Ok so I'm going in for my 3rd dunk in 10 minutes, and...LOL!!! Thats the story I'll be telling the chicks!

The real story is: I'm driving to the lane, as i plant my leg, someguy bangs my knee with some part of his body, and i crash to the floor.

Guys are like: get up and walk it off.
My pain is so intense I can't even respond to them.
Finally I look down at my knee and notice that where a kneecap normally is, there is a huge indent. I touch it a realize my knee cap has either relocated, or has been shattered. I know that either one can't be good. And I also know, there will be no 'walking it off'. Guys are like are you alright, and I am banging on the floor wishing they would shut up.

Guys are like, let me help you up (I am on the fouline in an indoor gym) and I still can't say much. Finally I yell out, call an ambulance!!No one moves. I yell out again, call an ambulance!!! Call an ambulance!!! They now seem to be getting the picture, this is not a sprained ankle.
Even as some relize that they still want me to be moved to the sideline so they could continue to play. I made it clear that I was not moving one mother****ing inch, until medical proffessionals arrived. I'm sorry to hold up your game guys, but my knee is kind of like, missing or something. And argument ensues between a younger guy who wanted to move me and older guy who said that everyone should wait until the ambulance comes.

Then one gentleman, who is a city councilman, comes in and says guys should move me to the side (he had next and wanted to play). Again, I made it clear I was not moving until an amblulance came. His response was that the street was blocked off due to a book fair and that an ambulance wouldn't be able to get there. I responded that an ambulance doesn't have to pull up to the door, we just need them to geta gurney in here so I can be moved safely; the only way I will consent to be moved. He walked away.

Amidst all of this comotion of what most (including me) assumed would be a long wait, the EMS guys got there in about 10 minutes. I was wheeled to the hospital, where I was diagnosed as having a rupture of the patella tendon. That eans the thing that holds my kneecap in place, broke, and thats why my knee was smore on my lower thigh than on my knee. I will need surgery. I'll keep you guys posted.

This is more or less what my Knee was looking like.

Damn, Killa. Sorry man. I wish you a speedy recovery.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

DAAAAAAAAMN! I dread just that kind of thing happening to me and I REALLY feel for you man. There's always that danger lurking everytime we step on the court. At this point just take your time healing and rehabbing your leg man, cuz that's a tough one.

That'll teach you to take the ball into Jeff Gillooly's paint. You gotta work on that J man, adds years to your game.

Just kidding. I sympathize... I've had some bad ankle sprains (one put me on crutches literally for months) and a gruesome dislocation or two but nothing like that. Can't imagine what it's like, but I know it's gotta be pretty bad. It's another hardwood badge. Hope you can get back on the court some day.

Killa,

I'm sorry to hear about your knee. I've had 5 knee surgeries so I sympathize with you. They are no picnic. Take care of yourself, take it slow, and when you are ready to play again, be in good shape!

Take it easy,

oohah

Good luck Mike D'Antoni, 'cause you ain't never seen nothing like this before!

Geez!

As you know I tore my acl last year in march. I'm still not right. I haven't really been running st all and I still can't squat or press what I need to in order to prove to myself I'm ready to play again.

I had an acl graphed from my patella tendon. My worst fear is for my patella to rupture!

For the love of basketball? Damn man its gonna be rough. Just get ready for your time home after surgery. I know I was in mega pain for about 2 weeks. Using the bathroom and washing your ass will be an adventure. Keep your walking areas clear and keep all your favorite things near your resting place!

I dunno if the pain you have will be as bad as mine cuz the surgery is different. Still man prepare now for your first few weeks home after surgery.

Good luck!

That'll teach you to take the ball into Jeff Gillooly's paint. You gotta work on that J man, adds years to your game.

My sweet jumper is what made this happen. I have played ball once in the last 6 months or more. I used to have a pretty Allan Houstesque Jumper. So I'm in the Weight room working out heavy, and then I slide into the gym to shoot some ft's. Front rim, air ball, off to the left, I think I made like 1 out of 12. My arms were too weak from lifting, I can't even think about shooting a 3. So I go back and workout some more, on my back and abs with my boy. As I'm leaving we walk through the gym and the ball rolls over to me by the 3 point line in the corner. I pull up....swish. I move 2 feet to my left and get the ball again...swish. repeat until I am all the way on the other side of the rim, all behind the 3 pt. line and they all went in; about 10 consecutive shots. Now I'm feeling good. Guys want to run a full and ask if we'll play. I figure: Why not? I need to do some more cardio, my jumper is looking serious, sure lets do it.

I get in the game and everything is moving too fast for me. I'm bobbling the ball, I can't get where I want on the court. I get the ball just inside the 3 pt line and force a shot...brick (i didn't square up and remember to keep my elbow in). I get the ball under the basket, spin around to lay it up....miss, their ball. I shoot another jumper, square up elbows in...in & out. cool, Im feeling better. blow about 3 more baskets right under the basket (2 off of a rebound from 1 a dump down). Now I'm feeling down, I can't believe I am sucking so bad, and we are losing BIG!

Then the guy I'm guarding lies about a play to keep the ball. We all argue, but they keep the ball. Now I'm mad. I box out fight for a rebound and put it in. I get another rebound, bang into the defender and hit a fadeaway off the glass. Next I get the ball on the right elbow, I want to pull up, but the guy jumps out at me, so I drive left into the lane. I drive in and as I get to the edge of the foul line BANG!!! Its all over, I'm on the floor wishing I could magically transport myself anywhere but on the floor of the gym writhing in pain, banging on the hardwood. We were down 7 -1 (primarily my fault, I blew like 5 baskests). After we all got hype, the game was 10-8 and I was a big part of that, scoring, defending and rebounding. I just was out of shape and not adjusted to the game mainly. When you are shooting jumpers by yourself, its alot different than on the court with everyone moving fast and me not realizing that I am moving so much slower than I ever have. Everyone saw me shooting in there so they weren't gonna play off of me.

Why didn't we just walk out of there and say no thanks?? Such is life.

BTW, thanks everyone for their well wishes!!

sorry to hear about your knee. Now you know why Antonio McDyess came back jumping about as half as high as he did before. I too am thinking about saying goodbye to the hardwood... its not the old mans game. Anyhow, well wishes and speedy recovery.. look forward to Cycling, Curling, or competitive aerobics as maybe your new competitive hobbies..

Man, walking out of the damn hospital was an adventure. I want a damn wheelchair!!!

Especially because my knee brace has my leg straight. So with crutches its hard because I have to compensate for the fact that my other leg can touch the ground if I don't lift it or move it to the side. I have a chair to roll around the house in, and even that is difficult. I didn't have much pain after the initial incident. I wasnt dealing with any pain really until the doc started asking me to bend my knee and was pressing his fingers so deep in my knee. I was like DOc!! Doc!! DOC!!!!!!! and he was acting like I wasn't saying anything!!!! He didn't stop!! When I came in my blood pressure was 125/88. The lady checked my BP right after he did that and my top number was 158 or something. That **** was excruciating!! But we were all laughing so hard about it and joking alot so that was cool.

Killa,

  • Get a shower stool. Showering can be very dangerous.

  • If you don't have metal crutches get some, they are lighter and I found them easier to use.

  • Get canned drinks and food you can put in a knapsack from the fridge to the bed, crutches make it impossible to carry anything.

I'll see if I can think of anymore stuff that might help, but that is what immediately comes to mind.

and get someone to spot you while you practice going downstairs. that's scary as hell to be at the top of a sizable staircase until you get the hang of it.

Dude!! I'm really sorry!! But what an engaging report! You sound like you're still in the giddy hyper stage about this. I recommend milking that one as long as you can before the killa4painrelievers stage kicks in!

it's just temporary--mcdyess is back with the same thing:>) think about this< i cant use my right arm and my left hand started developing arthritis bad enough that kept me from posting for about 3 weeks going back a few months ago. there was a couple of days i was tempted to use my nose:>) a little more meds and my left hand is OK--- you will be 100% and back on the court in no time. rehab strong and you will be fine.

It's terrible that you were injured. Don't regret stepping on to the court though. You can never tell what else may have happened if you didn't. It's not fair to yourself to say, "what if I didn't play" because the realm of "what if" is infinitely greater than the subset of what actually happened. If you hadn't stopped to play, you could have been involved in a tragic and bizarre death by paper cuts while walking through the book fair... well, probably not that, but the point is...no regrets. Feel better, brother.

At first I wanted to tell you how much I feel sorry for you. I wish you the best for the next months, you'll have to bee strong to climb the hill again but you'll eventually do it if you fight for it.

And this :

Why didn't we just walk out of there and say no thanks?? Such is life.

Is the real cause of most of bad injuries I suffered or saw guys suffer. Sometimes, you have to be patient and listen to your body. I personally destroyed my right ankle (bye bye dunks) playing a day after a party in which I drank too much, had to little sleep...

In that kind of situation, I'd strongly advise everyone to remember this and just say : "no thanks".

Thinking about time lost when you train yourself and you think, "man, i should be in the gym today again" will sometimes bring you back to square one cause of an injury. You have to be patient and let your body heal. Healing is as much important as training sometimes, and other times even more.

But for you man is the time to move on. Take that as a lesson to learn that make you much wiser and will make you live much longer. Don't wonder about "what if" and such, cause the thing is here and nothing can be done to change that. now you'll have to focus on the future and on stepping on the court again to use that sweet jumper.

Take care, we'll be all here to support you.

Antoine
