Report: Ewing resigns as Rockets' assistant coachESPN.com news services

After three years working with Jeff Van Gundy on the sidelines in Houston, Patrick Ewing has resigned as assistant coach of the Rockets, KRIV in Houston reported on its Web site.

Ewing is leaving the team to spend more time with his family, the station reported, citing sources close to the team. The sources also said that the organization does not intend to replace Ewing, which would mean an increased role for assistant coach Charlie Ward, a former teammate of Ewing.

Ewing, Van Gundy and Rockets' GM Carroll Dawson were all unavailable for comment.

An 11-time All-Star, Ewing was the face of the Knicks' franchise during the 1990s when New York shared heated rivalries with Chicago, Indiana and Miami. The Knicks reached the NBA Finals twice during Ewing's tenure, in '94 and '99, losing both times.

Among the 7-foot center's other accolades are two Olympic gold medals (1984 and 1992), an NCAA Championship (1984) and being named one of the NBA's 50 greatest players.

------------------------------------

It would be great if the KNICKS could hire Ewing in some compacity (Preferably as assitant coach)!
NY KNICKS 4 EVER! Will we ever find players like Anthony Mason, Xavier McDaniels, Patrick Ewing again? I hope so.

I'd love to have Ewing here, if only to have someone associated with this organization that I actually like.

I understand how Ewing is regarded as being a Knicks player and part of what was very good about the Knicks team but I just don't think he what it takes to be an assitant. He was too stubbern as a player, didn't learn quickly enough, had a hard time bettering the game of others around him. Not to say that he couldn't become a good assitant, but the attributes just weren't there.

If Starks could be doing something with the team, and they don't come any dumber than him, I'm sure a role could be found for Ewing.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

Exactly simrud! Ewing was the embodiment of this franchis for over a decade. He's a legend in Knick land. Stubborn or not, he has a lot of basketball in him. Having been an associate already (and leaving on his own terms)is a great start. If Herb is an associate coach....c'mon.

Patrick Ewing, the Knick was my favorite player of all time in the NBA, no one else close...The day he forced a trade to bring the Knicks to this current state, he lost me...No he didn't take all those bad contracts and players and set the stage for these current Knicks but he was his act of selfishness has this franchise reeling seven years later..Had he been quiet and except his role from the Franchise that make him a wildly rich man beyond his own beliefs, the Knicks would be in a better place today...That wound is still open, I don't want him here anytime soon...Right now, he's like an ex girlfriend that broke your heart..You have a special place in your heart for them but you don't want them anywhere close to you...

Let the man spend time with his family and teach his son to ball...

mark aguire is so overrated ...he hasn't really done much with the talent we've had here (sweetney, curry) in the low post. ewing was working with yao in houston and we all saw how much better yao got this past season... i think ewing would be a good coach for curry and frye, especially when it comes to rebounding, blocking shots, and help defense.

Come on bro, ur a Knick fan if your are here....He forced a trade because he was not happy with his new role with the team...He didn't want to be second fiddle to Camby....And Spree and Houston, the new emerging nucleus of the Knicks for that matter...He asked Dolan to trade him...Dolan respected him tremendously...He had that much clout in the organization...Layden didn't make the trade, Checketts made the trade...It was that big a deal....I remember it like it was yesterday...

We got Glen Rice, Luke Lonely and Travis Knight for Ewing....All bad contracts with players who were hurt and could play anymore...Glen Rice turned into Shandon Anderson and Howard Eisley...Need I say more..

I thought Ewing forced a trade because the Knicks wouldn't give him an extension- which made fiscal sense because he was 37 or so and didn't have that much left (as proven by his years away from the Knicks). Of course they contradicted this by trading him for big money contracts like Rice, Longley etc. Stupidest thing they ever did.

That is the reason. Holfresh is confused.

Lets hope spending more time with his family also includes being an assistant coach for the Knicks. Curry and Frye would benefit greatly! Please come back Pat!!!

Yeah that played a big role as well...Think he wanted a two year extention for crazy money..

GLen rice was just about to decline big time. Once he got his money, he was shot.

Big time players don't translate to big time coaches or even execs.

The hunger is just not there if they are wealthy enough and enjoying the sweet life after years of working hard.

Patrick might not have the ambition after all. As Larry learned, its hard to motivate players and patrick has one of the best work ethics I have ever seen. His warm up routine was very impressive. Watch him for the hour before a game was a treat! Can you coach work ethic? Can you coach being a warrior?

MAYBE he wanted to be a coach but realizes its an obsession that only a few can do.

While we hunger for success, unless he really wants to "COACH" then I don't see him being successful other than having him around for ceromonial purposes.

I'd love to get Patrick back here. He would be a link to when the Knicks actually took pride in being a Knick. He could also work with Curry and Frye big time instead of having Mark auguire as their "big man" coach. What does Auguire know about rebounding, playing above the rim or blocking shots? Why do we invest our whole future nevermind 100 million in Curry, James and Frye but we dont even have a real big mans coach?
By the way this is my first post here. I thank Blue seats for posting this board on real gm. :)
I LOVED how Curry just exploded in the 4th, speaking as a fan of the Raptors, Curry looked well, scary I think is the word. Or Shaq-like Curry: 19.1ppg-7.3rpg-58%fg
