then theyre good. Unless you have a special job and need special footwear for said job, or have some kind of foot condition, the value of a shoe maxes out pretty quickly. It becomes mostly fashion very early on the value scale.

Especially when every single Nike these days is made in China. The $15 and the $95 shoe are most probably built side by side by the same kid. I need to look it up again to be sure but the actual cost of making a Nike shoe and getting it into the Footlocker display case was lower than $2/pair. Minus the advertising money. But that doesnt make the $95 Nike better than the $15 Starbury.

I tried this sneakers on and the I have to say for 15 dollars you can't complain. The padding on the sole could have been better but for 15 dollars I will still buy it if they only had my size. The day it came out I went to steve and barry's and the line when out the store. The only sizes left were size 13 and up.
