The Washington Wizards will not match the New York Knicks five-year, $30 million offer sheet extended to restricted free agent forward Jared Jeffries last week, a league source told SI.com. Jeffries will become property of the Knicks on Monday.

The 6-foot-11 Jeffries averaged 6.1 points per game in 77 games (all starts) with Washington and was considered one of the top remaining free agents on the market.

Last week Knicks president Isiah Thomas -- who shares the same Indiana alma mater as Jeffries -- signed Jeffries to a frontloaded contract that included a lump payment of $6 million when he signs as well as a trade kicker.

The writing appeared to be on the wall for Jeffries when the Wizards agreed to terms earlier Saturday on a one-year deal (plus a second with a player option) with free agent forward DeShawn Stevenson, a less expensive alternative who averaged 11.2 points and 2.9 rebounds in 82 starts with Orlando last season.

I dont get the feeling that he a bum like jj though, he its true that he played better in his contract year, but he never really got alot of opportunities before then since hes a really a bench player that plays behind jarvis hayes.

Well if Q is healthy he's a far better option at the SF pos then jeff. So the question stands, How good or effective can he be coming of the bench unless his a sixth man. The upside for him is that he can play/guard 3 different positions so that may lead to 30mpg.

No, he has some length, can run an plays D. We had an abundance of undersized guys who can't really play D.

once again the knicks are in the know and 29 clubs aren't. I have to wonder if washington actually gave JJ any offer at anytime. Im not saying JJ cant be a decent piece, but have you ever seen an athletic 6-11 player have trouble making lay-ups? what we just got was jaron collins at the 3 position. hes got the same build as camby but doesnt block 1 shot per game or pull down more than 5 rebounds?????? atleast he is not fat! but as far as making the team better, well thats certainly debateable! as far as the money goes, its absurd, absolutely fiscal insanity to raise payroll 10mm for a guy like this. but it doesnt end does it?:)

30mm$ and over the cap for atleast the first two for Jerome Jmaes and Jared Jefferies.


Not to play devil's advocate:) or Monday-morning QB, but would the money be better spent on Gerald Wallace and Melvyn Ely?

Wallace was never available. Jerome's a dead issue. Jared's a solid player making the NBA average. I'm surprised people have financial worries about one of the very few players on this team paid fairly close to what he's worth. You're not gonna get a multi-position player for twelve cents a year!

Sorry, when I said "JJ's a solid player" I meant Jared Jeffries; that sentence makes it sound like I meant Jerome James. I'll edit it.

It's official for me. I don't ever doubt Zeke's ability to get young talent here, but in other deals-moves' I haven't seen any real improvement here. Example, Jerome James, Stephon Marbury, so far Curry and the jury is still out on that one, we'll see (but I have a feeling). It's not so much these moves that dissapoint, but the lengthy contracts that knot us all up, sometimes for years, that got me going. Well' it's now official. This five year move is Zeke's last chance for me. If this guy Jeffries turns out to be a bust and we're stuck with him? I will soon be joining the 'Fire Zeke' crowd. This is IT's last chance with me. I agree with your 'fiscal insanity' remark.
I'll never trust this' team again.
